CrimeTracker 15: Arena Man Arrested Over Hallucinogenic Mushrooms

Press Release from the Arena Police Department:
On Friday, March 9, 2012 at approximately 10:35am, Officers from the Arena Police Department, Arena Police Department K-9 Unit and members of the Iowa/Grant Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at 374 Oak Street in the Village of Arena. During the course of the investigation, Officers discovered an elaborate setup designed for growing psilocybin mushrooms as well as nearly a pound of psilocybin mushrooms with an estimated street value of more than $4,000.
Besides psilocybin mushrooms, police seized a large amount of equipment used for the manufacturing of the mushrooms, along with other illegal drugs and drug related paraphernalia.
The resident, Dustin J. Thomas, 29 years old, was arrested at the scene for manufacturing psilocybin mushrooms and possession with intent to deliver psilocybin mushrooms. Thomas remains in the Iowa County Jail pending a bond hearing. Officers said more charges are expected as the investigation continues.
Psilocybin mushrooms are a hallucinogenic substance and under the Controlled Substance Act, is a Schedule I drug. Schedule I drugs, which include heroin and LSD, have a high potential for abuse and serve no legitimate medical purpose in the United States. The psychological consequences of psilocybin use include hallucinations and the inability to discern fantasy from reality. Panic reactions and psychosis also may occur, particularly if a user ingests a large dose.
Officer Stroik, K-9 Handler for the Arena Police Department, says that the investigation is still ongoing . Officers expect more changes to be filed with the Iowa County District Attorney's Office.

I hate seeing people get busted for growing mushrooms simply for the fact that each grow op bust increases (potentially at least) the odds that more states will start to ban the sale of online spores.

They bash mushrooms so hard or try too just because they natruely help and heal people and the government can't control it. It's a fucking medicine.

Maybe they think it's like marijuana only 2-4 times stronger, so it costs 2-4 times more. =P I'm guessing they don't see a lot of the mushroom plant grows in Iowa.
I think it would be a neat idea if people started calling psychedelics anti-hallucinogens. Because you can certainly have a psychedelic effect with very low, non-hallucinatory doses. And they get rid of cultural/social/personal hallucinations.

I was being sarcastic with the mushroom plant thing. There was a cop that called them that before. And I'm not the first to call psychedelics anti-hallucinogenic. I got it from Jonathan Ott.

I know this is said a lot, but it's rarely taken to heart: the reason the police was serving a warrant was because this guy told someone about his grow and word got around.
If life has taught me anything it's that people do not keep secrets. They'll go by the example YOU set by telling them and asking they keep it to themselves. Then they'll tell their friend and ask they keep it to themselves too. And so on until the police gets wind of it.
I know it's hard not to show off your grow, but ask yourself if showing off is worth spending years in prison with a big hairy guy named Tiny as your cell mate. And believe me, mushrooms are prosecuted more harshly than child molestation. Even if you have no priors, you'll probably get quality time with Tiny.
