Food Porn & Review: Gordon Ramsey @ The London West Hollywood
#15981153 - 03/22/12 02:43 PM (1 year, 2 months ago) |

|

Hit up the Gordon Ramsey restaurant at the London Hotel in West Hollywood last night. Had 2 x 5 course tasting + a bottle of wine, as follows...
Kingfish Sashimi, Foie Gras, Mushrooms & Radish
Snow Crab Salad Rolls with Grapefruit supremes & Avocado
Gnocchi with Mushrooms & Veggies
Lobster & Veal Sweetbreads with Mushroom Cream & Roasted Red Pepper Sauce
Stuffed Turbot and Lobster w/ Clams
Lamb Loin with Duck? Sausage and Couscous
Bone Marrow Toast!
Cheeses 2x cow 1x goat Honeycomb, almonds, pear
Chocolate Souffle

Apple Tart

Petit Fours

A li'l local West Hollywood flavor from the walk..

All in all, the experience was well enjoyed and I have no regrets. However, I did not find the meal remarkable, as there were a few issues including the foie gras on the kingfish plate being cut so thin that the level of sear employed took away much of its richness and tasted almost burnt. One of the clams on the turbot dish had some rocky sand in it. One corner of the lamb loin was slightly overcooked, not by much and not that big a deal; and the level of lobster doneness on the turbot plate was not as tender as the lobster that was served with the sweetbreads.
The only courses that really jumped out throughout the evening were the Snow Crab Salad Rolls and the Bone Marrow Toast, both of which were phenomenal. The Lobster and Veal Sweetbreads and desserts were quite good and came in an easy second. The rest of the meal was acceptable, but not very inspiring given the level of prestige the Ramsey name carries, not to mention the heavy price tag. Service was barely adequate, though we were one of the first tables seated that day, so perhaps they just weren't in the flow yet. I scored a promotion on this meal, which included a bottle of wine, bringing the final cost after tax and tip to $210, roughly $120 less than the menu price.

Looks good. But I think your observations on the meal say it all.
You're not alone in your overall opinion of that place, it seems like alot of food critics/writers/bloggers leave that place disappointed. The food still looks really great and I'm sure the experience as a whole was enjoyable.
If anything, you got the consolation of sufficing your curiosity about a man whose shows we watch a ton of.
Next time I'm home we should definitely hit up a nice place like this though. Although droppin a hundy per person is something we wont have to do.

Forgot the Apple Tart (since added to above post). It was the better of the two desserts in my opinion, but that's probably just 'cause I like apples more than I like chocolate.

I'm sorry but rocky sand in my clams is absolutely unacceptable for this level of cooking and for what they are charging. Isn't this somehting Ramsay would crucify a cook for on one of his shows?
and yes, I find that most places cut their foie way to thin. The way we did it at Citronelle in DC was to cut it literally a half inch think, deep fry it in clarified butter until very nicely browned and then finish the middle in the microwave (yes a microwave) until the middle was just quivering.

Yeah, that's pretty much the same thought that was going through my head as I heard the big "crunch" and surprised expression emanating from my friend's face when she bit into it. I have to wonder if Ramsey ever steps foot in that restaurant? It almost feels like he might have just showed up for the opening to slap his name on the joint, never bothering to come back to ensure that a high standard is being upheld. Seems like this place might just be strictly business and lacking the buzzing effect of the passionate drive that inspires an up and coming chef.
A quick note on service...
While our primary server was quite congenial, the overall service was lacking. When we were first seated, I immediately explained that we were there for the tasting promotion, yet the server just handed us menus that didn't seem to indicate any order or explanation as to which sections of the menu we should be picking from and in what quantity. The sommelier seemed annoyed and hurried while explaining the wines he had available, despite the fact that the restaurant was scarcely one quarter full. Further, the red wine we received was downright refrigerated, taking until we had finished the majority of our first glasses for it to come up to temp. Then he actually tried to tell us that it's a good thing to enjoy red wine that way, since (and I'm paraphrasing here, but this was the message that came across) you'll appreciate it more if you've had your first glass chilled and come back for another that is up to temp. I don't think I kept a straight face at that point.
Later in the meal, we clearly expressed our love of their table bread, so much as to request to purchase a loaf to go, which was denied due to a "shortage" because their daily delivery didn't come in. I can live with that, but not more than a few minutes later, somehow the basket of bread on the table which contained our last two pieces was whisked away from us! I literally speed walked to the kitchen entrance in hopes to catch it before they threw it out. Instead of simply bringing back the stolen bread, they ended up cutting four fresh slices for us to pack home. While I no doubt appreciate getting the extra bread, it just seemed rather haphazard after we had explicitly made note of how much we loved the bread and wanted more in the first place, for them to then take it away.
So yeah, in so far as this "caliber" of restaurant is concerned, it was a bit of a let down. The food was good, and there were some shining stars including the Snow Crab Salad Rolls (starter), Bone Marrow Toast (side order), the Lobster & Sweetbreads (main) and the desserts. The rest of the dishes just fell flat. Not that they were bad, but neither inspiring nor exciting.
Shoot, I had a $6 tostada from the local Mexican joint today that I enjoyed quite a bit more than several of the dishes at Ramsey's.

Dude when I come home in a month, we should hit up a good place or two.
I have a couple things in mind that would make for very nice meals, and probably cost half as much per person.
I really want to go back to Animal.

No doubt. I be hittin' up good places left and right. Just don't take pictuars at most of 'em. I'm always snagging promotional vouchers from the various collective buying power sites (Groupon, Bloomspot, Goldstar, LivingSocial, etc). I have the following restaurants lined up to be trying soon:- Mosto Enoteca (near boardwalk in Santa Monica for a nice treat after hitting the bike path)
- Whist (Top Chef related + near boardwalk in Santa Monica)
- The Gorbals (another Top Chef related meat-centric joint downtown, known for serving a full pig's head)
I also recently tried Susan Feniger's Street, which was decent, sporting a lively casual outdoor patio atmosphere, food with some funk and flair, but service was quite slow (the place was packed) and the portions were rather anemic. The bottomless champagne mixers with flavors like lychee and blackberry lemon twist made for a good time.

I'd definitely be down to go back to The Gorbals. I loved that place, and everything was reasonably priced. You can get a good appetizer and entree for like $20-$25 total.
I also really wanna hit up Animal again. That place was fuckin booomb.
I had bacon-wrapped mozza balls...which were soooo good. And grilled beef tongue. Also super yum.

Cool! Thanks for posting this Geo. This confirms what I think of Gordon Ramsay.
I have the entire UK set of Kitchen Nightmares, before he was anything popular here in the US. He goes around rips people for what they do, the dishes they use and how they present their dinner. Calling people pretentious.
It looks to me like he did all this to eliminate competition. His restaurants are doing exactly what he told people not to do. In essence, keeping people from mimicking his ideas and nonchalantly walking off with theirs. The mans a fraud but a very good business man and self promoter and that's it.
I will never set foot in this mans franchise of eatery's for this reason.
He might be a chef but a thief seems more fitting to me.

His mentor was a far better man.
Marco Pierre White was super harsh on Gordon, and kind of turned Gordon into the monster he is now.

Interesting. While I do not subscribe to the vast majority of Ramsey shows - often finding him to be way too over the top sensationalist to the point of buffoonery - I do respect his Kitchen Nightmares program, especially the UK version. As someone who has toyed with the idea of opening my own restaurant (now evolving into thoughts of a brew pub), I have found the Kitchen Nightmares series very useful in helping to point out some of the common areas where problems occur in restaurant management.
I also think that in that show's context, Ramsey's garish and aggressive attitude is a positive influence in helping some of these hopeless restauranteurs to understand where they are going wrong... a little bit of tough love, if you will. The show has a much greater deal of authenticity about it than any of his other programs, in my opinion, and I value it for that very reason. It's no easy task to attempt to turn around heavily indebted lifeless restaurants full of stressed out owners on edge, in only a week or two's time. I was consistently surprised at how well he handled some very difficult situations on that program.
That said, his behavior does not track so well for me when it comes to ANY of his other competition cooking shows. In fact, it's downright discouraging at best, insulting at its worst, and generally stupid in between. I mean seriously, how many times do you have to feign vomiting on camera? I would be exceptionally surprised if he has ever actually vomited in response to a dish he did not care for off camera... people just don't do that! Spit out the food into a napkin, sure. But to grab a trash can and hunch yourself over? Puhleeeeeze....

Hahaha yeah that's the funny part.
He'll keel over like he's vomiting, but then he just spits out what he's been chewing on and makes a gagging noise lol.
He needs to learn from Steve-O on how to self induce vomit.

I like the first season of the UK show. He's actually pretty personable and nice in it, and seems to care about the people involved. The show is also filmed in a more interesting way, its really a good show around that time. I watch the new ones but it takes me 10 minutes to get through it now.
The show has the same few acts every time now, generic restaurant thats shitty, cue to the poor pantry and shitty cooks, cue to the crazy owner, cue to the owner make amends, cue to the new food and blah. I watch when ramsey first eats the shitty food, then when he comes up with a new menu and Im out.

There are certain aspects of the show I really enjoy. Like when he inspires these burned out chefs to cook from their hearts and heritage. Like in the Curry Lounge episode. The Indian chef is talented but tired of making the crap curries. Gordon asks him to make food that his mother used to make and the chef makes a crazy good lamb korma.
