Quote: monkeyman2104 said: Hey, nice to see a fellow UK grower.
Im using the same jars and have found it difficult to get no condensation after PC'n.
I wonder if it is the jars, as these dont have a rubber ring like the american ones (just an idea)
How did your PF Teks go, iv just got a few started two days ago, no signs of life yet!!
Grower is a bit of a stretch for a describing this one!
As far as I can tell, condensation isn't a huge issue if there's no standing water. There wasn't standing water or even much water at all in these, obviously that's a moot point now they're all fucked anyway
PF Tek went well, so well I got cocky and thought I could get away with cloning (potential for contam #1) and using untested LC (potential for contam #2) on my second grow! First grow was 10 jars and came out around 80 grams dry, although I threw a few away as they were damp and rotting. Pics are in my profile, the green marked bags I threw. Oh BTW it'll take a good few days, maybe a week before you see growth so don't bother looking too hard at them for a while.
New plan is to get a spore vial, go to a small grain jar and use this tek to get mycellium water. The same place I got the stones sells spore vials so it's a small annoyance but at least by buying the stones I got to try them out!
Well today has been a sad day, repeating my multiple sterilising sessions of a few days ago, but this time to kill the nasties so I can re-use my jars!
On the upside, I ordered a spore vial and am going to go GLC so hopefully the next grow is foolproof
Well not much has happened since last post, here's the only remaining uncontammed jars from last time, PF tek B+:
This also turned up in the mail today :
Small amount of grains soaking now for a first run, going to do 1 jar then a GLC tek to innoc the other jars. Original plan being repeated basically, rye grain, short grain brown rice and now I've found another test substrate - barley.
In the continuing saga of the B+ jars, 2 of them are virtually 100%. The others only grew at one site out of the 4 so are taking a while, probably around 50% done now. I've taken the near 100% ones out of the incubator and left the others in. Pic of done ones:
No sign of the grain jar I'm planning on using for GLC doing anything yet. It's only been 6 days so I guess the answer is patience....however I've never had much of that, so for something to do (and in case the GLC jar doesn't work) I did a PK tek jar and a honey LC today.
After inoculation:
Labelled up:
Translation is - - Sclerotia in Brown rice flour and coffee - 27/03/2012 - Open air inoculation - Sclerotia in Honey LC - 27/03/2012 - Open air inoculation
Hopefully this will give me some more stuff to experiment with, and at the very least some stones and/or a PF jar to fruit to get some prints.
No sign of growth in the grain jar I knocked up on 21/03. Not sure if that's a write-off, or sclerotia is just heller slow. We'll see.
Growth in the LC already, although as I found out last time that doesn't mean it's necessarily growth of sclerotia myc!
No sign of anything in the PF cake inoculated 6 days ago, no real surprise there.
B+ still coming on well, this is most definitely a 'back burner' project as I have enough shrooms to last a good 6 months but this should hopefully fruit well as the summer is coming here now.
B+ is currently a lonely looking 2 cakes that are just starting to pin in the SGFC.
I think my sclerotia culture vial must be dud, as I've seen no mycellium growth from anything I've put them on.
Plan for today is:
- Make a cube LC to check that it's not a problem with my technique etc - Stick some cube spores in some rye grain jars in order to try and make a cube GLC. I'm doing one jar with tyvek filter and one jar with polyfill, as I am also suspicious of my tyvek's filtration properties as I can see through it so I'm not sure I have the right stuff. - Stick some more sclerotia spores in a jar or rye grass seed in order to see if that works! For this I will use brand new syringe and needle in order to remove that contam vector.
I haven't got any, but am considering it as a last resort. Not really sure what to do with it either, but I'm sure it'd be better than continually prepping grain jars for no reason.
The more I think about it the more sure I am that the tyvek isn't right, which makes everything potentially contaminated other than my one polyfill jar in this batch!
LC is coming on....SLOWLY. For reference, is double tyvek ok? I got a bit paranoid when I could see daylight through it so assumed it wasn't going to be the greatest filter and stuck another layer over the top of the jars, that wouldn't stop them growing at all would it?
