Compacted Coir/Poo = Stalled

Two trays have been colonizing for 6 days, rye grain spawned to a mixture something like 50 poo / 30 coir / 20 verm. It compressed more than I would've liked and I didn't have the wherewithal at the time to boost the verm. Also I used Hoffman verm which people complained about clumping too much. One tray is only 3" deep and seems to be colonizing OK, though slow. The other tray is 5" deep and seems to have stalled completely, and its starting to give off a mild fermenting scent. Pretty sure anaerobic conditions are well underway in the heart of it.
My question: Would it make sense to throw the tray back in the glove box and fluff it up? I've been pretty clean about things so contaminant exposure should be pretty low at this point.

Hmm, throw it in the FC even though it's barely colonized??
My basic question is- has anybody ever re-mixed their trays after they've started colonizing? And would this help if the substrate is compacted?
