I've been unemployed off and on for a few months now, and nothing permanent seems to be happening anywhere with employment. So I've recently started trying to think of alternative ways of making money. One of my ideas was an under-the-table job, but it seems that in a lot of cases, the only way to get these types of jobs is to already know someone.
That said, does anyone have any suggestions for finding one? Any particular skills or services that might be marketable to someone?

ime, it's better to get a paper job and pay the taxes...depending on your filing status. the last few years of my work were jobs that automatically took out taxes. i ended up getting everything back each time, state and federal, and the paperwork was practically already done for me
though if you don't intend on filing your taxes anyways, might as well get every penny, i guess
Oh, getting back my returns isn't my worry. I've filed every year and always got some back. I probably should have elaborated more. I am not giving up on a "paper job" but times are tough and I'm more or less looking for something else to supplement my lack of income while I am unable to find work elsewhere. And if the government isn't taking their fifth of it out of every paycheck, even better.

Pretty much any service job can be under-the-table if you want it to be.
Any time I pay for a tradesman (carpenter, plumber, electrician, etc.), I write the guy a check. Its up to him/her to declare it as income on their taxes.

Yup. If you have an area nearby that hosts local events such as flea markets, fairs, sports, anything that uses third party concessionaires (particularly food concessions), those third party mobile business operators are generally more likely to pay cash without reporting, than the established brick and mortar businesses. I worked at a mobile food trailer that had a contract at a local stadium for all of their events, and that also hit various one off events such as the local fairs and races at other venues. They always paid me cash and let me eat (or give away to friends/family) as much free food as I wanted. Man that job was sweet, even though it was the hardest job I've ever worked dollar for dollar, since I had to do all the setup and teardown of the stand itself, tons of cleaning, and the crowds during big events were just nutty. But that's the cool thing about being young, physically taxing jobs can actually make you feel really good... then you get older and those jobs start to hurt!

That's actually a really good idea. We have a recreational park not far from my home that does things like that sometimes, so I might try going up there soon. Free food is never bad either. And I feel ya on the physical jobs. I don't want a super demanding job, but I've had the chance recently to work in an office environment and sitting on your ass for 8 hours a day fucking SUCKS. Being able to move around is key.

I had one under the table job doing roofing. First and Best job I ever had. 10 an hour for 10 hour days 6 days a week. I only got in becuase i knew the second shingler to the foreman, but the contractor would hire other grunts all the time. Anyone willing to work their ass off would get in the back of the van to the job site. You should look into that, as well as, scraping. I'm gonna try to do some scraping this summer for extra income, mostly just copper as i have nowhere to put the metal yet or even a car to move it

Stand outside home depot, or...go to a construction site, or a place where you see people working on a building. Ask if they need any extra hands.
OR...work at state fairs. The latter won't always pay well, though, depending on where you work at, but sometimes it's a great way to earn extra cash. I traveled with the carnival off and on for 3 years, and wouldn't recommend traveling with them, but ask if they need spot help, or better yet, ask if they have a "hole."(it's carnie lingo and they think you're hip to the game, and will find you a job immediately, if they have one) Just be aware that food booths and rides pay salary, games pay commission.
OR better yet, go up to the independents(as in, non-carnival) food concessions at state fairs and ask they need any extra hands. It's always better to ask while they are still setting up/not open yet. If you ask around the entire fair grounds, I am sure SOMEONE in some department, will find you work. If you look scroungy tho, independents will shy away from you, but the carnival will take you because they might believe you're a carnie.
Just two ideas. You can also go into business for yourself, but then you have to spend the time getting to know people, advertising, etc. I've thought about doing this, because after quitting the carnival, I have had trouble finding a decent job.(i worked at subway for 3 months, but got fired. Won't go into details)
I'm thinking of walking dogs, shoveling snow, etc. I thought about standing outside holding a sign reading, "will clean car. Exterior $5, interior $10."
I figure if I ask for that little, I'm bound to attract customers who need their car cleaned out. and if I get enough people, I'll make some good cash. The key is to spend however long it takes, and don't charge extra if it takes longer then usual. If they insist on paying extra, be modest, but don't turn it down if they're persistent. It shows you are desperate, and pity is a good thing in this instance.
If you're friendly enough with them, they'll have you do more shit for them, or they'll try to find you a job, or clue you in on openings in town. It's all about who you know really. If everyone knows you and likes you, eventually you'll befriend someone who will help you find a job I'm guessing.
I also take online surveys, if you wanna look into that. They pay very little, however. Average is something like, 31 cents an hour.(not every hour, just...that's my estimate. It took me a week to get almost halfway to ten dollars)

It allows for a very unique lifestyle that might fit you. Ever read "Kitchen Confidential" by Anthony Bourdain.?. Corporate jobs have many rules, but good money. Private restaurants is the place for me though.
Stay away from fast food and diners, shoot for country clubs, resorts, hotels, and fine dining restaurants with a bar, because there's a chance to make big money if they have a tip pool. Banquets and catering facilities always need help too, even if it's just for a day or two.
I can offer assistance with a recommendation if you'd like.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. Not sure if I'd have much luck sitting at a construction site being female, but the carnival and restaurant ideas are worth checking out.
I've noticed some interesting things about private upscale restaurants though. I see ads for them frequently on Craigslist and a growing number of them are experience only, but what gets me the most is the fact that they want their applicants to send headshots. Maybe I'm just in a smaller city or something but damn, I never realized the restaurant industry was so...for lack of a better word, snooty?

in vegas some resturaunts hire their servers as models, therefore can fire them for being overweight or get around the exception of equal opportunity employment. huge loophole they take advantage of.
I don't know if you're a scrappy or tough person and sometimes they expect you to double as a bouncer, but driving "dancers" and "escorts" to outcalls is decent money and usually cash under the table, or some aboveboard to look legit and then they'll give you more cash.
You usually have to have some semi decent clothes and a semi-decent car, though.

honestly though, sellin' weed is petty change unless you know the source or have a great hookup. Even then, to make the amount of money I can at a real job I would be paranoid AND annoyed as fuck dealing with a million different clients. lol
