Mammillaria something is my guess.
Definitely a Loph. First glance I would say a diffusa, but could easily be any of them. Not the best at loph sps. I say that because of how green it is and the shape, but that could be (and probably is) caused by conditions. water/fertilizer.

Without flowers, I always have a tough time with them. Doesn't look like it you will have to wait all that long. nice find either way

The colour of the loph is the same as my small williamsi, which I got from a reputable grower. when they are small and full of water they seem to be that nice green colour. Mine was a cutting that has been sitting in soil for over a month now. its starting to get darker but hasnt started to shrivel yet. hope it gets some roots soon.

Use a clay pot. something around the size it is in now, or up to twice that size. clay pots around here are sold in short or standard depth, go for the standard depth one if possible.

What is the mix like it is currently in? Looks quite at home in that pot size. Overpotting cacti isn't usually recommended, especially so for tap-rooted species. The only repot I would say that fellow needs, if at all, is a deeper one!

i'm not sure how to describe it... it's loose/plenty of perlite, not packed down or too dense, slightly moist but not wet
it looks pretty healthy... surely it's plump appearance has to be a good sign, right?
i'll grab a clay pot maybe twice as deep
i was planning to just cut apart the plastic container it's in, or just pull it all out and then put in the new pot, filling in the sides with some additional soil mix - cactus soil / sand / perlite combo... sound good?
thanks guys
