did he mention "fucking poetry?" no, he didn't. so again... more rhetoric. oh wait, he did... in the same sentence as landscaping.

so, again... it's still rhetorical BS.

Pretty much any teenager can do landscaping.  And poets do make huge bucks.  Are not musicians poets?  How much risk do landscapers undertake, anyway?

Income taxes are only levied on the wealthy to compensate for the fact that if you're wealthy enough, you can buy everything tax-free from outside of the country.

It still perplexes me that rich people don't acknowledge that realistically, they actually reap more reward from a society with public services such as education, roads, and police protection if only because the workers they count on and the customers that buy their shit all rely on that stuff at least as much as they do. These benefits affect everyone, but a lot more people need to be able to do shit in order for the wealthy to run functional businesses. Even those who don't run businesses are almost always heavily invested in the stock marker, which relies on the success of many businesses.

It's pretty easy to lose perspective on all of that, and I'm as annoyed as anyone when I see the amount deducted from my paycheck, but it seems like everyone should at least have some notion that those who are better-off have clearly benefited more from society than those with substantially less.

I liked the article. Its in the typical Cracked style of going at it with both barrels in an all-out rant but at the same time making a lot of sense.

A lot more entertaining than this thread is so far. I doubt most here actually read the whole article.

article really made me think... before I was kind of on the "Everyone's just jealous of the rich-folk" bandwagon. I'm still a fan of capitalism, don't get me wrong. but the crony capitalism that keeps the rich getting richer needs to end. I would love to live in a society where your determination and efforts are rewarded accordingly but sadly we are very far from that :/

the thing I enjoyed the most about said article is Wong's shpiel (itsa word!) about we are all in this together... when I heard that before (or anything similar to it) I used to think "o that's just commie speak!" but it's very much true. we're all in this together which is why we need to get along and help each other up from time to time.

I realize this is very cheesy, and i apologize for the gayness but my take on the article was it's not a bad thing to be rich so long as you do what you can to keep the American Dream alive for other people. thats at least what I got out of it, and it was kind of an eye-opener for me. thanks Wong! If I get incredibly rich someday I will be sure to have this article framed somewhere in my office.

Beat me to it.
Most of what's being said here is either only tangentially related to the content of the article, or is misunderstanding what was said.
Definitely getting the vibe that very few people actually read and comprehended the full article.

Nope.  You should be paid for the worth of your contribution taking account of the scarcity of what you can do.  That is called the market.

I just pointed out that there are poets who make huge money.  I have no problem with that.  Or baseball players who are exceptional making huge money playing baseball or movie stars making huge money.  They make it in the market from people who willingly pay to them.  I have no problem with anybody who makes huge money just because they make huge money.  Even though I don't make huge money compared to them.  Compared to most losers, yes, but not compared to them.  I don't begrudge them one single nickel.  If they made less would you make more?  Nope.

total bullshit. one of my best friends is studying quantitative economics, and is one of the most brilliant mathematicians I have ever met. I can not do the same work that he does. His work is valued higher than mine, he will be a millionaire and I will not.

You ARE paid for what you do, accordingly. Everyone is paid relative to how valuable their job is to the people around them. People who make other people money are valued higher than people who work in a cubicle. As an investment banker you are responsible for making a LOT of people a LOT of money. Therefore, you get paid accordingly.

Please tell me who makes a ton of money doing basically nothing and then complains.

I'm not rich and I probably never will be unless they start paying people to masterbate or daydream about what it would be like if penguins ruled the earth, but if I ever do, if anyone so much as tries to take a penny off me without my permission, I WILL CHAINSAW THE FUCK OUT OF THEM and keep their forehead as a memento, even if I was about to throw that penny away anyway because it was a bit dirty. I agree with everything Mr. Wong says here, I'm just a bit sociopathic when it comes to my stuff and as much as I'd truly love to share his worldviews on how the world should be run with us all looking out for each other, my personal involuntary opinion is "it's either them or me and I like me better". Simply put always assume absolutely everyone is out to get you, from the crippled nun to the blind orphan, that way you're never disappointed. By all means do as many good deeds and charity work as you can, but never be suprised when every single person on earth drops the charade and all at once CHAINSAWS THE FUCK OUT OF YOU!

it's more about the attitude of people who make their money doing useless things for the sake of the market.

i really don't care, what anyone does or makes, as long as they don't think they are king shit over some stupid dumb bullshit they do. the market is fine, as long as we don't promote that the value of something is worth more then the substance itself.

that kind of commodity is just a representation of what the substance stands to remain as. the fluctuations of such value is not more important then the actual services and items.

hence you should be given what you allow others to receive, in respect to the value of an item of service. as to not inflate the purchasing price.

The comment was intended facetiously, but I've never had to pay taxes on things purchased from out of state.

Say you have a very organized budget and buy everything in bulk, you wouldn't end up paying taxes on things that people who live week-by-week have to buy locally.

Of course, you don't really have to be a high income earner to do that, you just have to be a smart spender. Again, the comment wasn't intended seriously, hence the grinning spaced-out awecid.

I've heard very persuasive arguments to the effect that income taxes place the burden of inflation on the people who can afford it instead of those who can't. It makes sense to me: the minimum wage is hardly enough to live on already. If the government relied on a flat tax, it would have to raise the minimum wage substantially to prevent people from starving. That would create a backlash in the form of reduced employment.

I don't really feel like getting into an argument over it. I'm honestly somewhat ignorant on this subject, and I'm not going to try to hide it. I lean toward socialism in that I think everybody should be given a fair shake if the alternative is to let the underprivileged starve. I think society has an equal responsibility to assist the poor and the wealthy. I think we could find better ways of doing this, but I'd honestly take my cues for how to do this from the Nordic model and I think I know which side your bread is buttered on re: the Nordic model.

minimum wage is not meant to be lived on!! It was NEVER meant to be a livable wage. It was meant to incentivize people to get REAL jobs
