brf incubation: substrate too dry?
    #16103755 - 04/17/12 10:13 PM (2 years, 4 months ago)

It's been 6 1/2 days since inoculation, and I've seen no signs of growth as of now.
I've read this is around the time growth is supposed to show, but since I'm going on a week long vacation on Thursday, I'm wondering if there's any recommendations to follow, or if I should just let it do it's thing while I'm gone. Compared to the pictures I've seen floating around using this tek, my substrate seems on the dry, but I'm new, so there's that. :P
For clarification, I'm using 5 half-pint jars, B+ strain, and I followed this guide. Also, the jars are sitting in a roughly 68 degree room with indirect sunlight, and the lids are tight. Pics included!
This is right before or after inoculation.

As of today.

Any advice/criticisms, please?

FWIW, I had a tall 1/2 pint like yours that took over 2 weeks to show growth. I have grain jars that show in 4 days, and others not for 9. 6 days is too soon to be nervous, I've learned.

low temps and not enough air can slow growth
take temp to up
and remove the tape if its covering the holes
the dry verm on top will filter bacteria

I just ran out and bought a thermometer. I'm not sure why I didn't get one when I bought a hygrometer -_- I do think my estimate was a bit low;  I've been using my house thermostat downstairs as a relative temp, but I know it doesn't take into account that they're incubating upstairs, where it's generally warmer, and in a location that catches sunlight until 3~ pm. I'll check the temp tomorrow and adapt accordingly.
I'll remove the tape as well. Come to think of it, I think I ended up double layering my tape after I inoculated 'cause I wasn't sure if the tape (nexcare gentle paper tape ) was really the micropore tape needed. I'll change that too. Thanks for the help!

Thats the right tape. And though people will tell you to take it off, I say it can't hurt. I'm just coming to the end of a test where I did some jars with just a verm barrier, and no tape, and did some jars which had both tape and verm. Doubled the tape up. All jars (12) are colonizing equally, with your normal allowed variances.  FWIW

Dude you can buy micro pore tape ( gentle paper tape ) at  a pharmacy or a grocery store. Just DONT buy it at a dollar store. That nexcare stuff is what i use.
