Golden Oyster question
#16135219 - 04/24/12 10:32 PM (1 year, 27 days ago) |

I started some Golden Oysters from a spore syringe to PF cakes. No contams so far, but they have been growing for close to or a little over two months now and they hae still not fully colonized the jars. The myc is really pretty and white and all, just sooo slow. Is this just the strain or (*guess*) maybe my jars dont have enough moisture?
If I did screw them up, is there a way to save them or should i start over?
Thanks for any advice as this is my first grow.
Peace

Depending on how many jars you have you can cut out the uncolonized places and go from there. But I can bet that someone has a better suggestion. . .

Are you going to transfer them to any other growth medium?

I had planned on putting them in a shotgun aq with perlite in the bottom. so you think if i cut the bottoms of non-myc off my jars and maybe stack them they will fruit? the jars are a little more than half way done, but its like i said, been 2 months to get that far and they dont appear to be growing anymore.
the spores were expencive so i would like to at least get a print outa them so i can try agian.

heh, my first idea was to sterlize a syringe full of water and shoot some into the jars. lol but i was too chicken to try it, before asking here in the forums if the reason they stopped growing was moisture related or not.

Hmmmmmmmm. Well. If you have the capabilities you can pasturize some straw and transfer your colonized parts to the straw..... Perhaps. I am wondering if your problem might be a contamination of some sort. Lets see a picture or two.

yellow oyster myc is usually about as tenacious as it gets. It should fully colonize that jar in no time. If it stalled at that stage I would guess it is contaminated with bacteria. You can find out easy enough by just shaking the shit out of the jar. If it is contaminated with bacteria the myc will not recover because shaking does not disturb the bacteria and they will quickly over run the substrate. Otherwise, it looks a bit wet but oyster is pretty forgiving. Other helpful info?? incubation temp? gas exchange? if pf tek how many holes? and no micropore tape hopefully.

Nah. You dont need the coir or verm for the oysters. All you need is some straw. You could use wood. I guess the oyster could eat the coir but I think it does not have much nutrient value. You could try it if you want. That is if you don't want to get straw. But eh whateva.
Do your jars smell like anything?

no bad smell, smells like mushroom when i take a wiff. no sweet or sour smells. i incubated them inbetween 75 - 85 farienheight. the temp moves around a bit but is usually always between those two temps. The problem i have with straw is i live in the city and i have yet to find a place to buy it. where do you get yours?

always best to incubate at room temp. above 75 degrees and you are selecting for bacteria and against mycelium 85 is def pushing it. Dunno how many jars you have but i would shake one up and see if it recovers. I have had jars stall then grow again, but when they stall I always suspect bact comtam.

just a quick update: I just birth'd the cakes and they were dry as a powder keg. i think there was zero moisture in them.
The myc was still pure white so does that mean its still alive? the whole ordeal made my kitchen smell like mushrooms, Yummy! and now i am hungry agian LOL.
I ended up with 3/4 cakes or 5/8 on some. I put them in water to soak before trying the FC. Am I wasting my time with these?

not necessarily. might as well give it a try, just run them in the sink and wash away ALL of the uncolonized substrate, then dunk them for 12 hrs in COLD water, fridge is good; roll in verm and put in fc. I suspect they will be pinning in no time. The trick is gonna be to get that uncolonized substrate off. It will contam.
