My first shiitakes are fruiting.

SO PROUD
First I had a big jar of Shiitake spawn from Fungi Perfecti. I gave baggies of spawn out to a lot of folks in town and kept one sandwich bag full for our own purposes.
I did a grain expansion of the sandwich bag to a gallon or so of spawn. It colonized pretty fast like this:

When it was fully colonized I made sawdust blocks. Mix of sawdust and chips from chunks of oak and maple. Followed the commercial sawdust/chip/bran ratio from MMGG on a very small scale and made sawdust blocks on Thanksgiving week. They colonized and browned over the course of 2 and a half months:

And then I had to go out of town on the day I was planning on trying to induce them to fruit. I came home to find them all forming primordia in the bag! So I stripped off the bags, washed a lot of brown metabolite pee off the blocks in the shower, and stuck 'em in a fruiting chamber:

Here's the earliest fruit

And some shots of the other blocks pinning

I cooked the early fruiter in a little sesame oil and tamari and fed it to my wife. Timing was great because she's leaving town for a while tomorrow and will miss the bulk of the first flush.

IT WAS EXTREMELY DELICIOUS

some notes
I wonder if these blocks were somewhat oversupplemented as they developed quite a blobby shape while colonizing. Because of poor planning and lack of space I made only three blocks where I probably could have made about thirty. If there's oversupplementing in the bags it's probably from the fact that there's so much rye in each one.
I didn't get a chance to cold shock the blocks.. they started fruiting in the bags without it. Fine by me.

yea, I had some retarded looking shitakes on my over supplimented blocks but once they got rid of some of the excess nitrogen they began producing more normal looking and very large fruits

Maybe yours will do the same thing.
good job!

Hm yes. There is a horrible blob. Some of these look like they might make a mushroom shape as they get larger, though.
When you say "after they got rid of excess nitrogen", do you mean "In the second flush"? Or did it put out some blobs and then some regular mushrooms in the first flush?

one more picture for today. Here is the biggest weirdest blob so far.

You can see where it wanted to start making a cap, but it just had way too much stem to put somewhere, i guess.
I let it listen to Frank Zappa and remind it that even though it's a mutant freak I still love it because I grew it.
I feel more like "Look at the cool mutant I found" than "Damn my blocks are failures"

Well here's one properly formed shiitake! Off of the block that offered the single fruit in the bag.

Cold shocking the other two blocks that haven't produced anything yet.

In the parallel universes where I didn't oversupplement this block, I'm getting a really satisfying flush right now.

Also, the brown stuff in the perlite is drippings from the blocks.

@hardtosay
Those all look mostly like capless shrooms. Are you using the SporeWorks strain by chance? I've had similar results as yours with their strain.

I made this with spawn from Fungi Perfecti. I oversupplemented the blocks and they are indeed capless blobs. But look how many there are! This is at least telling me they're in the right environment for fruiting.

Well, don't use too much bran, and keep your spawn ratio low so that the rye spawn itself doesn't oversupplement the sawdust.

Ok let me end this thread with something that actually looks like what I was going for.
Must have unevenly mixed the substrates when I made them up. Two of the blocks blobbed endlessly, but the third went ahead and did this for us.

The two biggest shiitakes I've ever seen in person. Super tasty.

Nice job! Can you please look at my problem with shiitake on this thread of mine and tell me what's my problem. Did any of yours looked like that early on? I figured with all your experience with different strains, you would know some answers or clues.
