monitor believe it or not is the last thing that loads, that is after post. Post tests the system, you hear a beep, well with a desktop you do. Then a laptop does the same process either way, post happens. Then basic input output system loads. The first thing the board looks for is if input output for all devices cache memory to the processor. So your ram will be cached at least a few kilobytes of memory. Now if your post is working, all devices load the audio, network, monitor and then the boot device mounts the file system. So no the monitor is not the last thing that loads, but once the OS loads there is a display adapter driver that loads.
Now what you are saying is you think the processor or bios or psu or all is over clocking, and the thing starts going crazy when it loads, but the screen doesn't turn on. It is so doubtleful it is the screen. If you could get into the bios, you could run a memory test. But you say you already tested the hd and ram? Dude the thing is over clocked and is over heating. The bios is probably not loading out of fail safe. My only guess otherwise the thing would go through full bios load, look for the boot device, load the OS, then boot up, then probably blue screen, or just completely fry and never turn on again.
If you had a desk top you could buy another processor and power supply that works for your pin connector and socket, test them and see if the mobo is good. First of all this is entirely uneconomic and is a waste of money, second of all taking apart a laptop is painful and really imho is a waste of time since everything is soldered to the lap top board. Putting it in the freezer isn't going to help cool the machine. The machine doesn't want to turn on because the bios is probably understanding an i/o over clocking error, or it won't work because a multiplier factor isn't working and a pc generally doesn't turn off if it overheats, especially not within the first 10 seconds of bios load. Very sorry dude this scenario is worst then a virus it's not possible to fix the drive, not possible to remove the files and reformat and pay for windows activation, none of it.
Well that last part I lied, remove the drive, get a usb transfer device, connect to another pc, let the sata drive spin up, and be mounted, and if it's windows the pc will see the drive as :f or some garbage like that. Copy and paste remove all your files. My guess is you did what I'm explaining last week. Sorry about your investment going bad, machines are painful to the person using the machine when the machine breaks. I trust a washing machine dude they are so easy to fix wish computers were the same way.
one last thing, try removing the wireless adapter and trying turning it on, I've seen this prevent a laptop from turning on. But now we are talking about it turning on, and over powering, chance that the wireless adapter is effecting anything = 0.00001%

I got the data off the hard drive no problems. I already took the wireless card out because it was easy to get to.
I am not to worried about ever fixing it. I already told the owner is dead.

I just read that the machine might have went into hibernate mode during the windows update, which might be the problem. I wonder if the machine has a factory reset button...

did you not say you removed and then replaced the cmos battery? That should do a factory reset. If you didn't remove it for that purpose why on earth did you remove it?

I thought maybe there might be a small pin sized button or something.

Even if it went into hibernate during update, the machine should still boot into the CMOS setup.

One of my computers just got fucked by this too, when I restarted it, it would get stuck on the configuring updates screen - I'm just now finishing reinstalling the operating system.
God that tucking pissed me off, I'm turning updates off completely from this point forward.
