one way to describe the actual location is look at Google earth and locate Pillarcitos lake...the creek that runs down from Pillarcitos into Crystal Springs is where the nest is and what they use to fish..the nest is located on crystal springs reservoir, not the creek itself, after the stream enters the lake and just across from the tiny penninsula at the end of 'portola road' (no public access on portola road---dirt road - san francisco water department only)
you can actually see the snag tree (bare tree) that is being used as a guide to help locate the nest on the satellite

Sweet thanks. I found an old vineyard up in there . A bald eagle nest takes the cake tho...

this is what the actual view looks like from skyline near the san mateo creek dam and 280 bridge, across from the famous flinstones house...you need big lens to zoom in to this 500mm 30x and above
the audubon people put a little pile of rocks at the turn off on skyline to mark it, but it's likely to get very popular and have a crowd with big scopes and lenses coming soon next month on warmer days as the chicks hatch...they'll be flying around much more then

the nest is behind the eucalyptus grove in the background on the other side of the lake..the audubon society has one of the best photos so far..i mean a really big lens on this one

Amanita muscaria is fruiting right now? I like the pic with the hypholomas that's a very good pic. 6 is Tubaria I believe. Also 9 does look a bit like Lyophyllum decastes, looks pretty dried out though.

I am finding them in different flavors. Just ask your local pine tree directions. I found some var. formosa the other day I think. I think this shows the concentric rings you were talking about Alan. I didn't get too many good pics of the volvas so I'll go back.

This too. Formosa right?

I went out today to look for some and I definitely found some Aminitas. Is this muscaria though? Is this color acceptable in the bay area?

Even if it's not muscaria I'm glad I found my first Aminitas.

Thank you Alan. I was thinking pantherina too but from what I read they start brown then fade. These little ones look to be somewhat yellow, no brown, but it looks to fade when it matures. Also, I read that pantherina may still be consumed as a more potent fly agaric. Would you agree it's safe for consumption if I took a small test sample?

Given that the younger ones are yellow, A. gemmata is also a possibility.
They may be stronger than muscaria and are less tested, but I don't know of anything seriously toxic in Amanita section Amanita. I think they are likely to be ok to eat in small amounts, but personally I stick to eating muscaria because it is more of a known quantity.
Muscaria is out now, check the patch by the pines in John Mclaren park. PM me if you would like GPS coordinates.

Hmm I looked at pics of A. gemmata and it more closely fits the physical features of my specimens. I think I'll toss my Amanitas and just wait till I get some actual muscaria, just to be on the safe side.
That park's in SF, I live in Santa Cruz county if i knew earlier I probably would have made the trip up but its getting late and I have class tomorrow. However this weekend sounds like a big possibility. Do you think they'll be out then? I really want the opportunity to see this fungi in person.

Perhaps next weekend, it depends on the rain.
I have found A. muscaria at Marshall Field at UCSC, under coast live oak. Mushroom hunting is legal there.

This is what the last rain brought! Went hunting for 5 hours with main objective to find A. muscaria. Didn't find a single one even after digging through pine and oak crap. I did find a bunch of other yummy mushies!!!
Tremella mesenterica

Pleurotus ostreatus

Hygrocybe punicea

Lactarius fragilis

Is this Clitocybe nuda?

Under pine stuff. At first I thought it was agaric. Is it Russula?

Chantrelle? Did not lactate

Hygrocybe flavescense

Check the upper regions of John Mclaren park.

Tremella mesenterica
More likely Tremella aurantia. Was there Stereum nearby?

Lactarius fragilis
That species does not grow in California, you have Lactarius rubidus.

Looks more like a Cortinarius to me.

Russula silvicola.

Can you post some good pictures of this species?
I would like to ID this for you, but honestly, I have no idea.

I use Mushroom's Demystified to key my finds out as best I can. This book is old and quite outdated so I'm just using names from that book.
There was Stereum hirsutum growing on the same log. Tremella mesenterica is the misapplied name?
I wasn't aware that rubidus and fragilis were separate species. On mykoweb it says the names or synonymous.
That is definitely a Cortinarius after reading the description and comparing mine. It has a brown spore print and the immature specimen I have is showing a cortina. I tried keying this out and it led me to C. evernius. There is no viel remnant, and one thing that stood out is that the color had faded a lot in the last 24 hours. What do you think?
As for my "chantrelle" Those were the only pics I took and I threw it away sorry. I think thinker is right though lol.

Clitocybe nuba looks very similar, but it will never have the brown-orange spores on the stem. I usually find them with an incurved margin and the smell is fantastic! It's slightly sweet and very unique IMO. One of my favorite edibles so far, and they are flushing really well in my searches.

rain rain come again so we can see our fungi friends
I had some pics of some red russulas but my camera went for a swim awhile ago so it doesn't do what I tell it. when I find my book I get i.d.s on them. amanita is obvious

Found some goodies up in the Berkeley hills today
Chlorophyllum brunneum, Clitocybe nuda, oysters, about a pound of candy caps, and what I think are Panus conchatus and Amanita velosa.

Panus conchatus? Found on what looked like an oak log.

Is this Amanita velosa? The thing is so faded and slug eaten that I'm not expecting anyone to be able to make a positive ID, but at least I know it is not a Russula and definitely has an Amanita "feel". It was growing under an oak next to a path.
