The species you are talking about is P. subaeruginosa, not P. tasmaniana. Subs are roughly two times as potent as cubes.
And yes, putting them in rectified spirits to create a tincture will work. You're best off using something that's 90% + alcohol. I don't know of any bottleshops around here that sell alcohol that strong, but there's plenty on the mainland which you can order from. And a bit of ascorbic acid should help the process. Good luck.

Went out at 8 this morning for a hunt. I was very happy to find that my main patch from last year has started fruiting massive amounts. I would have picked at least 250g just from one patch. I couldn't even walk through the patch without accidentally stepping on a few. I spent a good hour there and didn't even pick them all.
Ended up with a bit over 400g total.
First find of the day was this one. I thought it was a liberty cap at first, but I think it's just an abnormal looking sub.

Some wavy cap subs

And the total haul

Hi everyone. I'm very new here and to the hunting game. I've done a few hunts and have found and identified very few subs in my local area but have mostly been unsuccessful.. maybe I'm looking in the wrong places? Do subs grow in sandy soil? Also i know wer not allowed to put up specific place names but this should be vague enough, has anyone had any luck around the Kingston area (habitat wise)? Thanks everyone this site has been a great help getting started!

Don't ask for location-specific information.
Yes, subs most definetly grow in sandy soils, and they grow in most suburbs/towns south of Hobart. You're a little late this season, after all the dry I've only seen mostly dried, sorry-looking specimens lately. That would make it a challenge to identify them, unless you already knew well what you were looking for. About a month ago I saw several thousand in and around town, it was a ripper start to the season.
Look in rank grass, fireweed clumps and blackberry clumps. I saw several last week while walking my dog at a popular dog-walking spot, growing on woodchips.
Good hunting.

how are my tassy mates ? had a good couple of pics lately, and one suprise find, as i was riding my pushie to my fav patch i noticed around 40 subs growing from a heavily euc wood chipped garden bed in front of an industrial area . will pic them soon.
i was not to sure as, i have never seen them grow there b4 so i pinched the old cap and cowa bunga . bruised blue within 2 mins yippee horray.
they all have perfect sub characteristics
i hope that the moistness in mother earth has been favourible in your picking.

Nice shots Nevermind, your 'abnormal looking sub' could in fact be something entirely new... If you kept it, keep it seperate from the rest of your finds and make a new thread about it, it's very interesting.

Ahhh beautiful WA, just popped over to admire some of the AMAZING shots.
The Pscilocybes are very funny looking from the ones i found whilst up there, i must get back up there some time and return to the true home.
How are all your seasons going? not too much patch rape i hope?
Peace from SA S&T

I agree. id say not sub at all, that stem looks very semilanceata like, same thickness, colouring, and growth characteristics.
What was it growing in? If it was in poo, chances are psilocybe alutacea, as the cap doesnt resemble semilanceata. Check out the description and see if it matches what you have. A visit to the herbarium may be in order .

It was growing in amongst grass in one of my sub patches.
In my other thread it was ID'd as Stropharia or Leratiomyces.
I should have separated it from the rest, but it's dry now and I don't know which is which. It did look like a psilocybe species to me, but then again I'm no expert. I'm not sure if there was any bruising, but from looking at the gills it appears to have very similar colored spores to subs.

I woke up at 7:30 this morning and went out into the freezing cold (well not quite freezing, it was 2 degrees) for a hunt. My main patch has been mowed over so there wasn't much to be found there, but I hit up all my other patches on the way back and found a few.
I found this group of picked mushrooms and a few crab legs just sitting in the middle of the bush. Not sure how the crab got there.

These three reminded me of P. subsectoids. They were picked from a new patch that I found today.

How's everyone else doing? Haven't seen anyone else post pics since page 15.

Luvly looking subs your finding there, Nevermind Looks f'n chilly.
Are P. subsectoids a variation of subaeruginosa, or something different? Or is it just cause their cap doesn't go frilly? heard that P. subsections are suppose to be quite potent.
The shell fish is odd.......... Theres some scollop and mussel shells as well. Is it a bird or has some one lost their paella?

P. subsectoids is a New Zealand species I believe. I remember reading that it has not actually been described and P. subsectoids is just the name that it has been given for the moment. It looks to be a variation of P. subaeruginosa but may be a completely different species all together. Don't quote me on any of this though, I'm just going on what I can remember from the very little research I have done.
I'm not even sure if the mushrooms I found are P. subsectoids. They are most likely just subs. They way the cap sort of has a 'frill' all around it and grows slightly inwards towards the stem made me think it looked close to P. subsectoids.
Not really sure about the crab and the shells. I'm guessing it was just kids that put them there as there is a school and a beach not too far away.

Thank you. I'm interested to find out exactly what it is.
Looks like a psilocybe sp. to me, but the lack of blue bruising makes me think otherwise. I wish I had separated it from the rest and got some more pictures and examined it closer for any bruising.

Got 94 grams dry at the moment. Some look almost black, but it's just very heavy blue bruising.

Hoping to have 200+ at the end of the season.

Thanks for the advice tas75 but it sure doesn't seem like the season is over just yet.lol. I've found a few since I was last on but still haven't found any abundant patches. I've decided to grind my mushies but I thought I would find out how long they will last once I do that. Anyone have any ideas? Cheers all!

Bit disappointed today. My patches have really slowed down and there are a lot of semi dried mushrooms about. Need some good rain to get things going again.
Here's the sunrise from this morning...

And the total haul... about 80g.
