 how much pure alcohol do you get off of 5 gallons of mash ?

hi all. I'm very excited that I'm gonna start making my own Alcohol soon. I've done some research and am pretty decent in the chemistry field. this seems like a very easy protect to accomplish. I'm planning on using an Ozarka jug to ferment my mash in. just curious if anyone can give an approximation of how much alcohol i can expect off a given amount of mash. I'm starting with around 5gallons. thanks

Well it depends on what you put into the mash especially on the concentration of fermentable sugars in the mash.
I'd recommend a mash with no more sugar than for a potential ABV of 14%. Personally I stick to 5-7% ABV. A chart like this is helpful: hxxp://www.brsquared.org/wine/CalcInfo/HydSugAl.htm.
Do you have a recipe in mind? If not I'd suggest starting with something simple that you can't mess up.
In Tejas you should be able to find piloncillo very easily at Fiesta. 5-8 pounds (10-16 8 oz. cones) in 5 gallons of water works brilliantly. Heat ~3 gallons of water to a boil, add the cones, bring to a boil, stir, cover and let cool, and then transfer into a fermented and top up with distilled or reserve osmosis water. Pitch a single packet of rehydrated bakers yeast (look online how to rehydrate yeast properly) on top, fit an airlock, and wait. That fermentation should be finished in 2-3 weeks with the current ambient temperatures where you live. Oh this would technically be a "rum wash" if you care. Piloncillo is great because you don't need to add additional nutrients or balance pH like you would with a white sugar based wash. It's a little bit more expensive, but at 5 pounds/5 gallon wash it works out to ~7 a batch which isn't too bad.
If you do 5 lb/5 gallon then you could theoretically net ~1 L of 96% ethanol. With cuts and accounting for additional losses 1 L of consumable 40% ABV sounds reasonable.

you can use some tubo yeast if your going for high alcohol content and that could get your mash up to 12 to 20 % abv though I do not recommend it for beer. what do you pln on making ?
