More Than Mere Magic Mushrooms

Don't know if anyone has posted this yet and beat me to it but here it is: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/this-could-be-big-abc-news/more-mere-magic-mushrooms-154207424.html Click the link to see the video. This is what the article has to say:
This week we're talking about fungus two ways. One that can survive exclusively on polyurethane and another that can replace Styrofoam.
Both polyurethane and styrofoam are not biodegradable, so without a solution, all the plastic bottles and old toys we throw out every year will be sitting in landfills for centuries.
Yes, you can recycle plastic, but that just means turning it into another product and recycling hasn't sufficiently slowed the production of new plastic.
According to a Yale study, globally we produced 245 million tons of plastic in 2006, compared to only 1.5 million tons in 1950.
One of the fungi we're looking at is called pestalotiopsis microspora. It was discovered by a group of Yale researchers on an expedition in Ecuador and can subsist on polyurethane alone in airless environments, like the bottom of a landfill.
The other comes from a couple of college friends who discovered that the sticky substance on the bottom of mushrooms called mycelium could be turned into a glue and when that glue is combined with corn husks and other food byproducts it takes on a form similar to Styrofoam. Their company, Ecovative wants used Styrofoam to become mulch, not waste.
A future with less plastic and more mulch, all thanks to fungus.

We need to spread that strain through shroomery. Could do some real good.

So someone could obtain a Pestalotiopsis Microspora culture and have a pit in their backyard full of their accumulated Polyurethane plastic waste, somehow apply culture, and trash is gone without raping the Earth? Count me in!
While watching the mycelium styrofoam vid included in the link, I had a question: would ANY species' mycelium work? And also, would one be able to use spent mycelium to create that styrofoam? If so, then professional gourmet mushroom growers like RogerRabbit with tons of spent mycelium should jump on this bandwagon and make some $$$ before it's monopolized!

This is cool cause we could use that landfill land to do something else, but in the end plastic doesn't really hurt the earth that much. Its the continued production of plastics that are really bad for us, plus it uses petroleum products.
And why do we need styrofoam really? Whats wrong with popcorn?

When you say popcorn, do you mean the edible popped popcorn or is that slang for some packing product? Couldn't that get soggy, rot, and attract pests and ruin whatever was being packed with it?

Nah im talking popcorn. Idk about pests but popcorn basically doesn't rot, and as far as soggy, i mean how wet do you plan on getting your packaging? What are you shipping in it, a bag of ice?

no.
and im pretty sure they are using some type of ganoderma for the styrofoam.
and what sucks is, those mycelium packing blocks cost soo much money to produce, no one in their right mind would buy them.

In the future, you'll drink water out of a plastic bottle made from shrooms, then you can eat it and trip. Tha end.

I was surprised I was the first to post it. I thought it was pretty cool. I'm constantly trying to figure ways to make legal money in this hobby.

Lol no, I was thinking of a worst-case scenario, like being shipped overseas by boat, where maybe they didn't have the best protection against high humidity and moisture creeped in the package/container.

Well damn, but if they're using farmers' trash (corn stalks, etc) how could it get too expensive? Do they have to buy the trash/scraps? Or does the process itself cost money?
