coaxing P. eryginii to fruit??
    #16074450 - 04/11/12 09:01 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

...Trying a new strain and it won't pin.  Any tricks?  I have never scratched the surface to induce pinning but have heard others tell of it.  Or maybe an extreme temperature drop?  It just sits in its fully colonized bags of sawdust and bran.

Try waiting 6-8 weeks for it to colonize and 3 weeks in the FC.  Slow down the process.  I was try to push my kings to fast, and they don't like that.  Scracthing can give even pin set and higher yeilds but it is not neccesary.

I agree on the scratching issue.  Grobo has shown that
he got better pinsets (more, smaller, fruits IIRC)
when he scratched the top surface of his blocks.

I have not found that much incubation/consolidation
to be required to get good flushes from Kings.

Without doing anything to trigger them, I find pins
popping out all over my blocks not very long after
full colonization.

I have found that my sawdust blocks pinned faster and
better than my straw blocks.  This may change as I get
more experience with KOs.

Good luck,

JD

Try putting a block in the fridge overnight.  Hopefully, you'll have pins the next morning.  Good luck.

humm.... maybe this is just a bum strain?  It doesn't appear contamed at all and grows vigorously on agar, it colonizes the substrate then just sits there.  I keep wondering if I am missing something?

What is your substrate? Fruiting conditions? I just used a casing layer for the first time with kings and it worked out well. I had a bucket grow that i wound up just taking the top off and cutting the liner bag back. Nothing happened for a while and i had just cased my portabella and had some left over. I first cased half the exposed surface. Then a few days later i noticed pins popping through the cased side of the bucket. I then cased the rest. Got an ok flush from the original cased half and now have a second flush poping up all over. I have also just put into fruiting my first quart jar of supplemented saw dust that had been scratched, recolonized, then just tonight put into fruiting. Time will tell how this works out.
