To cut or not to cut, i have a question
    #15803418 - 02/13/12 01:50 PM (3 months, 14 days ago)

So these are the oak pellet/bran blocks i have put into fruiting conditions 3 days ago. They are in filter patch bags and a few days after fully colonized i cut about 5 x shaped holes on the sides of the blocks to hopefully encourage fruiting from these. So i have read other post on the matter of cutting the bag off, the top off, or leaving about an inch of the bag on the bottom. Well one bag started forming primordia right away from 2 of the five cuts. So i figured this is where all the fruits would form. the other bag then formed no fruits at the cuts and today i noticed A LOT forming on the top of the block inside the bag. So i cut this bag off leaving 1" of bag on the bottom to prevent bottom fruiting. Washed off the metabolites, and it is going to live its life like this. Now for the other bag. So there are about 3 clusters coming out of the original cuts. But, there are also many starting to form on the top now and even the side of the block not by the cuts. I know these things have a mind of there own.

So should i just cut this bag back like the other or just let it go and see what happens?
When is too late to cut the bag off to save the top fruits?
Should i cut slits near the pins on the side of the block?
Am i over thinking this?

Pics

The second one is the bag off with all the top clusters. The last two are the bag on with side clusters and new top clusters. Thanks.

I guess it depends where you cut your slits.  Did you cut them lower down so no direct air can get into the empty air space above the block?  I've cut top the top off but left maybe an inch coming up the side of the block.

I've cut slits and had success too but that block contammed before a second flush, but the others with tops missing didn't.

Ya the one bag i cut back and left just an inch on but the other i left on for another day to see which pins are progressing. But i think im just going to cut the bag off as the other one and mist between fruiting. Seems to be the consensus with this species.

what kinda oyster.. I have found to fet a harvest with less aborts is to let them start to make there knots of pin set while still in their incobation area, mine is dark and about 60 to 70.. Then when i move them to the fruiting area these places seem to take off with less aborts.. Some times I get ants in my pants and I put them in early. Then i take my finger and press through the plastic to kill them off of stick a knife in and cut lots off not sure if necessary but ya know ... So this may not be what u were asking but what i have noticed.. Usually once the caps of the oyster get about a dime or so and the others or noticabley smaller the others stall...

I think it  just depends on the bag.  Its almost impossible to get pins to come out of small holes.  If a bag  is pinning well on top,I cut the top off.  If its pinning all over I remove the entire bag.  Great for a wicked first flush but the myc. is likely to pan after that unless you really keep up with hydrating them.  I have tried about every possible thing you can think of with respect to the bags, half off, 3/4 off, top off, large holes all over, and I still havent come up with a "do it the same every time" senario.  Oysters are just funny that way.

Ya i have thought about this after i just had a elm oyster block pin like crazy, probably 3/4 aborted, then the remaining fruits only got to about 1/2 of there potential

So these bags were nearly identical. Same sub, same spawn rate, same incubation time, same holes cut. Both acted differently. Guess its just a circumstantial thing you have to judge with experience.

An update on the blocks. These pin clusters are everywhere!!!

Do you think i put these into fruiting conditions too early? They have been forming pins for almost a week now. It was fully colonized but just barley. The temps range from 64F day time and 58F night time. Anyway things look good ill keep you updated.
