Is there a prayer, mantra or phrase you recite and find comfort in during "bad" trips? * 2
    #15807053 - 02/14/12 05:16 AM (3 months, 13 days ago)

Is there? What are your bad trips about and what do you use?

My bad trips usually revolve around acute death anxiety, being afraid to die at that moment and time.

Last year, during a roll on 6-APB I accepted Jesus Christ in my heart when I was overcome with bliss. Mere hours later I needed him badly as I took what I assumed was NDAI but in reality was 300mg MDPV, a walloping life threatening overdose, was treated to a wailing ambulance ride to the ER where I quite literally fought for my life with every fiber of my body, so overcome that I voluntarily let my pee run free on the ER stretcher because I needed all my willpower to fight death, and couldnt spare a bit of energy for proper urination.

It was profoundly shitty and a turning point in my life.

Ever since I've been letting some Christian mythos into my life.

When I now face annihilation peril, I recite Psalm 23:

Quote:

The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name' sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: For thou art with me;
Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;
Thou annointest my head with oil; My cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

-Psalm 23

The last line is the kicker for me, and the greatest comfort: "and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever." which to me means that whether I live or die, I always will be infinitely connected with this Universe and that though my body may be erased, the Laws of the Universe that gave rise to my soul remain eternal, because since this universe contains all time within it, it truly is Eternal.

I believe that since I view this cosmos as Eternal, so will my soul be, and like all things, it shall be given life forever and ever in every possible way.

Picture a lone proton drifting through space asking itself "Am I alone in the universe?" But no! the incarnations of the Proton are many and a staggereing number of them coexist at any given time. Some are destroyed, some newly formed, an eternal (re)cycle. I believe that this is how it is with you and me too, our soul will forever end up in every possible body in every possible life, as the Lottery of the Universe will forever draw numbers. When your number comes up, you are given life or its taken from you.

Thats what "and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever." means to me, and what makes Psalm 23 so relevant for me, it invites to put faith in the process of the Cosmos.

Not exactly as the bible intends it of cours, but far more soothing for my modern rational mind than eternal reward or damnation.

You! What prayer, mantra or phrase do you use when the going gets rough in a trip, and what for?

Mantras are powerful by way of acoustic repetition, more so than the content of the language. Cycling through drones and chants gradually renders the words mere bridges to a different state. It's a case of using language to get away from language.

For this reason, in difficult trips I usually opt for pure glossolalia. It precedes naturally and spontaneously after beginning with one syllable or string (e.g. 'om mani padme hum'). Once it is underway, the features of my vocalization are moved by my desires to impact my mind: it sings blessed nonsense to my subconscious and soothes it, breaks through habitual patterns, takes a life all its own.

Once on mushrooms I learned overtone singing ("throat singing"). It was a beautiful experience and I was sure it didn't arise from myself. It stuck around for a few days afterwards, but I can't do it anymore sober.

I wouldn't say it was a bad trip by any means, but one time I had an extremely unexpected experience on a low/medium dose of mushrooms.  As reality was being ripped away from me and any sense of self was being crushed by the weight of the universe, i kept repeating, "i only took a couple grams, you can't overdose on mushrooms."  It made me feel better until the point of breakthrough.  This was when I found out that I LOVE the lemon tek with combination of acidic tea.  (cranberry green in this case)

It sounds ridiculous to me even now given the dose, but I think there was more going on than me and the alkaloids.  I feel like I was supposed to have the experience I did, and "they"
(who/what ever it was) didn't care about my dosage.

I like that psalm you have there ^
kinda reminds me of the pulp fiction one the way it starts.

I usually just repeat something along the lines of "This too shall pass." or "I'll be myself again."  Not profound or poetic I guess but it works!

Trips go bad most often due to seeing/experiencing something you don't like & wanting the trip to stop
It all comes from wanting it to stop, fearing to lose control, and using a mantra, or anything, is still trying to stop it, trying to reverse what currently 'is'

This is where psychedelics come into their own spiritually, because they are taking the notion of control away from the ego
You can do NOTHING to make it stop, surrender biatch

Part of the reason I don't venture into the 'Psychedelic Experience' forum is because much of the discussion seems to be around gamesmanship - this is especially true of the newer members.

On higher (aka, sufficient) doses, there is no imprinting the experience with a cute little mental preparation or analysis. McKenna was fond of saying, 'you don't take the mushrooms, they take you.' People who go in with expectations usually get smacked in the face (a television in an adjacent room just had a character say, "did you just spank me!?" as I typed this). Similarly, as you said in terms of control, trying to wrestle and push the event in one way or another is just going to spiral into a loop of fear and anxiety.

It's old hat, that goofy question of "what should I do?"

It's the death trap of pickup lines for men and women, the death of spirituality, the death of job interviews, the death of even trying to fall asleep. You don't try to fall asleep. You fucking give in to it. I know I'm preaching to the choir, it's just irksome at times.

exactly, you asked, you didn't demand it to or try to control it to do so

yet at the same time demanding correct behaviour from the mind can be done successfully, if done with an authority that is sourced beyond the mind, not from the ego trying to desperately control things, and using a mantra could be a sort of authority that is sourced from beyond the mind

i still wouldn't recommend any thing as a way of stopping a bad trip though, mushrooms are teachers not to be silenced by us but to be given voice through us

BTW 6-APB MDVP - ER - WTF!?

I like this alot, its applying the 'spiritual' truth of non-doing to daily life situations, showing how we can rob ourselves of our own intuitive spontaneity through worrying about 'what am i gonna do?' in any given situation

Just like that caterpillar we trip ourselves up

How great it is to not worry about what you are going to do, to not worry about anything at all
Not worrying about 'what to do' gives the mind no foothold in the future, so it remains simply present
What a burden to unload

“Seeking but not finding the house builder I travelled through life after life.
How painful is repeated birth!
House-builders, you have now been seen.
You will not build the house again”

Just felt like posting that

I have only ever had one truly "bad trip" and it was in reality the best trip ever.  Why would I need to have a catch phrase or a mantra or some other thing other than to say I thought I was gonna die but I didn't.  So there.  Seriously though you guys do a lot of drugs if you gotta worry about bad trips and shit like that.  Keep it cool man.

yes, same as i used during my out of body experiences when something eerie wants to fuck with me... "LOVE....everywhere."

then it rains diamonds.

you could say "eat shit mother fuckers!!!" and it would do whatever u BELIEVE it would do. it's all in ur head bro, all has to do with the amount of faith u have into whatever u believe. its the power of BELIEVING that makes whatever we b elieve in as strong as it is or as weak as it is.

just know u are loved and protected always. and to believe otherwise is the exact reason u feel otherwise.

either you're there or ur not. ya know, either u get it or u dont. u are one who needs to listen to his gut feeling, fuck everything/body else. u already know whats good for u bro.

Cool thread. WOW is a pretty powerful mantra IME. It's the first thing I said coming back from my first DMT trip.

i was listening to a terence mckenna lecture once and he said something about singing out loud turn a bad trip around. i've never done this, so i don't know if it works. i have had lots of what some would call "bad trips", but just because something isn't fun doesn't mean it's bad. "bad trips" teach us important lessons.

Whenever any of my trips start to get negative, or have negative aspects, singing out loud helps me immensely. Especially a song that means a lot to you. It grounds you back to earth imo.

I hate to say this, but I've consumed everything from RCs like 5 meo,2c's,mp's ect. to psilocin, and lsd, even lsa in large proper extractions.

The only time IVE EVER had a "bad trip" was i went into a severe anxiety dive during a DMT trip.

Shrooms and LSD Have ALWAYS been clean, enlightening spiritual experiences for me.

Like I said I hate to say im like 100+ trips to 1 bad.. I hate to say it in fear that my next mushy trip will be tragic, lol. But I know my psyche and i only indulge in psychedelics when in perfect mindset.
