Straw Basket

Saw this idea in a magazine as an herb ball, something you put plants in. I decided to put mushrooms in it. Layers of straw and spawn to the top then mash the two halves together. The one step i left out is to take some cardboard and wire it over the two halves so they are contained and then put it together-i was doing this for shits and giggles, not for perfection or anything.

I love it!
Will you cover it with anything to help maintain moisture?
Good luck,

Agreed. I'd wrap it up in a trash bag and put in a cool, shady spot until full colonization. RR

No not really, i wanted to see how it does on its own. It stays nice and humid down south, but it hasn't quite gotten that warm yet, so just watering it everday-ill wrap the next one. Here are some pictures of it fruiting today about a week after making it-they are supposed to be pink so it shows that the moisture is down.

They look really good to me! Alot of the local oyeters here are very light like that too. Great Idea. I like how you used the big ass Mt. Olive jar for spawn. hahaha. cool.
How long was it from when you made up the basket to when they started fruiting?

So would I-all different species going off year round. They get pretty heavy though, especially when wet. I bent the rod it is hanging on backwards a little bit for some extra support. Other than that the chains these baskets come with are not that strong, it fell from the first spot in my greenhouse i tried. Here are some pictures of it today.

This is such a cool idea. I did the same thing, only with using half (one planter). Set a heavy weight on top, then bagged it and letting it colonize before setting it outside. Also, it keeps freezing outside so a few weeks of colonization should make temperatures about right (I hope). Thanks for the inspiration!!
