Did any cool shit happen between 1500-1800?

So I have to do an essay and presentation for this History of Western Civilization class. This is one of my least favorite classes that I've ever taken. All we're learning about is these fuckers constantly going ape shit and killing each other and trying to behead fat fucks so they can get in to power and start abusing it.
The cool thing is that the options seem pretty open, so I can do it on just about anything/anyone who lived at that time period, an invention, idea, whatever... Anyone have any good ideas to help a brother out? I'd like to do something on an awesome thinker, something psychedelic related would be cool too, if possible. Thought of maybe the ergotism that was causing crazy shit to happen but I don't know about that... The Elusinian Mysteries would be dope, but that is ancient Greece, wrong time period/location so I'm basically fucking stumped.
Just looking for any cool suggestions, you guys come up with some cool stuff on occasion.

There are more people imprisoned for the commission of drug offenses in the United States - close to 500,000 - than are incarcerated in England, France, Germany, and Japan for all crimes combined. Examined in another way, the United States has 100,000 more people incarcerated for nonviolent drug offenses than all the countries of the European Union combined, despite the fact that the European Union has 100 million more citizens.

IIRC, those were exciting times. They saw the beginnings of true science amongst other things. There's tons of stuff to write about.

Yeah man, totally agree. Professor asked for my topic and I said "Um... I don't know, something from the Enlightenment time period..? I'll get back to you."
I agree, that is definitely the coolest time. Just figured there is some awesome thing that took place that I'm not aware of that would be interesting to research and do the paper on. I know I have a couple Terence McKenna talks where he gets into this age and discusses some interesting "little known" type stuff that went down. Maybe I'll listen to those tonight while I fall asleep and hope I catch something.

I dont know how much you are into music but........Music evolved a lot through that period especially from the 1500-1600. From Gregorian Chant to Classical music compositions within a period of 100-150 years is amazing.

I love music. It's probably my favorite thing in life, be it listening or playing it. I did take a class on this timeperiod's music before and I probably still have the book and info around. Not a bad idea...

Only a lot of the most important events in history.
Scientific revolution, industrial revolution, free market capitalism, countless wars, America "discovered," America first colonized by spanish, US founded, US independence, Native American Genocide, US constitution, US bill of rights, free speech, freedom of religion, right to bear arms, a bunch of states added to the US, founding of Canada, mexican independence, the list goes on and on.

Yeah, we had both of those classes too. I could only take the one and actually get credit for it though... It was pretty awesome.

Yes, but seeing as how I'm only doing a little presentation, not teaching the entire semester, pretty much everything you listed is broad as hell. And really I was just checking for a more obscure, more amazing idea. I'm well aware of everything you just listed. Thanks for doing so, still somewhat helpful I guess, but I didn't mean tell me the obvious ones. Was just checking on something more interesting and unusual than "American independence".

On the Origin of Species was published in 1859. That's pushing it. I think 1800 is the cutoff, although that is a damn good one.

Oh yea, pre-1800. My next thought would be Galileo and his escapade with the Pope.
