 How much time and money will you have to put into growing shrooms?

So I am thinking about growing shrooms. I guess to make more shrooms it requires more equipment as far as jars and bins to grow them in? So lets say I want to make about 7-10oz of dried shrooms a month how much money and hours a day will I have to spend to grow them if I have no equipment right now? Or if 7-10oz of dried product is un realistic or really expensive and too much time how about just 1-2oz of dried shrooms?

the more you try to grow, the more expensive it gets. I could get 3 oz off of 12 1/2 pint pf cakes, in a month for about $50, but for a noob it's safe to say you could do it for less than $75
|

once you get the operation 'boot strapped' the monthly cost is basically just grain and substrate cost.
id say if your going with a mono style grow your looking at about 300 bucks to get everything going. that includes a PC, dehydrator, tubs, jars all that jazz.

hm, thinking that I might do it. Would it be possible to keep the jars in one of those styrafoam coolers while they grow?

If you really want to grow half lbs and lbs, look into a martha set-up, learn g2g and isolation and get yourself some PEU or PE spores. Isolate that bitch and use that to inoculate WBS or rye jars. Will probably grow more than 7-10 zips a month with like 6 trays in your martha.

one healthy monotub could flush 7 oz dry on its first yield. if I were you, I would look into monotubs. takes 2-3 qts of mycelium at the most. get a small PC, a syringe, one 68-120qt. tub, some polyfil, cleaning supplies, lighter/source of flame, a misting bottle, and having a ceiling fan really helps. I'd also get some opaque plastic to use as a 'window' for the monotub.
it's hard to say how much time it would take. at least 20-25 hours total. maybe more

I am currently on the 3rd flush of my first monotub. The first flush yielded somewhere between 7-8oz, and I harvested another 1-2oz off of the second. The total setup costs:
WBS - $10
Jars - $10
Tub - $6
Plastic Window for monotub - $4
Syringe - $15
Poly - $3
Verm - $5
Coir - $5
PC - $80
Total - $138
For additional batches:
WBS - $10
Verm - $5
Coir - $5
Syringe - $15 (there are ways to make a syringe stretch to an unlimited number of batches, so not really necessary)
Total - $20-$35
As for time, I started the process in the beginning of December, spawned on 1/1, and have close to 10oz on 2/22. If you want 7-10oz per month, you would have to make a monotub each month. For each monotub you should expect to commit a half a day to grain prep, then a half hour for inoculation the next morning. Then you must wait a few weeks for your jars to colonize. Once colonized, it will take a couple of hours of work for spawning. Then wait another 10-14 days for your substrate to colonize. Once you put them in fruiting conditions you can expect to put in 15min or so each day for misting and fanning, and maybe an hour per flush for harvesting/weighing/storing.

^good estimate^ but a PC and most likely a food dehydrator is also needed unless you already have one, which most dont seem to. id say 50-150 bucks more.

3 58 qt monos - 20$
1 40lb bag bird seed - 15$
1 24 pack coir brick - 50$
1 16 qt PC (Holds 7qt jars) - 60$
2 4cu foot bags vermiculite from uline - 80$
Big bag of poly at walmart - 8$
However many syringes/prints you want - We'll call it 30$
You'll also need some other common household items like aluminum foil and tape
So you're looking at 250 bucks to keep this hobby going, I put bulk prices up because if your going to do this for a while. Buying bulk is the best way to go. In the spring you will probably find better prices for verm, but in the off season I cant find it.
That is enough supplies to keep you going for a little under 100 tubs if you use Damion5050s tek. You'll have some verm left over too. I recommend halving his recommended amount into two 58qt tubs. I don't get an appreciable loss when I go from the full bucket to half. He is probably using bigger tubs in the tek tho.
Edit - Numbers are off, it would probably take another 3 or 4 bags of wbs to get 100 tubs. Whoops

it took time to do, but pf/multispore everytime
multiple sg chambers on shelves, good quality cycle timer
1.5 lb each month for probably 10-12 hours of work each month
i swear.
ps...being on unemployment helps the equation

try to grow a very small amount first(oz or 2), then gradually up your production.
don't try to grow too much the first time out, it cost way to much to have to toss it all in the trash, once you get a few good successes under your belt, increase production to your needed level.
Beware that at any given time your could have to pitch your whole grow in the trash, it happens.

If you want to do a big OP with nice equipment you could spend thousands. Pressure cookers and portable ovens add up. Especially when you want nicve shit!

Why is it that when a noob asks a Q for the millionth time every one says to do a search. but as soon as this type of Q gets asked everyone goes at it like a dick measuring contest. Why doesn't everyone tell this one to do a search or maybe.... do so research and get experience and answer there own Q.
