I've been on mostly electronic music and rap for the last few months, and just downloading a brand new tech death metal album is just soooo amazing for me. Like shit, dubstep is mainly done the concerts are still awesome but that Battlefield commercial and that other shitty movie trailer Red Hawks they blast dubstep to make the commercial look cooler. Rap is alright but fuck, I couldn't listen to it forever and I only like Lil wayne and eminem  I've tried other rap and hip hop, it doesn't do much for me. I need guitar and instruments sometimes, and IDK my main thought really but I just am so happy I was finally able to understand metal music. Also posting because I know there is lots of metalheads on here. Another thought, I think its funny when people say music is so shitty nowadays, when there is stuff constantly coming out and there are so many subgenres of metal its amazing.. And people just either donn't know shit or they can't get through the vocals. i fuckin love metal, its my favorite music by far I dont think anything touches it

I really enjoy prog metal like Dream Theater. A lot of it is too fast or unmelodic for me to enjoy.

I like the songs of opeth that aren't as brutal. Insane amount of talent.

Cheers man  I love all forms of metal but my favorite is the dark, fantasy tinged epics of the early black metal scene... specifically Emperor.
This shit makes me feel like I am going on some epic adventure. If it sparks your interest at all I have quite a few other recommendations.
Not trying to belittle your original point though. Spawn of Possession is fucking awesome too... just a very different style.

I'll take Nightside and Anthems any day because of the otherworldly atmosphere they manged to create. But yes nearly everything Ihsahn has done is brilliant and the later work is much more accessible. His solo stuff is definitely worth checking out (although I am not a fan of Peccatum or some of his other spin off experimental projects)

When I was younger and first started listening to metal I got into the whole death/black/extreme underground brutal sort of metal stuff. In retrospect I was mainly attracted to the shock value of it (especially Norwegian black metal). Nowadays I don't experience much shock value for anything, so that appeal has turned off. Now it just sounds like a bunch of noise to me. I know some people will get their panties in a bunch over me saying this, but yes, that is how it sounds to me.
Now I'm still an avid of metal, but I'm more into metalcore type stuff like As I Lay Dying, All That Remains, Shadows Fall, etc. for my hard jams, and symphonic prog stuff like Dream Theater and Opeth as some listed above for my artistic taste in music.
There is good music nowadays, but you have to look for it. It's not mainstream.
