so every once and a while and twice today, my computer wipes gray and tells me to restart
ive looked into it and apparently its a memory problem
i dont really know the nuts and bolts of computers
but is this something that can be fixed cheaply
so i just need to by a memory upgrade?

This happened to my '07 Macbook Pro.
Basically just bought a new hard drive and payed for installation
A SeaGate Lost all memory that wasn't already backed up though.
Runs better now than the Mini Mac I'm typing on.

I assume you mean a kernel panic, how did you look into it and discover it's bad memory again?
You might want to try the Apple Hardware Test to see if it comes up with anything
" Use Apple Hardware Test. (If your computer came with an applications installation disc, Apple Hardware Test is on that disc; otherwise, itʼs on the Mac OS X installation disc.) Insert the disc, and then restart your computer while holding down the D key. If you just installed hardware, such as additional memory, Apple Hardware Test can tell you if itʼs incompatible, improperly installed, or defective. If you canʼt find Apple Hardware Test, take your computer to an Apple Authorized Service Provider."
On mine, since it's a Late 2011 Macbook Pro it has an internet apple hardware test by holding down Opt + D at start. This is only true of macs that shipped w/ Lion I believe.
If you do need memory, Crucial has a very easy memory advisor tool to find the right memory for your Mac... have had nothing but positive experiences with them.

Assuming that you mean kernel panic, it can be caused by many different things. There is a known hardware problem with 15" MacBook Pro Mid 2010. If you have one of these, take it in to get tested. There is three year extension on the warranty covering the very specific problem. The most common cause of a kernel panic is bad memory. The second most common cause is a failing hard drive. Sometimes a corrupt file system can also cause problems. Every now and then it is a faulty component such as the airport card or logic board.

it was a kernel panic... run that apple hardware test if you still have the installation media/install disc that came with the iMac, put the dvd in and hold down D on boot, maybe it will clue you in on whether or not it's bad ram...

download memtest and run it from single user mode, i only suggested the apple hardware test because i figured you might have it and would be easy enough for you to try, but memtest is more extensive...
