Suchen's Floridian Finds (12/29/2012, Derpborough River)
    #15901535 - 03/04/12 10:43 PM (12 years, 26 days ago)

In order to stop gumming up the forum with my multitudinous posts, I've decided to amalgamate my Florida forays here, starting with today. These won't just be show posts though, I would love any help you could give me on the ID front. Thanks, and enjoy the ride!

3/04/2012

1) In some areas this covered the forest floor! Is this another Xanthoconium of some sort? I have real trouble with these darn boletes.

2) Boletus of some sort?

How many boletes can you count in this photo? (Hint if you hit 15 keep going :awesomenod:)

3) ??? Hard dry black blobs sprouting from a downed hardwood log.

4) Some sort of vase-like oyster. There were a few others on this log growing in the same vase-like fashion.

5) A Gymnopilus! Though I am fairly confident it was growing out of the conifer and therefore not active. The greenish spots you see I believe are artifacts of using the flash. Any thoughts on species? Still happy to find these guys. One of my favorite genera :sunny:

6) Polyporus tenuiculus? I haven't encountered it before.

7) I think these are Entoloma. They were popping up over a few hundred square feet under live oak and other hardwood.

Not an incredibly exciting day, but I was able to find a rather secluded cow field. If I ever get the urge to hunt some actives that ought to be a nice spot :hi5: Thanks for your help on these.

1 and 2 are Leccinum.  Ran-D may be right on the species.  There are several leccinum with that dimpled cap.  I learned it as Leccinum nigrescens so you may see it that way when you are looking it up.
Others with the dimpled cap include Leccinum rugosiceps.  They type of tree it was growing with may help when you look them up.  John

the above black blobs are visually identical to the fungi that is first to fruit from a pine log after a live standing timber harvest in the northeastern states. fruiting in within a month in warm temps. no clue though on a name, their spores stain cloths hardcore. i make benches and usually coat them with tons of polyurethane to stop this fungi, well one bench i left all natural and at an art show this old lady sits on it, her dress gets stained, she comes back the next day saying it was permanent and i had to buy her a new dress.

sweet foray! looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks for the info. I looked it up and it turns out I have another picture of this species in an earlier stage. It's from a different location, taken a few months earlier. Quite a difference!

Just a small bit of update with some oddities from the past few days. It has been extremely dry here for the last 3 weeks until yesterday evening. But when you're as stubborn as I am, there is always something to be found out there.

8) A red-staining Amanita I think, but I'm not even sure on genus. For some reason I am super-blanking even though it should be obvious. Not really sure how to ID this one.

9) Found another one of these koosh balls. Does anyone have an ID?

10) ??? I'm preeeeetty sure it's just a weird form of a common fungi, but still!

11)P...Panaeolus papilionaceus??? This was growing randomly out of a sandy/grassy hiking trail. The trail is sometimes used by horses, so possibly some ancient dookie down there?

And finally some miscellanea:

The snake is so scary and venomous looking, do you have an ID on the snake?

Do you guys think the koosh ball is maybe a Stemonitus?

Yep, cottonmouth/water moccasin/ any of a dozen other common names. You can always tell by the dark brown bar right behind the eye. And this one specifically is the Florida cottonmouth, Agkistrodon piscivorus conanti because of the two dark lines on the snout. I actually love venomous snakes! That thick pyramidal body and big triangular head are just so brutal looking  :bearbreakdance:  Cottonmouths are actually very docile and will let you get close. Copperheads are the ones you have to watch out for. They have no qualms with coming at you. My Canon SX40 has a 35x zoom which let me get that close.

For 10 I am thinking about going back to collect it. It really reminds me of a much larger version of something I found before. I will find and upload those photos tomorrow.

Hypholoma ericaceum! You tagged one of my recent ones with that as well from the same park (different sandy trail). I thought it was strange how yellow it was. Good call again :bow2:

The problem with the "Amanita" is that it had no bulb  believe me I was extremely careful. These were fairly dry so it's possible the bulb/volva had fallen apart under the surface. Also having found these before they don't have warts  Maybe I have just been highly unlucky the 3 or 4 times I've found it.

Thanks for all your help always team :sunny:

Wow that IS a water moccasin? That's fucking scary man. You Florida hunters never seize to impress me.

In Cali literally all I have to worry about is ticks, and maybe some poison oak in the warmer months. Once I saw a mountain lion when I was by myself in the redwoods, but that's about it.

Another small update for the thirsty 'shrooms that are somehow finding their way up through the parched sandy soil.

and etc.

The lizard is Eumeces fasciatus, an adult male five-lined skink. The yellow flower is from one of the many cacti (prickly pears) that are blooming in force. The caterpillar is (I think) the horrifying Florida version of a bagworm. Not sure about the white flower.

Another dry season update. We got a whopping 0.06 inches of rain yesterday so I didn't expect much, but what I got was... about what I expected. However! I did find two mushrooms which I couldn't identify offhand, and I am still having trouble with.

Is this Amanita citrina? The description fits perfectly (except for missing annuli which may have disappeared). These were smaaaaall. Like 2 inches tall with caps about the same diameter.

This next beast (and crazy strange abort) was growing out of the extremely fertile soil leftover from a prescribed burn right at the base of a burned pine. I think it was mycorrhizal with pine roots. Strangely it was growing out in bright sunlight and looked (and smelled) to be a few days old. No latex or new staining on gills. The pin/abort bruised pinkish red. And what's up with the odd root-like projections in the last photo? Spore print in progress, but given the age and the smell I am not too sure this one will turn out. Gills were covered in sand and ash

Miscellanea:

Zimmer wuz here

D'aawwwww  :inlove3:

Found another wheel bug (without the wheel, but with the creepiest back tat I have seen in a long time :runaway:)

Gopher tortoise chowing down on some dank grass nuggs

Hope you enjoyed! IDs are as always greatly appreciated

And finally some miscellanea:

great pics! if you put the close up of the cottonmouth over the stars n bars you might accidentally start a snake revolution of some sort. thats one mean summama bitch right there.

The swamp, of course! Seems to be the only place with any appreciable water around here. They really weren't kidding about the "dry season"  Alternative title: Battle at Fire Ant Swamp. When people tell you there are 2 million ants for every human on Earth...please believe them and give them a cookie because this swamp was CRAWLING with the little bastards.

1) Found these for the most part in shadowy nooks under branches and roots growing from the swampy soil. Spore print initially looks rusty-brown.

2) This mushroom starts off small, pointy, and pale yellow and eventually turns whitish brown and drops a rusty spore print.

3) A Psathyrella of some sort.

4) I don't expect much on the ID front for this one. Brought the stick home to print them but the mushrooms fell off and got mixed with my others. Can't tell which they are now. Though I do know the spore print is rusty considering all but the Psathyrella have left rusty prints. Might be the same as one or more of the others.

5) These give off the most amazing smell. There is a flower they smell just like but I can't pin it down. Very purpley/grape smell if that makes sense. Leaving a...you guessed it, rusty print. Reminds me of a Laccaria with the wrong colored print.

6) Found these little guys when I was trying to keep the fire ants from devouring my soul.

The lily pads are MELTING maaaan! I'm FREAKIN' out maaaan!

suchen, you need to start submitting your shots to National Geographic.  They have several links on their contact page for amateur submissions.  SEriously, your shots are just a good as the ones I see winning the weekly/monthly submission contest.

1. Probably Pholiotina but maybe Galerina, check pileipellis structure.
2. Inocybe geophylla
3. Psathyrella sp.
4. Psathyrella sp.
5. Cortinarius sp.  Some species of Cortinarius smell like artificial grape flavor.
6. Ascomycota

Only when it is well enough decayed that tree roots start to grow into the wood.  At that point you can have Laccaria, Cortinarius and all kinds of mycorrhizal stuff growing on wood.

the gills, season, size and habitat just don't match Cortinarius imo.

Wow. I never really realized that, despite the fact that it makes complete sense and should've been obvious. Makes you wonder at what point you have to stop calling it wood and start calling it dirt. Thanks for that.

Riverdweller: Thank you for that very flattering comment :flowers:. I truly don't think my photos are on the same level as the ones submitted to National Geographic though. I think the zoom may be fooling you :sunny:.

5 was not growing from the wood, but the soil adjacent to it. I actually found a few Cortinarii growing a month ago, blood. I agree though only the look of the cap on #5 reminds me of Cortinarius. It actually most reminds me of Laccaria, but dropped the wrong colored print  I need to get a scope to sort out this madness  :shake:

Alan, do you have any sources on the grape smell? I would love to check that out.

Actually Hebeloma fits pretty nicely with the gills.  What makes you say nvm, Thinker?

the stem texture seemed wrong for Hebeloma, but I cant think of or find a better option based on that smell right now

forgot to say cool finds suchen. 2 is especially cool. I really doubt Inocybe geophylla. maybe a crazy Bolbitius?

I was doubting I. geophylla as well, but I just can't think of what else it would be  None of them were slimy, none had a lined margin. I wish I could have captured the yellow color they had. I would never for instance call these "whitish". More definitely a pale yellow.

I guess its a good thing, but it raises the bar quite a bit.

Had to get out there before the big storm system moves through. I wanted to get a baseline so I can compare with a few days after what will likely be an inch of rain. Hope you enjoy!

There were many older Polyporus out there.

And a few destroying angels as well (right?).

Are these Russula brevipes? I didn't taste them and they had no distinct smell. The gill shot isn't that great, but it's definitely a Russula of some sort.

These two beefcakes are either Boletus or Suillus. It rained a bit last night which may be why they are so wet. They are not slimy nor are they sticky. Any ideas?

I was only out there for about 2 hours before I had to beat the storms home, but still found some random cool stuff.

The beetles are carrion beetles, Necrophila americana :runaway:. The caterpillar is a black swallowtail butterfly (Papilio polyxenes) larvae. Not sure what the orange flower is, but it's beautiful :bliss:. It really is that bright orange! I didn't enhance the color at all :sunny:

Russula brevipes is a large mushroom, in my experience.  Not sure what type of Russula you have.

I would say Suillus for your boletes.  The coloring looks right.

I agree with RD that your Russula isn't R. brevipes. As it's name implies its' stalk is very short...much shorter than the cap width. White capped Russula aren't as common as some other colors...kinda narrows it down a little. Could be Lactarius. Did you check for latex? Judging by the pore color your Suillus could also be Tylopilus. Spore print color?

Your flower is Asclepias tuberosa, "Butterfly Weed". A milkweed.

Nice pics, man! Keep it up!:toast:

I did not check for latex :facepalm3: because the mushroom just felt so Russula-ish. I will likely head back there tomorrow and slice one up. The bolete is printing now, but I just had to elevate it since all I was getting was condensation instead of spores. I think you can see a bit of spore print color on the apex of the stipe in the 2nd photo. Thanks for the flower ID, too! Didn't realize it was so common.

Thank you to RiverDweller as well. I thought R. brevipes because of the white cap and brownish discolorations. Two were small, but there was one much larger cap as well which I didn't photograph... sigh.

I don't know, all that was left was some fur and a bit of meat. It still smelled really foul though, so that photo is at 35x zoom from like 8 feet away. The closest I could come to identifying it is  :freakybirdthing:

I hadn't heard of the carrion beetles either until I got home and looked them up.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the swamp.

1) ??

2) Psathyrella sp.

3) Gyrodon merulioides. Apparently there are ash trees in the swamp. This was the yellowiest pore surface I have seen on these guys. Really an amazing mushroom all things considered.

3) Volvariella bombycina! I love finding these, but I have yet to find Murrill's yellow variant.

Not too much to share in terms of miscellanea this time around. There were tons of dragonflies and I almost trod right on a big fat cottonmouth. Luckily he moved first. Also a roseate spoonbill. I love these guys, perhaps due to the "scientific" name Platalea ajaja. Or perhaps because they seem to be the awkward derpy cousin of the flamingo, which is really saying something. The photos didn't turn out great though.

Hope you all enjoy!

Ever since I started shooting in RAW format and developing in Lightroom 3, my most go-to feature has been the custom white balance slider. You can choose from presets, but it saves no time and with custom you can nail your preference. Fixing white balance later in JPG format is a lot more hit-and-miss. When I shoot in the woods my camera loves to capture on the cooler (bluer) end of the spectrum down around 4500-5500 K. I greatly prefer the warmer 6000-7500 range for most forest shots. For this particular image (and many others as well) I made a custom white balance and upped the contrast to show the crazy pore surface a little better. Didn't touch color saturation or vibrance or anything. As you can see from the horribly underexposed shadows I didn't touch the exposure setting either, but that too can be fixed to a greater extent in RAW than JPG.

Nice Agrocybe pic, Gravija! You should edit out the Gyrodon meruliodes...it's distracting.:smirk:

Ever since I started shooting in RAW format and developing in Lightroom 3, my most go-to feature has been the custom white balance slider.
As you can see from the horribly underexposed shadows I didn't touch the exposure setting either, but that too can be fixed to a greater extent in RAW than JPG.

Right on, isn't Lightroom awesome? I don't think I ever not use that temperature slider.

Nice photo mods guys :rotfl: And on that note, inversion!

I actually love venomous snakes! That thick pyramidal body and big triangular head are just so brutal looking  :bearbreakdance:  Cottonmouths are actually very docile and will let you get close. Copperheads are the ones you have to watch out for. They have no qualms with coming at you.

Copperheads usually rely on their camouflage, sometimes to a ridiculous degree. I once put my hand flat down on the ground while trying to dig out something or other.  After about 10 seconds, I looked over to see a copperhead staring at me. The only thing between him and my face was my arm, planted firmly in the earth about six inches from his face. I froze for about a year (seemed like, maybe 5 seconds for reals) then I just exploded myself away as fast as I could in one motion. The snake never moved.

I was about, oh... 6 or 7 feet away initially. I have walked close to that puddle through that field of water hyacinth several times (now that water levels are drastically  low) and there has been nothing in it. Today I walked out and just got this OH SH*T feeling that I was about to die, and sure enough there he was. After retreating out of immediate striking distance I snapped the photos and video. Wild gators really don't scare me that much though to be honest. The only ones that scare me are the ones people feed.

Well, for mushrooms (and macro) in particular I would maybe look elsewhere first. I got mine to be a more all-around camera with the capability to take decent macro shots as well. It's a Canon SX40 HS hacked with CHDK to enable shooting in RAW format and other little goodies. I loves it so :awesomenod: The price has come down a good $60 or so since I bought mine several months ago.  Canon SX40 HS

Found a few interesting (but not that interesting) mushrooms while the gf and I were strolling through a park. Not a very exciting update I'm afraid

1) A lovely red Cortinarius. Strangely I always find these growing from well-rotted logs. I know Cortinarius should be mycorrhizal, but...

2) A very fragile Psathyrella. These had sprouted up on a number of fallen trees/logs in the area.

3) Amanita sect. Vaginatae

4) Amanita sect. Amidella (I am 97% sure)

5) ??? Smelled spermatic when young, and then half-spermatic half-active Gym like when mature. Spore printing it now.

Like I said, not a terribly exciting update, and no miscellanea either . But heck, I'm just happy there are mushrooms out there! We need a lot more sky water for things to really kick off down here though.

Having lived through an existence close to nature, one accepts the small and simple things as most important in life. Sun, wind, rain and snow. The sounds birds make, smells of fresh wild flowers. Love of all kinds, from friends and family, thy self and our neighbors. Beautiful sunrises to the darkest clouds dancing above in the sky. To forgive, learn, share and express. This is the only thing a man such as myself can ask for. What comes as the result is nothing short of the core of human existence, to truly live free in body and mind.

Had a more interesting hour-and-a-half hunt today after work. We had good rain (over an inch) just over a week ago and it has been very humid since. I think we are finally starting to clear that soil moisture hump the mushrooms need to thrive. Today got me really excited for tomorrow's all-day hunt at a cool state park :sunny:.

The return of the Abortiboletus! How frequently do you all find these foul-smelling buggers? I am finding them now every time there is a mass fruiting of boletes  :utterconfusion:

Thanks for checkin' them out as always, gang. Sorry I have been slacking on the miscellaneous shots lately. I will make up for it with a photo of a girl and her pet snake at a local town fair:

I don't know why she was carrying that thing around, but she sure loved it. The snake was totally chill, too!

Was finally able to get down to a beautiful state park with miles and miles of hiking trails on which to get lost. It was blazing hot (92 and very humid) by around 2:00 p.m. or I would have stayed and explored more of the off-trail wilderness. Finally had time to get a few non-fungal shots as well. See you on the other side.

??? Is this just an incredibly atypical A. bisporigera?

A neat little Amanita in section Amidella.

Here is that strange white Russula(???) again. This time I made sure there was no latex from the gills. Notice the very faintly pink margin. This wasn't an incredibly old specimen so I don't think it has just faded but that is a possibility. Didn't find any other red Russula on this hike though. Does anyone have thoughts on this one?

A brown Russula. Now THAT is a Russula color I don't see very often! Who knew I'd get excited over a brown mushroom? :sunny: I know the photos are crap, but can you see the light pink hue to the stipe? Quite interesting.

Boletes, boletes everywhere!

Strange and exciting polypores (no, seriously!)

:justcantwait:

And puffballs, too.

And now for something completely different:

Having lived through an existence close to nature, one accepts the small and simple things as most important in life. Sun, wind, rain and snow. The sounds birds make, smells of fresh wild flowers. Love of all kinds, from friends and family, thy self and our neighbors. Beautiful sunrises to the darkest clouds dancing above in the sky. To forgive, learn, share and express. This is the only thing a man such as myself can ask for. What comes as the result is nothing short of the core of human existence, to truly live free in body and mind.

Thanks! I am clearly very slowly being sucked into the genus Amanita. In the field I look and say oh that is section so-and-so... but shouldn't it be bruising red?... and why is it brown over the disc... and shouldn't the stipe be more glabrous  etc. These beautiful confusing little buggers seem to defy you at every turn if you don't pay them their due attention, and I love it so

A. roseitincta is in section Amanita and has an annulus. Mine is (I believe) section Amidella and has no annulus. Keep the ideas flowing, though! I will slap them up soon on Mushroom Observer.

i thought the annulus might have broken off.

I've met Rod before and he IS smart and truly a gentleman. He knows Amanita like no other (that I've seen) and his website(s) are awesome. He was a student of Cornelis Bas and in part carries on his traditions and methodologies. I wish I was a better student at his workshop. Amanitas rock!:nerd:

Most of my photos turned out poorly today  I need more practice focusing at f/8 as opposed to my standard f/2.7. I was trying to mix it up today and paid the price. Regardless, I did find some neat stuff. Looks like the Florida season is heating up :awesomenod: Sorry for the Flickr photos, this uploading to the Shroomery one or two at a time thing is just getting too old.

I couldn't get good photos of some of these to save my life! But it was still a very fun day. This is the most variety I have found since last year, woo!

This was from only an hour of hunting after work today. I have been so pumped about all the rain this week and last that even though it was still pouring this afternoon, I endeavored to adventure. The hour was incredibly prolific. Everywhere I turned there were new mushrooms from boletes to Amanita to Leucocoprinus. Because it was raining I wanted to save my camera for what I thought was the really interesting stuff. Not pictured are several species of Amanita in section Vaginatae and other sections, Tylopilus, Boletus, a few gigantic (7+ inches in diameter) cinerescent Russula, and many many others. The hour was so good I was even able to knock out two life goals in one go  :zomgnowai:

A bluing Mycena (this is a Mycena...right?) and Lactarius indigo (var. diminutiva)!!! I actually have more research to do on the Mycena. The stem and cap actually bruise blue :unbelievable:. The cap is mostly white, but as it has dried a bit faint brown tones have emerged.

Sorry I have no microscope  Can't wait to get out again this weekend! :sunny:

Wow these are so great! And you got the real Tremella fuciformis! (all I've been finding is its blobby yellow-tinged cousin Ductifera pululuhuana, and it is literally everywhere)
Great pictures!!

Great looking hunt 'n' purty photers.

Great, suchen! If any of these need to be scoped, it's the corts. How do you keep finding them on logs?!? That log doesn't even look that decayed!

Thanks, winters! It was an extremely gratifying hunt :sunny: Ductifera pululuhuana is a way more badass name than Tremella fuciformist

The red Cortinarius were actually growing from the steep bank of a sandy creek. The photos just aren't good enough to show that . These bad boys were growing eeeeeeverywhere! But they were behaving like good mycorrhizal mushrooms this time and sprouting out of the soil near oak tree roots. I could have picked a few hundred had I really wanted to. They were on average much larger (and browner at maturity) than the bright red ones I have found on logs.

Does Tetrapyrgos nigripes stain blue where damaged?  Or is it just kind of bluish?  According to mushroomexpert it sometimes bruises reddish.

Well, "nigripes" has me thinking it is supposed to be black staining technically, but my finds quite definitely stained midnight blue. And yes, they actually do bruise the whole way up and down the stipe with handling. When attached to the tree the stem bases are dark, but once picked and rubbed the stems go nuts. Even the cap in that last photo shows some faint bluing (blacking?).

Update imminent :sunny:

Is it actually staining blue, or are the stems blueblack and pruinose, so you can see the blueblack color better when you touch them?

It's a great time to hunt mushrooms in Florida :sunny: I just signed on for a year of Flickr, so apologies in advance for the continued dirigible-sized photos. Enjoy!

Boletes love growing from palm tree bases.

These Lactarius look (other than the blue), smell, and feel identical to L. indigo var. diminutiva!

You know it! I don't really hit the fields at all, so it would be fun to see what's actually out there.

Like Galerina marginata...

Hmm, I suppose I can't satisfactorily answer that other than to say check out the first upside-down photo, and then the very last photo on foil. The apex of the stem was completely white and after picking it went completely blue-black. I believe it's staining, but I have actually never found G. marginata so I can't quite say.

Thanks! It is indeed most likely Phaeolus schweinitzii, or at least that's what I am calling it. Glad you like it!

Thank you. I'm glad you like it; makes the time I spent even more worth it :sunny: I will probably put together a video in the next few days, but it probably won't be incredibly useful because I cheated on/made up the glow part so there's probably better ways

In retrospect, heading out to the woods in the midst of a Florida thunderstorm (more lightning strike victims than all other states combined) wasn't my greatest decision. But hey, chanterelles :sunny:

Got in a brief hunt during a lull in Tropical Storm Debby. All of the trails are under 4+ inches of water:

Hopefully the mushrooms and etc. will help make this not be a post about the weather. The mods around here scare me :llamastare:

Debby has dropped... a lot of rain. Check out what happened to these normally high-and-dry Polyporus arcularius

Amanita mutabilis! I have been wanting to find this for a long time :sunny: They look almost exactly like Amanita bisporigera if you're not paying attention, and the destroying angels are EVERYWHERE right now. Luckily A. mutabilis is larger and in today's case tended to grow in clusters of two or three whereas A. bisporigera is pretty much always solitary or separated by at least a few feet.

So I heard you Florida hunters get scared by banana spiders? I see your banana spiders and raise you almost stepping on these two friendly creatures:

The 1st is a cottonmouth, the 2nd is an eastern diamondback rattlesnake. I was about 10 feet from the cottonmouth, so no big deal. But the rattlesnake... man:

That rattler is huge! F*%# a bunch of that. Sometimes I'm glad the only danger I have to face is dehydrated yuppie bicyclists that are strung out on overpriced green organic energy supplements.

Purdy pics, suchen!
