Dont throw away Trichoderma green mold !!!
    #15809062 - 02/14/12 03:44 PM (3 months, 12 days ago)

Thats right keep the green mold ( Trichoderma reesei )

it turns out the fungi have been trying to tell us something all along.

It can be used to make ethanol from straw and wood or spent substrate that normaly alcohol yeast dont eat.
it breaks the organic material down in the same way paul stamets used oysters to break down corn cobbs then convert them to ethanol .....but

Trichoderma reesei produces alot more bang for your buck so to speak.

you could grow mushrooms to sell then let the green mold do its work on the spent substrate then make fuel out of it then feed the left over cooked out grain to livestock as food that is easy on their digestive system...win win....

plus++
there are so many tax credits and guaranteed grants the govt pays you for making and starting up that you could rake in money just for making it....
here is a list of some of the tax breaks and incentives:
click

a science article on Trichoderma reesei:
click

another Trichoderma reesei science article quote i found:

"Another common wood digester is the fungus Trichoderma reesei. It is found in nearly all soils and secretes huge quantities of cellulase. The fungus was originally discovered by the United States army during the Second World War. It was responsible for breaking down the cellulose in the soldiers’ canvas tents and uniforms which meant they became very holey. It was known as ‘jungle rot’.

A company in Canada has harnessed the microbes’ ability to convert straw into glucose. The company genetically modified the fungus so that it produces even larger quantities of cellulase. A staggering 75 % of the straw fibre is converted into sugar. The left over woody matter, lignin, is dried and then pressed into burnable cakes. The glucose is then fermented with yeast to produce the biofuel ethanol."

the gmo type is not needed ....im anti gmo ...so nothing but natural Green mold for me.

im starting a farm soon and stumbled upon this info while applying for federal and state permits to make ethanol to fuel the farm equipment. so i thought i would share with the community.

...building my still now .... :blueman:  :restless:  :toiletduk:  :farmerdance:  :dumbhunter:

if you read the articles ....it tells you that once the green mold breaks down the "contaminated" substrate you mix it with sugar yeast and water to make beer then distill it...wa la instant ethanol ..

in case you didn't read the govt incentives you get about $1.47+ just in tax refunds for every gallon you make and use or sell using this method and it qualifies you for thousands of dollars in grants.
and 10,000 gal or less = free permit from govt
1000gal =free permit state (TN)
1000 to 2500 =$50 (TN)
2500+ = $100 (TN)

just one more reason to be excited about fungi...and moon shining lol

obviously you would need to take precautions to NOT contaminate your grow area.

but for those who grow cubes indoors in a country where it is illegal this is not an option because the I.R.S. can drop in and inspect your ethanol operation any time.

not that this would stop a wood loving species from growing wild* in your area.

but if you have an outdoor grow house and grow on logs/woodchips outdoors i don't see throwing your spent or molded grows and some straw/wood mix in an old deep freeze to let the green grow as too much of a problem.

if you have ever visited a mushroom farm you will see lots of green mold and if you didn't see any you were not looking hard enough. it comes with the territory just now there is a use for it.

i have been growing shrooms for almost 20 years, fought every color mold in the rainbow, grew more mushrooms than most of you will see in your life ,and been on this site sense it was started. i think i know a little about what i am doing .....but i never have stopped trying to learn something new every day.

just thought i would share what i found with you guys.

thanks for taking a look at the thread and leaving comments
wish me luck on the fuel permits guys.

Distilling spirits is illegal in the U.S without costly licenses. I don't see the practical application of this to the individual,  but interesting nonetheless.

This is interesting, but being an old distiller myself, what is happening is your replacing the nutrients in your mash with the stuff the mold doesn't eat.  This is a mute point because the yeast will eat ANY nutrient....

All you need to make ethanol is sugar, yeast and nutrients.  The mash can only get up to about 20% alcohol before the yeast dies because of the alcohol.  Then you have to distill it.  You can use ANY nutrient to do this, including straw, potato peels, orange peels, hell, even just plain old lawn grass...

The thing to remember is that no matter what you use as a nutrient, the ethanol will have a hint of taste of whatever you use as that nutrient.  If your burning it as fuel this wont matter, but if your drinking it it does!

:imo: for the home grower its not worth the time, effort, or cost to save the green mold...  maybe for industry just to reduce waist, but nothing else.
