Could be.

It does look slightly darker and more purple than I would expect for Agrocybe.

Maybe closer to Leratiomyces percevalii.

It could also be a Stropharia species.

Thanks Alan.  I think you might be correct with the Leratiomyces percevalii.  I looked at pictures and some do look like the ones I found.

I went out again today to find nothing BTW.

Either they don't grow in this particular creek I am looking in or my hunting skills are lacking.  Could pollution be a hinderence (i.e. being in a city)?

Does anyone have a sure fire way of finding them?

To those who have found them......care to spare an extra print for research if I can't find any?

Did i find maryland Ovoids?

Habitat: 20-30ft away from stream/river, growing at base of a sycamore/sandy, muddy, soil/

Cap: Brown-tan when mature/patchy brown and tan/smooth

Gills: Cinnamon brown/attached/crowded/ Appear to have a pinkish purple tint from spores

Stem: Hollow / whitish / fragile

Brusing: none noticed

Spore print: Waiting

White balance was off soo the color isnt the greatest.

All help is highly appreciated.

Those don't look like Ovoids to me. It is best to keep the season thread clear of ID requests, make a new thread for that. Not trying to be a jerk.

Here are a few photos I took last night as the light was dying. I hit this spot maybe 5 days ago with my bud so I didn't expect much, just wanted to pick up some pins we left. As always it's just great looking for them, great passtime, being out in nature, getting exercise, you can't lose!

Kinda proud of this one, a little artsy, even though I didn't mean to be.

It was too late for these poor little gentlemen.

And Koods, your comment about sand is right on the money, they love sandy areas. This has been stated before, but for some reason it is not as popular a tip as "knotweed" or "flooding" (but actually the sand and flooding go hand in hand). If any new guys want some very good info, I suggest you look in the past years Official Ovoid threads, starting in 07 (even though I think that one is called the official bluefoot thread). Particularly pay attention to any post by ShroomyDan, his posts definitely steered me in the right direction.

Pardon my ignorance, but what would happen if you did?  Why is it bad to have different species in the same bag?  The ovoids couldn't become poisonous just by touching a galerina could they?  Please enlighten me.

I'm not arguing with the experts.  Didn't think they were active because of the non-bruising.

Oh well....back to the streams.

Look at the color of the stipes of those compared to the pics of the known ovoids. One of the giveaways is that ovoids don't have uniform color pigmentation of the stipe.

Stem butts covered in mycelium are the way to go for starting cultivated patches, just keep the mycelium wrapped in something moist during transport. You can shred the used bags in a blender and then pour it over new wild habitats. Also save the water used to rinse them off and carry it around to bless mulch piles. The power company has been leaving a lot of fresh chips behind as they cut back overgrowth around utility lines.

Any shrooms that are fresh should be printed overnight, they'll even print in the fridge for longer periods if they are kept moist. Removing them from the environment before they can drop a lot of spores reduces chances for new growth. It's easy to rinse the prints off foil into a bowl, then funnel that into a spray bottle. You'll be able to get them to good habitat better than they would by chance.

I love hunting ovoids in the ohio river valley but dont live close to it so I dont make the trip that often... I really just hunt them for the fun of finding psychedelic mushrooms in my home state when for years I thought the idea was dumb... IME P.E. are extremely more potent than any ovoid Ive ever eaten, anyone else have this exprience... I mean the potency is greater than most cubes but far less than the PE Ive grown...

Plus wanted to add this to my threads to follow and maybe post a pic or two when Im brave enough..

Here is where they were found.

Do these areas look promising?

Thanks all.

A few questions on hunting:

Are they easy to spot or do you have to dig around?

Those aren't ovoids. Alan knows best. They sorta look like the things that grow in the grass around here, although I havent seen them yet this year. The area you are searching looks a little too woody for these early ovoids, which are growing in very open areas. That sandbar there in your picture isn't built up enough to start growing short vegetation... That is what you are looking for, to be honest, that stream looks a little too small to target your searches.

Macmerdin, as for digging around... Some of them have been right out in the open, but the larger flushes are growing in areas that have grasses and weeds that are about the same density of a lawn that hasn't been mowed in a couple weeks. I use a smooth stick that doesn't catch the vegetation, but can push it aside, as I scan underneath. Just do that in a back and forth motion as you walk forward. When you find one, lose the stick and get down on your hands and knees are really look around and chances are you'll find a lot more. More often than not, they are arranged n a linear fashion along an unseen piece of wood.

No, I just mean if you throw something questionable I your bag of ovoids you have to be extra careful to fish it out. And while potential poisons aren't going to ruin the good stuff, the bluing reaction could rub off onto a nonbluing  mushroom and make it appear to be bluing as well.

I keep stem butts for making new patches... I'm not asking to compare methods of creating new patches, nor am I that interested in systematically making spore prints. I just want to know what to do with these incidental spore prints on the bag and on the paper towels in my desecator. Can I just place Them in the right environment or do I have to work them up in some special way?

Thanks Koods.

I am totally frustrated right now.  I spent most of the day today searching streams, creeks and rivers.  Nothing.

I've searched sand bars.  i've searched sand bars elevated with small vegetation.  Nothing.

I've searched flood plains.  Nothing.

At this point I'm ready to give up.

No offense to the person who posted to read the previous years threads for info, I'd rather spend my time hunting at this point, so if someone could direct me to that sweet spot, I'd appreciate it.

BTW.  I don't know anyone who hunts, so finding someone with more experience is impossible.

Hope I didn't offend anyone but I am totally frustrated when someone says they look for about 5 minutes and find them and I spend hours, hike miles, stove my finger and find nothing.

Redefine success by looking for all mushrooms, not just psilocybin containing species.  Collect the edible ones for dinner and collect the poisonous ones to show to your friends.

Maybe you should drive to a place where they actually exist.

I've only found the ones I posted above so far.  And a few Agrocybes but that is it.  As far as I'm aware, there aren't edibles that grow where ovoids do?

Any idea how to find one?  Good idea though.

BTW...why is it so hard to get a print from someone when they are legal?  I've asked quite a few people in this thread alone.

But, yet people are talking about picking them and starting spawn which is totally illegal?

Just search on google for mycologist society in your general area. (example: Seattle area mycology society) You will probably find something, or get an idea of the direction to look. They are pretty common in areas where fungi are prevalent
