Brazil probably does. I guess you think burning fossils in old shitty power plants is a much better idea. Until we see a story about the effects of all that smog on the health of little favela kids. Then we'll all cry about that and how those in power did nothing to develop renewable energy sources.
Why must people constantly stick words in other peoples mouths, i dont think burning fossil fuels is a good idea at all. I can understand that Brazil may need some more power but cant they choose a location that doesnt threaten the homes of 40,000 natives? I dont know, seems kinda dick

Apparently not.
It reads like you would prefer that all of Brazil suffer for the sake of 40,000 people just because they are 'native'. Y'know, the other Brazillians were born there too... Just because they are of a different ethnicity doesnt mean they are second class citizens.

Trust me, a government will fuck some peoples shit up to save money.. Im not trying to start a debate and The only problem i have with this whole situation is natives gotta lose their land and shit. I have a lot of respect for the native tribes of south america, especially the amazonian tribes. So will everyone please stop putting words in my mouth and assuming shit? dont assume..makes an ass out of u and me..

Yeah, my point was that it's a bit more complex of an issue than "How can they build this, don't they see what they're doing to people? Don't we have enough electricity already?"
A better idea would probably be to build a massive high voltage line from the US to Brazil, then making the statesians waste muy less energy, sell the surplus to Brazil and it might be enough so that they don't have to build this dam.
Oh post 420, why did I post you in this thread? :cryingindianpothead:

This sounds like an example of a government being well controlled by corporations. If those savage natives don't want to learn to swim they can get a real job like the rest of us men who live in the glory of freedom.

Im sorry, but thats just pure ignorance if its not a joke. Just because a group of people doesnt want to get involved with the bullshit of corporate and industrial society it makes them savage and stupid? They enjoy their simple lives and for the record, Tribesman work way harder than you could ever fathom yourself working.

Ugh You must be a Canadian because we don't badmouth money like that here in the states.
I would report that black magic practitioner to the proper authorities and continue hunting endangered species in the Amazon.

Exactly. Why would you want to give any credence to these rogue ethnic groups that contribute little or no profit to society at large?
We should stomp out their individuality so we don't have to redesign the McDonalds menu at their new government homes.

Because these "rouge ethnic groups" are the basis of modern civilization. All people come from one or more groups who lived similarly. Without the ancient knowledge preserved by aboriginal groups, we wouldn't have survived as a race. Not to mention the cultural aspect of it. So much of a peoples' culture is rooted in ancient ways. If we destroy that we destroy our own foundations as human beings.

I find it appalling what people will willingly do to indigenous groups just because they aren't modern, materialistic, and technologically advanced. We could learn so much from cultures like this. How do Americans think we survived long enough to colonize this country? How we expanded west? Dan Boone didn't cross the Appalachians on his own. The settlers on the Mayflower didn't magically know what this continent had to offer. The indigenous people were more than happy to share with us their knowledge of the land. Throughout history native peoples all over the world from north america to australia have tried to accommodate and help "civilized" settlers and explorers only to be taken advantage of and then fucked over big time.

Filling the amazon with concrete and steel is one of the worst economic decisions that could be made.
The potential for medicinal, social and ecological cures that exist in the Amazon far outweighs the "benefits" a hydroelectric dam will bring.
Species may go extinct because of this. We just recently discovered fungi that can easily degrade plastics. Whose to say the cure for cancer won't be inundated?
This is a poor decision.

Cry me a river Chief Joseph. I'd rather lose my foundation as a human being than live in the same culture as those ungodly headhunters. What would we be without our sacred right to privately own land and natural resources? As citizens we have an obligation to use these personal assets to increase our shared wealth.
Sure, thanks for corn Squanto, we will make you into a distorted historical icon if you show us how to use it. Oh, you can't hack it in capitalism and you don't like the way we are using your sacred knowledge? Too bad! Our free society is more powerful than you and your land, if you disagree take it up with the army I am sending your way.

I'm not even going to get into the issue of land ownership, I've already argued enough about it with Pris. I will say that we have very little inherent "right" to claim any portion of land, and we especially have little right to use natural resources the way that we do. You would lose your foundation as a human for wealth, a concept which isn't concrete and could potentially fail?
