 help me think of the word I'm looking for

there is a girl in my psychology class that always has to stand up for the little guy. I've seen her take both sides in an argument before and she seems to be fueled solely by the thrill of arguing.
so my question is, what is the name for this type of person? not one that just likes to argue but one who always has to stick up for the little guy
here's an example of what I mean
we will get into a class discussion about homosexuality or let's say eating disorders. whenever one student makes any kind of comment, usually not malicious at all, she goes into ultimate defense mode like I just called her mother a slut, or like every gay man is her best friend and we just insulted him. so shroomery, what is the word for this behavior?

let me clarify a little because the answers are all a little broader than what I wanted (I appreciate the replies though!). if we are discussing something controversal that does not necessarily involve a group that is oppressed or discriminated against, she says nothing. so this I feel kind of rules out simply argumentative or devil's advocate. I know there is a perfect word or phrase out there somewhere
