That's complete bullshit.
Even though the general consensus is that smaller fruit bodies are more potent by weight, mushrooms don't loose potency when they grow.
You pick them before the veil breaks because having spores everywhere is a mess.

No, it's not bullshit.  It's fact.  Pins and small fruits are more potent by weight than large, open cap mushrooms.

The second part of your post is only partly correct in that we pick before the veil breaks to prevent spores dropping en masse.  However, it's not simply because we don't want to have to clean up the mess, but for the fact that once there is a major spore drop, the mycelium enters die-back mode, weakens, and green molds soon follow.  I've never seen a massive flush follow a massive spore drop on the same substrate, regardless of species.  It just doesn't happen.

This fact has been very well known for decades.  In TMC published in 1983, Paul Stamets while speaking of P cubensis writes, "One particular problem is the massive release of spores from the mature mushrooms. These spores often times cover the casing layer and can inhibit further pinhead development. . . For these reasons, one should pick the mushrooms at the stage when the veil begins to tear or soon thereafter."

It would be wise to check ones facts before calling bullshit on people who have been growing mushrooms longer than most members here have been alive. :nono:

That's exactly what I said.
Yes, the concentration of psychoactive chemicals decreases as the fruitbody matures, but not the total amount.

Yes, I remember having read that passage in TMC myself. I have also experienced this effect myself. You're right, I should have mentioned that too.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to insult anyone. However, I didn't say anything wrong in the factual sense, even though I should have been more precise and polite.

Ok, so I don't think it's going well at all :frown:  Here are the two trays: http://imgur.com/a/po8rs Sorry for the shitty pics, all I have to take them with right now is an old phone.  These trays are around 15x10 cm, 6x4 inches.  There are very few shrooms, and the larger ones are darkish (as if they were bruised), bent, and withered.  I have gathered a couple of very large healthy ones from the first tray yesterday, but no more seem to be growing.  It's been over a month and my total yield is about 15 shrooms, most quite small, and mostly coming from the first "pseudo-flush" (the first pics I showed you guys).  Did I do something wrong?  Can I fix it?

Buy a dehydrator! Thats how I dry them! 24-48 hours  on 95 (the lowest setting)and they are dry! Definitely NO loss in potency that myself or anyone else can see from it. And shrooms start to rot as soon as you pick them so try and get them dry ASAP! The can stay good for about a week in the fridge, but after that they wont be any good. There's tons of ways to dry them, but the dehydrator works best for me.

Have you dunked that tray? They might need a little bit of moisture.

I've been spraying them with a fine mist every two days, as per the instructions that came with this kit.

Dunking would help rehydrate the substrate for a new flush. Misting will not provide the same moisture content as a distilled water bath for 12-24 hours.

I don't have cakes like in PF Tek, though, it's just a tray with mycelium covered with earth (and presumably some nutrients?).  How do I dunk it?

Fill the tray with water for 6-8 hours, weigh down the sub. because it will float. Let drain and return to FC. Mist as needed!

Many ways to do it.  here's a link to get your ideas flowing:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/2130225#2130225

I often put bamboo skewers across the top of the tray (make holes near top of tray) to hold down the substrate and soak right in the tray for several hours.  Then drain well.

Thanks, I'll try that!

One more thing, I've got a few small ones with grey-green stalks that don't seem to be growing any more.  What are they?  Some are larger than pins, so I'm not sure if they're aborts.

Damn, I just found out I won't be around from tomorrow morning to Sunday afternoon.  Can I leave the trays to drain inside the incubator?
