Verpa bohemica?
Guess I should have cut the cap in half.
What do you think?
Northern IL, mixed hardwoods, burned area. Finally got some humidity.
Just found the one.

I think tomorrow is going to be the day they explode.
they've just been waiting for the rain.
I'll be out early, going right back to this spot.
This spot is in a forest preserve where they burn back the prairie every few years- edge of the woods/grass.
I combed the whole area on my hands and knees today. Just the one so far. and a few mycena.
Good luck

Thanks! I've scouted out 4 likely candidate spots. I'm not even looking at logs tomorrow.

Where I grew up in Southern Illinois everyone called them dogpeckers. They are good eating but not as good as a normal Morel. Not enough cap.
I have not found a Morel here in Central Illinois in 2 weeks. Been too dry, rained like hell the last couple days though. I think this week should be good if temps are normal.
Good luck!

those there doge peckers smell like semen, "the miniature spermatic" Mitrophora semilibera. i eat them anyhow, last year's monsters, some 14'', i suggest eating the small tender ones, and as fresh as possible.

Nothing today. I wasn't expecting the temperature to drop twenty degreees.
This wind needs to stop.

I'm glad they're synonymous though, they should be.

Do squirrels eat morels?
I didn't make it back to my spot until after noon, felt like it was already picked over, but not by people.
Lots of little holes where I was expecting morels.
And a few little Polyporus arcularius
Am I crazy to think I might find Ovoids in this area later this year? I don't think they've ever been found in IL.

I have heard Turkeys eat morels. I am sure other animals do too.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Someone find some Ovoids in Illinois. I would be floored if they are not somewhere in the Wabbash or Kaskaskia basins.
