Spiritual One-upmanship: pulling a fast one on Gaia.
I learned how to meditate and do yoga. I read books by really smart people, attend spiritual lectures and retreats. I shed the ego and quit pursuing earthly pleasures. I abstained from violence. I reach out and help others in need. I sit silently and count my breaths. I calm the anxious mind. I tame my lustful desires for sex. I eat with mindfulness and walk in peace. I communicate to others the processes that led to my betterment.
Go ME!

As if we could wrestle free from the all-pervasiveness of the Universe/Self/Mystery/Divine/Cosmos/Brahman/Source/Soul/Spirit/Dream and control anything. "I know what, I'll sneak up on it with a morning prayer and surprise it!" Ninja tactics indeed. Or, "If I can't win the game by cunning wit, I know what, I'll suffer through life and earn it with humility: dusty knees, bruised hopes, a battlefield of emotions from life's disappointments and utter de-emphasis of me." Jesus Christ tactics indeed. Ad nauseum.

Great post. 
That's a good observation too. I feel that a lot of Spirituality is One-Upmanship of the person next to you. No need to get caught up in more games.
