15 arrests in international online drug probe
A sophisticated online drug marketplace that sold everything from marijuana to mescaline to some 3,000 people around the world has been cracked with the arrests of 15 people in several countries, U.S. authorities announced Monday.
By ROBERT JABLON
LOS ANGELES —
A sophisticated online drug marketplace that sold everything from marijuana to mescaline to some 3,000 people around the world has been cracked with the arrests of 15 people in several countries, U.S. authorities announced Monday.
An indictment unsealed in federal court in Los Angeles claims eight men ran "The Farmer's Market," which allowed suppliers of drugs - including LSD, Ecstasy and ketamine - to anonymously sell their wares online. They hooked up with buyers in 34 countries and accepted various forms of payment, including cash, Western Union and PayPal transactions, the indictment claims.
From 2007 to 2009 alone, the marketplace processed more than 5,000 orders for drugs valued at more than $1 million, federal officials contended. It began operations as far back as March 2006, authorities said.
The market "provided a controlled substances storefront, order forms, online forums, customer service, and payment methods for the different sources of supply" and charged the suppliers a commission based upon the value of the order, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles.
"For customers, the operators screened all sources of supply and guaranteed delivery of the illegal drugs," the statement said.
The alleged ringleader, Dutch citizen Marc Willems, 42, was arrested Monday at his home in Lelystad in the Netherlands, officials said.
Michael Evron, 42, a United States citizen living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was taken into custody on Sunday in Bogota, Colombia, authorities said.
The other six men were arrested at their homes. They are identified as Jonathan Colbeck, 51, of Urbana, Iowa; Brian Colbeck, 47, of Coldwater, Mich.; Ryan Rawls, 31, of Alpharetta, Ga.; Jonathan Dugan, 27, of North Babylon, N.Y.; George Matzek, 20, of Secaucus, N.J.; and Charles Bigras, 37, of Melbourne, Fla.
It was not immediately clear whether the men had obtained lawyers.
The 12-count indictment charges all eight men with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and money laundering conspiracy. Some of the men also are charged with distributing LSD and taking part in a continuing criminal enterprise.
All could face a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted of conspiracy.
In addition, seven other people were arrested on suspicion of drug crimes Monday in the Netherlands, Georgia, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, and authorities seized hallucinogenic mushrooms, hashish, LSD, marijuana and Ecstasy, the U.S. attorney's office said.
The investigation led to those arrests, but authorities still were trying to determine their connections to the online marketplace, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin S. Rosenberg.
The two-year investigation, dubbed "Operation Adam Bomb, "involved law enforcement agents from several U.S. states and several countries, including Colombia, the Netherlands and Scotland, the U.S. attorney's office said.
The case was filed in Los Angeles because some of the customers and an undercover agent who bought drugs through the marketplace are from the area, Rosenberg said.
"Illegal narcotics trafficking now reaches every corner of our world, including our home computers," U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said in the statement. "But the reach of the law is just as long. ... We want to make the Internet a safe and secure marketplace by rooting out and prosecuting those persons who seek to illegally pervert and exploit that market."
The marketplace "was distributing dangerous and addictive drugs to every corner of the world, and trying to hide their activities through the use of advanced anonymizing online technology," said Briane M. Grey, acting special agent in charge of the Los Angeles Field Division for the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The marketplace allegedly used the Tor network, which spreads website and email communications through a volunteer network of servers around the world in order to mask Internet address information.
Tor originally was developed at a project of the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory to protect government communications. The free software and open network is used to prevent websites from tracking users, getting access to websites blocked by Internet providers, and providing anonymity for online users and online publishers. It is used by "normal people, the military, journalists, law enforcement officers, activists, and many others," according to the Tor Project website.

does anyone know the name of this company? well there are a few sites that are like this. with some you have to download some sort of incognito program so your ip or whatever is scrammed. also the site i recently read about generated encrypted http: addresses, ie 30492340283402938409 haha
pretty brilliant stuff, its just too bad the same type of technology that is working for these people is also working against them too.

I don't think they traced them all through the TOR network, but rather through the payment systems. I wouldn't worry if you just browsed through some shady sites on there.

They already are, but there is like no proof that people are doing specific deals. Information isn't illegal, just selling it. The only way this site could help somebody get busted is if they are already being watched

When I first saw this I thought it was SR, too. Never heard of this one. I'm sure tons more will take it's place. In the future, maybe virtually all drug sales will take place on networks like tor. Only probably not tor because there are far more secure networks than tor.
This kind of site is just the beginning.

Be careful on the sr. Local dude at a college just got raided last week. Word is his sr activity was somehow monitored for a while. Anyways they got him with operating a drug lab (precursors), among other possession charges. From what I understand warrants were issued for hard drives and such. Not sure if this happens often with sr users, but it's worth pointing out that if it hasn't been compromised yet, it's know that LEOs have gotten at least this close.

Wow, interesting article, sad to see they busted the mushroom grow in addition to the LSD, etc.
The world of high-tech anonymity must be really bizarre, I wonder what took them 2 years of investigation? Was that to break the anonymity and find out who all those people were? Also if Tor is a government created program - and I've seen people saying to use it around here for years...kinda makes you wonder.
I was always too scared to do online drug deals, always seemed WAY too dangerous, I mean it is sketchy enough when you're in the real world and can look the people square in the eye...

First off, "the Internet" is not a marketplace.
Secondly, they did not pervert or exploit anyones marketplace, they created their own marketplace.
Thirdly, I don't think the "reach of the law" is that long, law enforcement just got lucky.
Fourthly, What is even more perverse than someone going outside the law and selling drugs are the ones who blindly follow their puppet masters and their prehistoric drug laws.

It's probably an "age" thing to some extent, I can see buying RC's or something not scheduled, but LSD, cannabis, all that, seems like too many variables for me. I mean, even when I was on tour I had people telling me they'd mail me herb or molly here or there, and I was just never comfortable enough to receive a package like that no matter what the precautions were.
LSD on the other hand, now that always felt very safe, since it was just paper in an envelope, no worries on that, but that was always people I had known for a long time, so, I think the "stranger" thing and also the variables, made it just something I was never able to allow for myself. I'm not saying it is safe or unsafe, but that it FELT unsafe to me...

I would buy drugs in an alley or off the corner.

I guess it just depends on who you are and who you know. For some people buying face to face will always be easier. But there's a lot of people who aren't in those circles and it is hard to find people locally sometimes, especially when you're not a regular rave/festival/show attendee. I have limited experience with online ordering, but I can say that everything I have ordered online has trumped anything I ever received in person in terms of quality. There is always a chance of being caught, but isn't there a chance of being caught in person as well? I just try to use my best judgment when considering ordering from these places and I spend a long time researching and reading other people's commentary, trying to get a good feel before I just dive in.

Dumb cops catching even dumber drug dealers. I don't know what's more stupid: Offering trackable payment methods or needing two fucking years to find those people.

I'm freakin old school...i won't even try to order xanax or vallies. Amazing to me the ppl that seem to risk it like this. Penalties just add up...like using the postal system and money transactions....makes a possible misdemeanor an instant felony. I feel the internet revolution has actually made a generation of ppl stupid in knowing how to keep your ass out of trouble.....

This is absolutely infuriating!
So, let me get this strait: They're going to give a group of guys LIFE IN PRISON for providing clean, well researched psychedelics to the world, allowing the buyer to bypass potentially dangerous situations and laced products.
Fucking christ, these people were making the world a slightly better place.

I wouldn't say that. Buying online can be a lot safer than buying on the streets - but you need to know what you're doing, use your brains and have the money. However, IMHO nothing can beat the well-trusted supplier in one's neighborhood.

OMFG, that indictment is even more hilarious! You really need to take a look at it.

They didn't even encrypt their e-mails.
Considering the evidence and their gross dilettantism, they probably won't see the light of day again until the end of prohibition.

Of course this will stop all their customers from using drugs ever again.
Really, this just means that they may be forced back into a shady market instead of dealing with things risk free from their home. It's a tragedy.

I don't see anything hilarious about it. There are a few typos (common in any document of 66 pages) but for the most part it is pretty well organized. The most terrifying part is the mass of the controlled substances it has been alleged the defendants sold, and the resultant penalties cited at the end of the document. More than 3 times the mass necessary (10 grams in the case of LSD, for example) to result in life imprisonment.
Also, did you read the property forfeiture penalties??? Nothing to laugh about there either, dude. YOU certainly would not be laughing if you were incarcerated and your attorney was explaining the massive charges and penalties you were facing from this Draconian statutory crime.
How about a little sympathy for your brethren who put a lifetime of THEIR freedom on the line so YOU could have some good, clean, legit LSD???
Only a handful of years ago, OUR GOVERNMENT was dosing innocent, unsuspecting American citizens, servicemen, and prisoners with LSD, and not one of THOSE fuckers spent even one day in jail. They were branded HEROS. You have forgotten your own country's dirty tricks and history, and fallen prey to their propaganda.
NO American citizen should be subjected to these kinds of penalties. It is both cruel and hypocritical for a government which has behaved so reprehensibly in the past with respect to the EXACT SAME CHEMICAL.

This is true, was a U.S. vendor not mentioned but I believe he only sold marijuana...
Do the thousands of customers face any sort of threat? Doesn't seem likely to go after so many (in my mind, innocent) people but I know how the feds like to make examples out of things like this.
edit: it seems like there were multiple vendors not mentioned. other than the U.S. vendor though I think the majority of them were EU.

Adam was a piss poor vendor if you ask me. He was charging out the frame for mediocre doses. The farmers market was formed on the premis that it was to sell psychedelics ONLY. It started with just good bud and doses. Orders took forever to arrive and everything was extremely over priced. The no MDMA stance dissolved and they started selling K too. His greed and sloppiness took him down, and I can assure you that I will not lose any sleep over it. I do feel mildly bad for some of the customers who will never get their back orders. Fuck it though...all is fair in love and war.

I'd be curious to know what an ounce goes for these days
I guess I will check that out - what page of the 68 pages is that on? I was thinking when NB said 3 times the 10g amount that it was carrier + LSD, not just crystal, but wow...guess I will read and find out. Definitely sucks, and NB put it in perspective by showing the absolute hipocracy of putting people in jail for life for the same activities that governmental officials performed (but I'd bet this happens with almost every crime on the books when I think about it)

Page 10 line 16. $2,160 is apparently the going rate for over an ounce Also, the undercover was the buyer.

According to SWIM orders were prompt and legit. And it wasn't the products they were selling that had anything to do with them being taken down. It was ultimately their payment methods they implemented which included Paypal, cashdrops, pecunix etc...
I have to wonder though, will the DEA go after the customers? Seems like they couldn't do shit anyway since the product was already used.

They already have taken down the people they could and/or want to get; hence the undisclosed arrests. Say what you want about his promptness but I waited over 8 months for a zip of hash one time. Bottom line is they got greedy and they got stupid. Back when he was ravesupply he sucked too. You would have to wait months!! Bad vendor gets busted...tragedy. Hopefully the world recovers from this one.

Actually the one I was referring to was not from the US. The one you are thinking of was a great guy honestly, same with joot. I hope he stays outta this mess.

Joot was one of them taken down unfortunately. The busted grow ops are probably the 3 from the US which weren't mentioned in the indictment.
It mentions police from a certain country in Europe cooperated but no arrests from that country were made. Interesting.
Anyways for protection of us and the vendors I don't think we should speak specifics. Tis a tragedy to think one of them is a poor college student with his whole life ahead of him, just turned 20 a few days before they were arrested, and now face life in prison simply for ALLEGEDLY middlemanning the money between the customers and vendors through PayPal.

the indictment mentions that there are un indicted co-conspirators. Another great question is why were some of the co-conspirators not indicted? i counted about 4 vendors not listed. its hard to believe that a vendor in the United Police States didn't get arrested. One name is strangely close to LEO. i wounder if any vendors snitched. but probably at least one was a DEA, i would suspect. i remember a member asking how to become a vendor. an undercover? also its been disgusted that someone was messaging people fishing for connects. seems possible that the informant was doing just that

How many times did you order exactly? No doubt you were just unlucky. I never had any problems with Adam. I used 5 different vendors and every order made it within 2 weeks. Prices were higher than street prices in general, but wasn't that to be expected?
MDMA was never for sale on the main farmers market store. Adam set up a separate forum and store for mdma/mda recently, which was only accessible by existing customers.

Glenrothes: man arrested as part of international drugs investigation
Published on Wednesday 18 April 2012 16:45
Officers from the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency (SCDEA) have arrested a man, aged 28, for offences in relation to the supply of controlled drugs.
SCDEA officers, working in conjunction with colleagues from Fife Constabulary and acting on information from colleagues at the American Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), conducted a search at a house in Glenrothes, Fife. They recovered a large quantity of class ‘A’ controlled drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 with a value in excess of £20,000.
The investigation centres around an on-line narcotics market place ‘The Farmers Market’ currently being investigated by American authorities.
The man has been held in custody and is due to appear at Kirkcaldy Sherriff Court on 18 April 2012.
Detective Chief Superintendent Tony Mole, Head of Investigations, SCDEA said: “Seizing illegal drugs and targeting drug dealers remain to be priority areas for the SCDEA.
“This is part of an international investigation spanning 34 countries and we will continue to support our law enforcement partners both nationally and internationally to bring those responsible for this evil trade to justice.
“Our message to those involved in the distribution and supply of illegal drugs is clear. It doesn’t matter where you operate or where you try to hide. We will track you down and we will make you pay for your crimes.”

Sorry for the thread necromancy, but I just found out about this now. This is sad, and bodes ill for other operations. TFM had been around under various names for a long time, and although they may have made some security mistakes with payment methods, it was much more secret than SR, PIP, and the other famous ones. The admins were good people. One of them was a terminal cancer patient, who wanted to provide other patients with the medicine they needed. Others were psychedelic enthusiasts, who wanted to facilitate consciousness expansion. The no-hard-drug policy really created an atmosphere of trust and mutual appreciation of these substances. I would never consider buying anything through SR, but somehow TFM always seemed safe. Figures.

Jesus Christ careful ressurecting a title that can be current, I understand your stance on SR but I love it and if it disappeared it'd suck and that's what I thought happened when you posted this. "Hard drugs" is a rather bold statement but to each their own man, opinions are like an asshole man everyone's got one but ihear you.
I never got the chance to check out TFM and I'm sorry that you feel great people were losses I know I'd hate if SR was busted but to be honest TFM should have stepped it up though and protected everyone by not allowing those types of payments.
Haven't heard of PiP but I hope they're doing better than TFM about that. Again I'm sorry you lost a great place I wish I knew it when it was safe =\

By Mike Petchenik NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Federal investigators say a Milton man is one of several masterminds behind an international online drug ring.
An indictment obtained by Channel 2's Mike Petchenik accuses 31-year-old Ryan Rawls and seven other men of operating an online "farmer's market" that sold illicit narcotics, including LSD, marijuana and ketamine.
The indictment alleges the group had some 3,000 customers in all 50 states and in 24 countries, with sales exceeding $1 million. The men face multiple charges, including conspiracy to distribute.
Specifically, Rawls is accused of selling LSD under the moniker "jootgatter" over several years.
Police arrested the alleged ringleader, Marc Willems, in the Netherlands on Monday, as well as another suspect, Michael Evron, in Argentina. An indictment also charges Jonathan Colbeck, Brian Colbeck, Jonathan Dugan, George Matzek and Charles Bigras for their role in the alleged ring.
DEA agents arrested Rawls at his apartment off Morris Road Monday. Petchenik talked to several witnesses who saw agents converge on the complex.
"I came out and all these cops were coming out of regular cars," Rachel Aufrere said.
Brian Eligado told Petchenik he was surprised by the arrest and the allegations.
"We moved all the way up here to get away from all that kind of stuff," he said. "I guess it's everywhere."
