I birthed these 8 days ago. They produced a couple aborts and now are just sitting there. I've been misting and fanning them 3 times/day - temp is around 78. Any ideas?

drop temps a bit (not saying thats the problem) but just keep misting and fanning. if they dont contaminate, they will eventually fruit

8 days only ? Well for me cakes always takes around 2 weeks for the first flush to appear. But since you have said they pinned and aborted already, weird.
To be honest Ive never had any problems with cakes.
Wait did you dunk them ? And after the roll misted them good ? The vermiculite looks pretty dry but hard to tell from the pic.

They will go no problem, keep the vermic wet and fan and just try to stop them

Ok, thanks for the tips guys - they consolidated for 7 days before I dunk&rolled them. I have a feeling they may have dried out some even though I tried to keep the humidity up, it still dropped below 80% a few times. I may have put too many holes in the tub so I covered a few up and the humidity's up around 100% now. I'll fan them good and keep at it and see what happens...

Some cakes can be very slow. I had 4 cakes that havent finished yet and 4 that pinned in 2 days time, its different from time to time. Just mist them often and dont let the dry out. You also want to have good FAE:)

dont cover the holes, just mist the cakes directly until they have droplets on them. Then fan for 4-5 minutes till your arms hurt. do that 3-5 times a day and you're cakes will stay hydrated with proper FAE and RH in your shotgun

Hhmmm maybe that's part of it. I've only been fanning for about 30 seconds each time thinking I just needed to get the CO2 out but apparently it's also about stimulating pinning with evaporation. Still learning!

This is what happens to the cakes when theyre "naked" and too wet:

Your casing there (the verm layer) is kind of thick, this can sometimes prevent the cakes from "breathing" if they get too wet for some reason(my own theory..). In your next batch, use slightly less verm and expose more surface. In my experience, this can help. Also, good FAE is important so fan them fuckers often.
The pic above is what to look for, this is what the cakes do when they become "logged".
