Blazer, nice story, made me laugh. Xthrx, only 50? for most people that's pretty major I think :-)

Found these two wee fellas in my own back garden today. Growing straight out of the lawn. Pointy caps but don't really look like Psilocybe semilanceata. Any ideas? Maybe just subs from some unseen buried wood material? Location North Shore.

It's the same species as below.

Now this type ive never come across, they had longer thinner stalks, small dome shaped heads with a pointy nipple, all seemed to be growing on a lean due to the longer stalks and the gills were a lighter colour to subs i usually haul.

Sorry bout the blurry pics btw, bad camera haha.

Most had been getting fried by the sun so i couldnt tell what the natural colour was but as i was looking at the pins which were a bit more moist and they had a greyish/blue colour to the heads.

They had a softer texture and a distinctively different smell (i noticed as i was boiling some up lastnight).

Most actives i pick look like this most of the time
http://imgur.com/1IW6s
notice the difference in thickness and shape.

Was collected from a council woodchip garden which has just started cranking fungi as its 2yrs fresh so its the first time scoping this patch.

They could just be a variation of subs, but if theyre a different strain then il be stoked as all we get here in chch is subs but yea hope someone can help me out. I didnt get a spore print but next rain il get a habitat shot and print to give you id'ers a better chance. cheers :bigjoint:

It's an active Psilocybe species in Section Aztecorum/Semilanceatae, I first found it in a plant nursery in potted plants around 2005, it was first discovered in 1969 by G.M. Taylor in a sub-alpine herb field near the Frans Joseph Glacier in Westland.
It remains an undescribed species although someone has coined the illegitimate name P. "inskii" which is silly, I like P. "aureoalbescens" which in Latin means "gold, fading to white"

This species is becoming more and more common in wood chip landscaping and was most likely introduced into that habitat by the plant nurseries, it's also possible to find it fruiting from soil in grassy areas and in that habitat it looks quite similar to P. semilanceata, to me it seems that this species and many others belonging in Sect. Aztecorum, (P. aztecorum, P. baeocystis) are intermediate forms that bridge the true lignicolous species that generally belong in Sect. Cyanescens, (P. subaeruginosa, P. cyanescens and P. azurescens) with the true terricolous species like many of those found in Sect. Zapotecorum, Cordisporae and Sect. Mexicanae, therefore they are often found on wood or soil!

Here is an image showing typical fruit bodies found in a wood chipped area.

Inski,
They are using Glyphosate (Roundup) and no dye - you can't see it. They have done massive areas, and lots of patches have been hit. I can't find a damn thing on fungi uptake of glyphosate, or residual effect/life in fungi.

I know it wont hurt the fungi, but I'm concerned about the fungi hurting us.

Not good.

Thanks inski for the informative ID. It was surprising to see a Psilocybe in my own garden, let alone straight out of the lawn. You've made sense of it though, cheers.

Ok,

It is a very bad practice to not be using a dye with Glyphosate, these guys are presumably employed by the council or are employed by companies that are contracted by the council, it is also presumed that these guys doing the spraying have up to date Growsafe Certificates so they should know better, the use of agrichemicals in NZ is often done wrong and the old guys attitude that the chemicals are harmless and "nothing will ever get them" is very common:shrug:

I know Glyphosate is considered to be not so toxic but I don't trust that and recommend that if anyone suspects chemicals have been sprayed on or near fungi not to consume them regardless of the edibility or possible medicinal properties.

Contractors - very well known company name, usually associated with construction and engineering starts with "Down" and ends with "ER"

Any idea on residual life in fungi / mycelium? I have tried all sorts of places.

Just don't consume fungi that you suspect to be contaminated with chemicals, there's no way to tell how the mushrooms uptake the chemicals without doing in depth studies but I can tell you that mushrooms are known to accumulate heavy metals, these can be very dangerous if consumed!!

TO THE CHCH HUNTERS: If youre the people that are going around to every bark garden in the city digging holes and destroying the areas etc can you stop it please, youre ruining it for everyone else.

Ive only been to 2 patches this year that havent been ruined to the extent where id consider not going back to these places, im not suggesting that its someone on this forum but im over these noobs permanantly fucking up patches just to get a few pins :facepalm3:.

Experienced shroomers here probably feel my frustration as well, so take note, look after the patches and theyll reward you.

Semilanceata ID Request [Re: xthrx]
    #16276958 - 05/24/12 06:40 AM (1 year, 27 days ago)

Greetings, this is my first post and hopefully my first successful Psilocybe find. After fruitlessly attempting to locate a patch of 'shrooms for weeks and weeks, today my friends and I finally harvested what we suspect are Semilanceata.

Habitat: Slightly mossy lawn (damp)
Gills: Adnexed (see photo)
Stem: Solid and thin, brown
Cap: Light tan/brown to dark brown, with an almost green tinge
Bruising: No observable bruising.
General location: Otago, NZ

Unfortunately the biggest of the bunch were pretty stuffed!
