Kick-fuckin-ass man, same here. Eagle in. uh, well shit I seem to forget. '08? hahaha. Philmont BLEW my mind. I would LOVE to go back there and be a guide or something, work there, etc. I did a canoe trek in upstate NY similar to what I believe you're describing, at a place called Sabatis. Let me tell you, apparently the region we were in was a temperate rain forest or something like that, rained almost constantly, boy I was miserable. But that was back when I was like 15 and before I learned to appreciate it and just man up. Our guide (what it sounds like you're doing) was called DIRTY DAN. Now there was good reason for that - hairiest, stinkiest guy I've ever met in my life. Refused to use soap or deodorant - he had some theory about how the government uses it to bring us from our roots and true identity by masking our "natural human odor." Guy was OUT there, he would always sneak off after we made camp to "fish" which was actually just him dipping skoal away from the scouts and smoking some trees. He would always explicitly tell us to "never go in his pack unless you want to die." Great memories, Boy Scouts was definitely one of my favorite parts of growing up. I'm very jealous! Have fun man.
edit - we met this guy's girl when we got back to base camp, and she mighta been hairier and stinkier than he was....

sounds solid. Only problem I foresee is having to put your special "brownies" in with all the other food the scouts have up in the fuckin' trees to protect from the bears. Can't have the little kids accidentally nomin' on those funky smelling brownies after dinner or first thing in the morning! hahha Or maybe bears aren't a problem out there? I just know they are a royal pain the ass here.

True true. I always forget you can bake thc into literally any fucking food or form you want. that would be a lot easier to carry, and would be a lot more nondescript. Not bad my friend!
And if you don't mind me asking, what kind of pay are you looking at for this gig? Because I would absolutely love to do something like that.

Damn, 1000 a month is a lot better than anything I ever made leading trips.
I got $118 a week last time I went. (and a free canoe trip)
Boy scouts have definitely changed in just the last ten years.
Good to see they're doing the whole leave no trace thing now.

That's all I've ever known in scouts, did it used to be different? Wild kids running around ruining all the sites for everyone else? I can actually see that, if it weren't for us older kids supervising those little shits they would have done some serious damage. hahaha.Quote:

What kind of things will you be doing? The boreal forests and northern hardwood forests will be a big change from the NC mountains - you will love it.
I'm going to be taking clients on canoeing expeditions for 7-10 days at a time through the Boy Scouts of America. I'll live on their base which is on Moose Lake just a short drive from Ely. I did a 10 day expedition back in 07' and have wanted to go back ever since.
fuck you man. fuck you.

I have a degree in Outdoor Experiential Education, but that's not a requirement. All that is required is that the guide must have been involved in scouting up to the rank of Life, must be certified in Wilderness First Aid or higher. I have my Wilderness First Responder+EMT (WEMT) There's also a few online certs that have to be completed for the BSA. For someone wanting to work on the boundary waters for a private charter I would think the only cet would be Wilderness First Responder.

im 21 and feel i have already wasted way too much time... my wife and i plan on homesteading in NorCal soon. i love the midwest (MN, WI etc.), but they dont have medical marijuana... fuck that. i love fly fishing and hunting, but i love smoking + fly fishing or hunting more.
how'd you get the job anyhow? i figured you'd have to be friends or family or a world renown hunter/fisherman to get a job with any outfitters...

21 is young man. you're younger than me. Then again i'm not married I'm sure that takes up a good portion of your time. I got the job probably because of my qualifications and the fact that I am an Eagle Scout with some experience on the waters. I also had good references. After this summer i'm hoping to go to a private outfitter since i'll have real experience by then.

Very nice Guru. I'm majoring in environmental studies come September now, transferring to a 4 year from community. I've never even heard of that degree you have to be honest, but it does sound cooler than mine hahaha

It's only been a major at Appalachian State for 2 years. Before that it was known as "leisure studies" under the category of Health, Leisure, and Exercise Science. I'm so glad I found that major though. I can't imagine how drab my existence would be now If i'd stuck with sociology as a major.

Ok bro, this may not be a popular post but it needs to be said. If you are working, leave the edibles at home. Save them for personal trips when you are not responsible for anyone. Working as a guide means having the lives of other people in your hands. If you are taking that seriously you will not last long at this job. Your first priority is the safety and well being of the kids under your charge. If shit hits the fan you need to be able to deal with it in as clear headed of a state as possible.
I'm not judging you for using, but be professional and keep it to appropriate times. When you are guiding you are working at it's not an appropriate time. Coming from someone who has worked as a canoe guide and BWCA guide, if you are doing your job right you won't have time to be stoned.
The BWCA is a cool enough place to be without have to be stoned. Be responsible, be an adult and leave it at home.

Ah very cool. The new name for it definitely sounds a lot better too! hahaha. And yeah, I was thinking a sociology major too, or anthropology. But I didn't really see any job future in anthropology. I think I'll have a reasonable amount of job prospects with this major/field.
