 almost soiled myself (50 gallon mono) (fruiting, pics)*Ûpdätêd*

just got back from lowes, I was planning on buying 2 more tubs for mono's.
and I saw it a 50 gal tub
18.16 x 21.81 x 43.81"
it is by far the largest tub I have ever seen!
I'm sorry if these are old news I haven't been down that isle in a while, I have always "inherited" my tubs
I am about to go see how many quarts its going to take, then decide what ratio and such
I just had to tell someone.

was 23 something
its going to need around 35 quarts to hit the 4" mark
I'm thinking 10 quarts of spawn and 25 quarts coire verm and sphagnum

Other than for novelty reasons (just to say you did it) why would anyone want to use a tub that big? It's like putting all your eggs in one basket, so to speak. What happens if the mean green pays you a visit? You lose the whole damn thing.

its ok I have a lot of spawn and ill be doing a dozen or so g2g's in a few and I have spawn that has been consolidating for over a month and spare jars and enough spore prints to last a lifetime.
when I saw it I had to have it, ill admit that went through my head but I feel confident.

thanks, hopefully be updating with some pics in a few weeks .
about to get to pasteurizing and bore some holes.
I'm thinking I should use 8 holes .
6 on the sides at sub level and 2 on the ends below the handles.
or should I do 4 low 2 high on the sides and 2 high on the ends - staggered holes.

haha I bet the cashier was wondering why I was so happy to buy a tub, I know I was grinning from ear to ear.
as soon as I saw it I drug the whole stack in to the middle of the isle so I could check the dimensions.
if it works out I should only have to run it every few months to supply me and my friends needs.

I have one of these sitting in my attic right now. I originally thought about using it for bulk but then i just decided to use a martha setup. Good luck though, I'll be excited to read your follow up.

I think I'm going to use gt I havr that and ec but I liked the gt's better, but this is all MS so who knows.

Check around on this forum. I remember seeing someone do a 50 gallon mono a couple years ago.
And yeah, it looked like you would think it would. And a successful grow on top of that.
I mean, if you have the space and resources, then why not try it?

I'd not recommend going over 4" but to each their own.
I'm mostly posting to keep updated on this giant project.

I'm not trying to break any new ground I had every intention to buy 2 normal tubs,but things don't always go to plan.
I'm currently waiting on the last 10 quarts of sub to cool then I will be mixing in the spawn .

I added the spawn just now.
actual bulk sub consists of:
12-13 quarts coir
6 quarts vermiculite
2 quarts sphagnum
10 quarts of GT and the densest mycelium I have ever encountered, I didn't sanitize a butter knife like I usually do.
luckily I bombed the room prior to adding spawn, took a bit longer than I had liked it to.
but I still have a good feeling.

its looking good soo far.
from what I can see through the packing tape a lot of the exposed wbs are already recovering and fluffy white.
I have a 4' fl ballast with cool white 4200 K bulbs in it, I'm going to get a few 6500 K fl's for this ballast and compare to my mono that's in another room adjacent my mega-mono that also has 4' 4200 K fl that I'm currently using.

quick update: everything is going quite well it visually 80% colonized and I cracked the lid to take a whiff and it smells great as well.
I wanted to initiate fructification 4-20 but its looking more like 22-24th ish

Not bragging, but I pulled 11oz dry from a 3-4" sub in a 71qt mono (17.75 gal). I sure hope you pull way more than that...
Don't rush the fruiting parameters IMO; let it consolidate for 5-7 days after 100% white.

my biggest pull so far is 5.5 oz from first flush and this has twice the sub and spawn, of course I hope for more 10 oz on the first flush but well see.
its been consolidating for 2 days now.

well today was a fine day then I come home check on my babies and I seen this as soon as I turned on the light through the packing tape
I just got done moding the lid and installed my new 6500k 4' 40w FL's, been using 4100 cool white and these are intensely more blue I was impressed, ill be going to lowes tomorrow for 2 more to replace in the other ballast.
here is a pic of the tub's sub or atleast what I could fit in the pic.
shouldn't be long now, ill try to keep updated.

yes, I believe someone posted that earlier in the thread but its definitely worth another look, gives me inspiration.
but if it produces as well or better than 2 tubs I think I may get another and just do big tubs, I know there's the "eggs in one basket" "theory but if everyone believed that everyone would grow from shoe boxes.
other than a numb palm from breaking up 10 quarts of spawn it was barely any more work than a normal mono.

I hear ya. Really, once 1 qt is colonized, g2g is so fuckin fast it doesn't really matter. Plus WBS and coir is really quite cheap in the end

Dude, you're so right about GT. It's been my healthiest MS ever! Super dense, fluffy, rhizomorphic, really nice pin set, & very fast colonization. Where'd you get your syringe?

I actually ordered my gt's about a week before I started using this forum from a non sponsor, although it took 5 weeks and 3 un replied emails its was 15 bucks shipped and it was thick black looked like they like a little water with there spores.

mass knotting was delayed a few days longer than I expected, but its kicking now.

Has anyone ever successfully cloned a funny mutant like Mr. Chow here, and gotten consistently similar mutants?
I guess I'm assuming not, since if someone did, there'd presumably be a few novelty cultures getting sold/passed around.

honestly I was expecting better but these jars were all MS.
this will be my last MS grow, I actually dumped 12 quarts of spawn in a mono with a few quarts of verm and mixed it up.
and I poured the unfinished ones under a bush outside and threw some dirt over it.
I have passed my goal of a qp a while ago I'm running out of freezer space.

final weight of first flush cracker dry is 8 oz and some change, not as good as I would have liked but I'm not trying to be greedy, and next flush should be a few oz.
I'm retiring this tub for a while after its done.
and basically starting from scratch, only isolates from here out

I bet more FAE and RH would have helped, but who knows. I find it very difficult to key in a mono with auto features. Perhaps I'm just not to a place of knowing how much of each to apply

yeah my sub always looked a little dry I tried slowly rehydrating it but didn't seem to work well.
and all the side pins I got kinda proved that.
but I think dunking is out of the question I don't see a 4' long cake staying intact so I have been doing lots of light misting.

Yeah, I wouldn't do that. I've read ppl doing that and ended up getting trich because the water would just sit there or you will ened up over saturating your cake. I would do even a heavy mist or a dunk

basically what I have been doing is spraying a very fine mist just enough to make my sub glisten but not wet every few hours that I'm home.
the pour might work but I imagine its would rehydrate unevenly if it would even soak in, there's a thick coat of mycelium on my sub it takes a few hours to evaporate mistings between sprays.
but the tub is still pretty heavy
I think I was actually giving too much fae for how often I was misting, it has 6 3" holes at sub level and I actually had to cut out some pins early because they were growing out the holes pushing my poly out of 2 holes for a few days before I noticed.

I don't dunk. I just do a heavy misting after I've picked. I've read about pouring water in the tub. And I did that once. I ended up having to take my tub and while holding the sub with one hand, tilting the tub with an other. Thankfully, my tubs aren't the super huge ones. So this wasn't to bad. But I think I'll stick with the misting!!

dunking imo is a bit over rated when dealing with bulk sub, at least with coir because I get great first flushes and comparably crap second flushes, I never went for third flush when using coir.
some day I'm going to get a nice digital floor scale and start weighing before and after each flush and dunk.

That's a good idea. This way, you can tell how much water you've actually lost. Just to say though, my tub is getting ready to go on it's fourth flush. I'm pretty sure though that after this flush, there won't be to much nutrients left. Since most of the last flush was from the sides. Still not signs of contams though.

i used to do something like this but i would just use a nice sized digi table scale
and weigh each flush wet to know about how much h20 to replace.

if your set on weighing the tub itself,then yeah your gunna need a floor scale,but the scale i work with has a max of 10lbs,it works to weigh my flushes.

well I couldn't remove a cake just to weigh it and I imagine a cake prior to first flush weighs 20-30 lb in a regular mono I'm guessing

im confusing you i believe  ,i am only weighing my wet fruits,that i pull from the sub.then apply a formula of 1ml h20 = 1 gram.then rehydrate the tubs accordingly.ya see.

So I'm not going to try to get too complicate this to much, but if a shroom is 90% water (and you would have to take this into count) and your wet weight is 100gm wet, you sub only really lost 90gm of water (this sounds right in my head, but I could be wrong). Maybe, Idk

yeah, that 10% comes from the substrate.
but just weighing the mushrooms pulled doesn't account for aspiration and evaporation.
although I'm shure it wouldn't be likely to be able to rehydrate back to pre first flush weight.
weighing tubs is most likely pointless but this is my hobby and I enjoy gathering and comparing info.
just not enough to go buy a floor scale.

Yeah, I'm really getting into this too. But there's so much info and it's easy to get information overload from all the reading one can do on here. And there's more than one site with info too. Someone sent me a link to it and asked me to check it out. And I found a few members from this site over there too!! it's crazy
