 I want to learn latin so bad.

All these names would be easy if I know latin. Any online help? How do you TI's remember all the names?

Mushrooms Demystified has a few pages on latin, it has definitions for latin words that are common in mushroom names.
There is a book that Else Vellinga recommends called Botanical Latin. I asked Peter Werner about it and he said that book wasn't the best one, I forget which one he recommended though.

I doubt that. I had Latin in school, but it doesn't help much in terms of botany. A little, but not much.

Like Koraks, I must say that my school latin doesn't help much. Actually, lots of mushroom names seem to be ancient greek. However, learning one after the other isn't too hard. It also helps, if you write down the names once or twice. Just avoid reading quickly and remembering them incorrectly.

i have perfected remembering them incorrectly, and when using the correct names of fungi, often get tong tied.

Only because I use them every day.
I still can not spell or pronounce them. And I never will be able to. I use spellcheck and index fungorum for that.

google speak is awesome!
I'm a phonetic speller, which is bad for me in lots of ways but seems to work well for mycology lol

I use that awesome Mushroom Name Translator program (I still use it frequently with new mushrooms) that algolagniac whipped up! After a while you begin to see the relationship between certain chunks in each word and you'll be like oh, that means 'turns blue' (caerul is blue and -escens means becomes) or oh that means 'white' (pallidus, albo, etc.) which starts to help you

Sometimes you have to separate the words into their constituent parts and enter them one at a time, but usually the program works perfectly!

Looks like a very nice and practical bit of software.
Is it still available, and is it for both Mac OSX and Windows?
Other than that I usually just try to pick up the meanings of the latin names
as I go along.

I just PMed algolagniac about reuploading. I am not positive, but I believe it is for Windows only since it requires the .NET framework

No wonder it sounds Greek to me  I doubt if I would've learned it in school as well. It was an information overload what with other languages, calculus, physics etc. not to mention the parties, dates, booze etc. But I think its different when you really want to learn.
That's what I decided to do Suchen. Start with colors because that's so visual. Maybe one color a day.
e.g. Purpurea is purple. Atropurpurea is dark purple. Rusulla Purpurea is purple and R. Atropurpurea is dark purple Rusulla. I noticed that many common names are direct translation like Geoglossa Atropurpurea is Dark Purple Earth's tongue. That's the only 2 i found so far. Any other purpureas out there?

There are several endings such as -ea, -atus, -oides, -aceus and several others that sort of just make the word an adjective. Though technically in this case it means "the color of". So Gymopilus pupuratus means the purple Gymnopilus. Cortinarius alboviolaceus means the whitish-purple Cortinarius.

I tried to post the other purple mushrooms, but it said "Post to large to fit in database." It was the first time I have ever seen that error message.
