Or can i just stick them in a big pot with boiling water for an hour or so? I just want to know if a pressure cooker is absolutely necessary for sterilization .

A p/c is not neccissary but it helps. If you ever hope to do grain spawn it is neccissary, but not for pf cakes

If in the future you are trying to do bigger than just some cakes, yes, you will need one.

I heard you can steam sterilize grain by boiling the jars full of grain in a pot for 8hrs, I never tried it though

Bah...
You'll need one eventually. Get one now and save yourself the trouble.

Actually not everyone was a noob. Being a noob is a very new phenomenon. Many people, the great majority in fact, were simply "beginners", "novices" or "new to mushroom growing". Being a "noob" is reserved, and in fact created specifically for and by, the newer, much more lame generations coming about.

You will probably want to move to grain soon as you will find pf cakes are small time. Even if you can get pushrooms to grow our of every inch of surface space on your cake, it is still small compared to taking grain spawn to bulk. For grain you will need a pressure cooker. Honestly,it is a good investment and grain is the same amount of work for a much larger return. I sterilize these big ziplock plastic bucket fulls of WBS and I think it works better than plastic bags or jars.

a pressure cooker will pay for its self you can get one for 35 bucks or you can spend 800 both perform there function more expensive comes with more bells and whistles and are generally bigger some even have a heating element built in... save time and heart ache and get one even if its used as long as the seal is good and nothing is broken. my first was a 8qt hand me down it went through its paces before I got it and it worked great untill I dropped the lid and the weight cracked.
