hello everyone-- probably my last post on the warm weather shiitake from our big Aloha buy last year--
This is the F strain-- I hope you can appreciate the number of pins these dudes have-it is truly way better than the TL2 I just posted. Also, these were inoculated way back in early December last year with the TL2 and were kept in the house at 76-79 degrees F, oh until maybe late January or early February, when I placed them in our garage. Please understand Texas has had a warm winter. I don't think we had any freezing days down here in the coastal part.
Now my temps outside are around the high 80's. Since they went outside about a week ago daytime temps have been 70-high 80's--nighttime from 60-75. I'm sure you would agree that is quite warm for most Shiitake. Nevertheless, these beauties are looking well. Please enjoy the pics--substrate is the same as TL2.

take care, houdinihar

It looks like a very large and awesome edible! It is grown commercially for food in China, and is found wild in Thailand. It grows on bran enriched sawdust. Considering it is a commercial mushroom, a culture shouldn't be impossible to find. mycochef apparently a culture of this nearly 2 years ago, but there was no follow-up: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/12598179#12598179 mycochef hasn't been seen here for 6 months.
I think it'd be a great Group Buy.
Aloha Medicinals has a few cultures for sale.

Weird....I do not see it on their site.
A search found only references to their online docs.
i.e. www.alohamedicinals.com/book2/chapter-10-01.pdf

Wow, that's great! It doesn't seem to be on their list of cultures PDF. Do you want to contact John, or should I?

Anyone involved here know the warmest weather shiitake strain from Aloha? Also a warm and cold weather log strain? I hate to bother Aloha if someone here knows the answer. I wish I had more to contribute to the knowledge base but I am still working out my shiitake production and not knowing the fruiting parameters does not help my confidence. I will get it dialed in but in the mean time I want to work with a couple of known strain parameters.
Thanks Trout

I'm not experienced at growing shiitakes, so I looked up the temperature ranges for fruiting. This info was gotten from Field and Forest Products, except for the cold weather high temp which through a typo seems to be missing (and which resellers blindly copied!). I got the cold weather high temp from Stamets' site.
Cold weather: 45-60 F. Wide range: 55-75 F. Warm weather: 50-85 F.
For outdoor fruiting, you need to know the temperature category of the strain, of course. But if you're doing a controlled temp indoor grow, it looks like 60 degrees would be safe for all ranges. Or do warm weather strains fruit more prolifically at the high end of their temperature range?

Hey Trout,
I want to recommend S75 from Aloha.
(or from me ;0)
It does very well in So Cal summer weather, I can attest.
Take care,

Thanks guys.
Terry I was part of the group buy so I have 40+ strains but I do not know which fits into each category and they do not seem to be labeled well in there strain list. My indoor temps in the summer will be in the 75-85 range. My garage will be even warmer and in the winter garage temps will be around 40-60(could be heated but why?). Indoor is out for winter growing at this point.
Java I have S75 and will give it another go but I would like to find another strain for using pasteurized subs with a high spawn rate for quicker colonization/lower contams without S75's mutant issues.
I think I will have to introduce myself to Aloha and try to get more info from them.

More info would be great, trout. I'm fruiting mine indoors, at 60 degrees F. until otherwise informed.

Trout, i mentioned earlier that the F strain and the TL2 are warm weather strains. my temps down here have been in the 80's with both fruiting outside. houdinihar

A few of other warm weather strains can be identified by their place of origin.
ED - Thailand U8 - Maui CS2 - Qingyuan, China CS3 - Qingyuan, China QUA GU - Qingyuan, China
Those and the ones houdinihar mentioned are all I've been able to figure out as warm weather strains.
DON seems to be a cold weather strain, based on information from a paper my its cultivator, John Donoghue.
That's all I've been able to identify.

Here's my CS2 project. Lots of tiny mushrooms, no cold shocking required. It was a douglas fir sawdust block with wheat bran. The best pinset I ever got from a shiitake block!
