It was the second fastest of the bunch. It was supposed to be done consolidating the 19th. All of my other Cambodians will be done consolidating the 21st but I dont know if I can wait that long they have just as many pins only smaller.
Lol The waiting is the hardest part for first time grow I sympathize. Consolidating will improve your yield in the end though. It'll also will take them less time to produce more pins. I birthed one cake early and it took a while for it to show more pins.

I find that once I have some babies in fruiting it's easier to distract myself from the one colonizing

Yes indeed. Although some of the pins in my other jars are starting to bruise from being pushed up against the jar. Should I just not worry about it?

You'll see bruising through out fruiting. It's fine. Even the cakes might turn slightly blue during the whole process.

I birthed one about a month ago that I didn't consolidate and it's just starting to pin
I came across that problem, it was about 2 weeks +/- and it still wasn't pinning so I took the cake and dunked it again for 12 hours. Mycelium looked a lot healthier and it started pinning 2-3 days later.

What causes small fruit? The veils are starting to break and they are like a couple inches?

Some one more experienced can back up or refute what I say. On any of your flushes you'll find some itty bitties. I harvested a flush on one cake where i had a couple decent sized ones but the rest were tiny but the caps were opening up and they weren't growing any more. Some are aborts and others just simply are small. They are actually more potent though. Granted the bigger ones contain more of the chemical because of its mass, but just saying ,density wise, the little ones have more in them.
As for what causes small fruits...I believe it's simply genetics man. Keep in mind too you'll have more then one flush so you might get much bigger ones on your next flush. If there was a specific factor that controlled how big the mushrooms got we would see posts all the time of big fat monsters.
What you should do though is take the biggest cap from your flushes and make a spore print from it and make a syringe. That'll increase your likely hood of bigger fruits.

Ok man my biggest cap right now is about nickel shaped. I have only had those 2 in there for 2 days so I am going to wait and see if they get bigger.

Has the veil broken on any of them? And yeah wait just a bit longer. I had one invitro pin grow for 3-4 days. It was a skinny little guy then bulked up. The ones with the thicker stalks are going to be your bigger ones.

2 veils have broken and the thick stalk ones are not like that anymore they have gotten about a 1/2 to 3/4 longer and less fat at the base.

Ok. Lately I been hearing the best time to pick is when the veils break. I been kind of experimenting with picking times but in general once you see that cap flattening you need to pick it, though I am sure a lot of people will jump on that statement saying sooner then that.
The gnomes hat is what you're looking for. That is its pinnacle of potency. Since its your first grow as well I say experiment with it and have fun! This is the part you been waiting for after all! :P. See it as a hands on lesson in the fruiting patterns and the stages of the mushroom fruits. That way you'll have lots of experience and know for sure when to pick with your other flushes/grows........or you can just pick em and eat em

I dont think I will ever print my first flush because the bigger fruits come from the second flush. That is unless I get a giant on the first flush. I am less worried about potency for size I will have a nice trip either way.
