You mean when you talk about your beliefs or questions about belief?

i'm going to have to beg to differ with the opinions in this thread. philosophy for me seems to be the practice of directly engaging the world through language. surely there are iconic philosophers who are known for their hermetic lifestyles like kant and nietzche, but even then their writings seem to greatly outweigh their lack of physical presence in society in that people are still talking about them. beyond that, philosophy deals with the search for truth, and if everyone was able to find truth i don't see how that could be anything but unifying. that's not to say that everyone should subscribe to the same type of thinking in some dogmatic way, but society itself is a product of our reason, and the more capacity we have to utilize our rationality, the better made our society can be.

I see the reason for this not as a denial of death, but that the need for self esteem
read beckers work and you'll come to realize that they are much the same thing.
Becker, for me was like putting the final nail in a project I had been working on for a long time thinking I would never find where that last nail could possibly go.
for me, beckers work is like the glue that holds my understanding of human motivation together. before reading becker i felt lost in a sea of facts. people do this, people do that. but now i feel that becker has provided me with a theoretical framework with which i can organize my observations of human nature. it really is a wonderful thing. what makes it really brilliant though is that it is not only useful for academics to deconstruct events or ideas, it is just as useful to the average individual for understanding their own motivations and the motivations of others in day to day life.

Maybe sometimes it needs a little rhetoric to gain a Pulitzer price for simple and obvious facts like 'avoiding harmful situations' and their consequences and motivations. For me it's not the driving force behind life. It's the secondary consequence - maybe the other side of the medal for it.

Shmecker Decker, it's too obvious for me to read... But it's good if it helps people...I think he also relays to the primary factor as he says it's better to overcome these fears...
