I can't understand religious people. They are like aliens to me

I met this girl. Really great, really nice, smart, normal, funny and happy. She's Jewish.
One day I asked her what her theological views were, expecting her to say that she liked the culture of judaism but didn't take the "fairytale" stuff seriously. Instead I got a vague answer where she basically implied that she believed creationism and stuff, at least on some level.
This horrified me. How could a free thinking individual actually believe something which has absolutely no evidence behind it except some scroll? It just defies logic and reason, and I can't see her the same way.
I know I'm overreacting, but it's just so foreign to me. I don't have a single friend who believes that shit, and have only known 1 or 2 people in my entire life who were religious to the point where I knew about it.
It just doesn't make sense to me

Im with ya man. Both my parents were raised in hard core religious families and neither of them ever went to church again after they moved out. My mom went to school with nuns that would beat the kids and my dad was forced to give sermons at his church when he was only 8. At least they didn't come out of it totally brain washed
Im at LSU now and we have a thing we call "Go to Hell Tuesday". Snake handlers and other crazy religious folk gather in the free speech alley in front of the student union and the stuff they spout is just unbelievable. They even have their brainwashed kids wearing signs next to them while they scream at every student who walks by.
Google Brother Jed, all this guy does is travel around to colleges and do this (check images to see the sweet staff he carries)

I don't think you're overreacting. You would be wary of someone if they told you they still honestly believe in santa claus, wouldn't you?

Believing in god is schizophrenia because you believe something you're imagining exists

You know, I don't believe for a second that anyone who claims to believe in fairytale religion actually believes it. Not deep down. I don't know, I just can't believe the majority of people are that retarded. That would scare the living shit out of me. I think it's just some kind of charade, an excuse for shared culture and basis for life principles. Of course they need to claim to believe it in order to make the culture work. They might even fool themselves, but some part of their minds must realize it is ridiculous.

Yes, I want to believe this to be true also. It's....difficult to imagine a world being this populated with IDiots/creationists. They can't all possibly believe some of that stuff. Wow. Dinosaur fossils were carefully strewn about our planet to test our faith? Come on, nobody can believe that.

I believe that some christians truely believe what they say. That being said, I would say most of them are "just in case" christians. The ones that go out partying Saturday night and repent Sunday Morning. However, other religions are fanatical. Even the least extreme muslim still could turn into a radical at the drop of a hat. All it takes is one mispoken word about Muhammad or a drawing they find offensive. The world would be better off without religion, that is for sure.

You're thinking about it the wrong way. I could just as easily be horrified at your use of the word "I", implying that you believe yourself to be an autonomous free agent, some kind of homunculus living in your pineal gland. The idea is absurd to me, there's no evidence for such a thing except in some dictionary. How could a literate person actually believe they represent anything more than a collection of arbitrarily conserved but essentially undifferentiated electric impulses?
I can't understand people, they are like aliens to me.

Hope that helps, I didn't mean it to be a flame but to illustrate that religious people are not as different from you as you think they are.

How is the conservation of electrical impulses (read "experience") arbitrary? Memory is built on anything but arbitrariness. It is how deeply something hooks into your mind, relates to existing patterns hardwired into your psyche and biology that determines how well you retain it. Memory techniques exploit the fact that if you can turn a seemingly arbitrary sting of letters or characters into a sexual symbol, you can easily remember it. So "I" is not anything like believing that you need to cleanse aliens from a distant planet out of your body to heal your psyche. "I" is your most stable, least ephemeral tendencies, reactions, behavior, modes of perception...

It's arbitrarily conserved. There is no purpose or meaning to the conservation of the electrical impulses you call your mind. It's powered by entropy. You're kidding yourself if you think "you" are independent and autonomous; you're nothing but energy condensed to a slow vibration, as paraphrased from Bill Hicks, and the essential distinction between your ass and the chair that cushions is purely academic.

"You" are a product of circumstance. The language you use is what's been made accessible to you by forces beyond your control and larger than your comprehension. You seem to be very comfortable expressing yourself this way, and I do not fault you for it. However, I do have a point to make here about the nature of belief, and I hope it's not getting lost in personal considerations.

Religion is a crutch of the weak. People lean on it because their lives are not fulfilling enough alone.
