Dawson Forest. Georgia's Area 51
    #15991802 - 03/25/12 12:03 AM (1 year, 1 month ago)

Hey everyone. I thought this would be kinda neat to share with everyone seeing as this is the weirdest place I have ever been.

I live in north Georgia. But Im not a country redneck. I was actually the first of my family born here. The rest of my family is from Chicago. Not many interesting things in Georgia. Except Atlanta. But I was scouting out a great camp ground for a camping trip Im going to take next week for my first shroom trip. So I was online Googleing free camp sites and one of them said "Dawson Forest". It was about an hour from where I lived so I was up for a drive. Well today I got the chance to drive up there and see what its all about and let me tell you its nothing like I ever seen.

(I didn't know this until I got there)
Dawson Forest is an old abandon nuclear test facility. It was shut down in 1971. But it was started during the cold war. The place was dedicated to trying to create a nuclear aircraft (UFO much?) and.... (This creeped me out) Experimenting on wildlife and its reactions to nuclear warfare and radiation. Almost every document about what went on there is HIGHLY classified.

So once I drove into the visitor information grounds it was beautiful. I liked it. But Im to curious and open minded to just drive up, grab a trail map and move on. I got out and looked around. Hunting season is over so I was alone. Once I got out first thing I notice was in the distances a barb wire fence. It was bout 100 feet from my truck. I walked up to it and the first thing I see is concrete bunkers. Then I walk along the fence for a long while until it turned right and then I kept following it. As I walked I looked into the dense forest to see a clearing, within that was a massive concrete building. It was about 4 to 5 stories tall but absolutely no windows... just one rusty door. Kinda creepy. I observed more to see this building is double fenced. I walked back to my truck feeling weird... Just kinda like... "Wtf is this place..." I wasn't scared, but more... fascinated. I drove out of the visitor area and took the gravel road deeper into the forest.

(Where it gets beyond weird)
I drive until the road stops. In front of me sits another concrete building... way smaller though and it merged with the ground. This is a tunnel that went under ground to god knows where. But it was caved in and destroyed (purposely). So I get out and walk around it. Then behind the tunnel is more forest and I see a small concrete wall about 50+ feet back. It was about 6 feet tall and 8 feet long. I walk up to it, and behind it to find it was a wall to one of the buildings and I was now on one of the foundations. Mother nature has done a great job of reclaiming the place I must say. Okay so I can not stress enough that there is no more road. The trails have gotten as narrow as shoulder length. After that wall about 70 feet back I see another wall. This one FAR more greater then that one. About 12 feet high. I walk up to it and  see its about 60 feet long. A small tree was growing beside it and I climb it up to the top of the wall... To my amazement I look down to a 30 foot drop. Then then... the weirdest part to me.
A corn field... with ABSOLUTELY not earthly business being there. Your probably asking "Well whats the prob? Its just a corn field." Well here the problem. If your going to harvest corn (especially how big this field was) you going to need to get harvester out there but THERE IS NO ROAD! It confined by dense forest. And there are HUGE car sized boulders in the middle of the field (wtf?!) and the corn is planted in nice rows. On top of all of that the entire field was scorched black from fire. The trees where black, the outer side of the wall I was on is black. It was all burned at one point.

So I went home to find out parts of the forest are still contaminated with radiation. (great...) and some people think that the old reactor was buried in that "field" and the corn was to make it look natural.

It gives me the creeps but I still think its cool as hell. Idk if I still wanna do shrooms here but I know something happened there and they dont want anyone finding out where things are or what things are.\
Just a little story for everyone. Hope you enjoyed.

Sorry if its hard to read. Im kinda stoned right now.

:confused2: A cornfield?? Seems like the last crop you would want out there. Corn requires a decent amount of nutrients to grow, as well as lots of water. Hmmm

be careful up in that area, there's a lot of old copper mines, many are
flooded and sinkholes are developing, I've explored in many of the old
mines up that way

much of what you describe isnt unusual, large rocks are everywhere, large
piles of slag and dirt are as well from mining operations which is a part
of why the dominant tree in that area is the pines. the burned areas are
a part of normal forestry, you burn back underbrush so the trees and other
plants can flourish in addition to making it easier for your camping and
hiking pleasures

I've not been to that site yet, if you decide to go up there and do some
exploring then please head this advice, take a hard hat for each person,
each person needs 3 flashlights, a 6v lantern and a couple of emergency
back up lights for each person and take about 100' of half inch or larger
rope just in case it's needed. take a few ziplock bags to keep a camera in,
small preferably, at least one bottle of water for getting crud off your
hands before handling the camera in case you encounter mud. take loads of
pics and park at least a mile away from the location and hike in.

Subb'd for photos. I wonder how the radiation levels are there?

also get to identical stopwatchs, start them both when you leave the car, and leave one with the car. Check to ensure they both indicate the same time lapse on your return.

That is in case of time travel. You never know.

The radiation is fine in most parts. But I read that some areas are still hazardous. I will make sure to pictures for everyone. It is a very interesting place.

Concrete is an excellent container to put nuclear waste in.

sometimes, concrete that's used to contain radiation also contains lead in the mix

Precisely. And that is also the best reason _not_ to try and explore the insides of those buildings. You probably won't find much of interest anyway. And the stuff you may find, may have been left there because it's mildly contaminated.

I strongly doubt there has ever been a nuclear reactor at that site. As I understand, the site was used for irradiation testing. You don't need a reactor for that, and the infrastructure and operating procedures of a reactor would be way too costly if you only wanted to perform irradiation tests. The only nuclear air craft reactors ever built are on display at Idaho National Laboratory:

Is it possible that your corn field is a means of bio-remediation, e.g. by having the corn extract radioactive elements from the testing grounds so that they can conveniently be 'harvested' and removed from the site at the end of the season? Like outlined in this IAEA report on page 28, for example: http://www-pub.iaea.org/MTCD/publications/PDF/te_1086_prn.pdf

GA seems to have that secret Area 51 vibe to it.. you just have to look a little

I swear I have seen a triangular craft flying over one of the mountain ranges lateeee in the night, as well as the HPS colored orbs in the sky that hover in the middle of f'in nowhere like 500 feet up.. then shoot into the sky at unman-made speeds.

In the hills of northwest Georgia...

I'm from north Georgia too and I've never heard of this place. It seems extremely interesting. I'll definitely have to take a trip there sometime. I know you posted this almost a month ago, but do you have anymore pictures that you can post?
