From wild oyster fruits to grain spawn! +pics

While walking in the local woods, I found 2 species of wild oysters, one strain blue and another brown. I picked up the branches and brought 'm home. Then I cloned the fruiting bodies to cardboard. That was January, 15th. The mycelium was very aggressive all the way from the start:

When it had fully colonized the cardboard, I used small pieces to inoculate some coffee grounds. That was 7 days ago. Colonization is currently around 50% and accelerating :

The dutch writing stands for brown and blue oystermushroom

Couple of days ago, I bought a 50 lbs bag of wheat and a 50 lbs bag of cracked corn, both about €8/bag, locally. Couldn't find any rye... Soaked and boiled a 50/50 mix, good for 4 1-liter (~1 quart) jars and 2 half-liter jars.

Since I have currently no PC available (looking out for one), I went for tyndallisation as an alternative way for sterilizing. After the 3-day process, I inoculated both smaller jars with mycelium from the cardboard cultures, that was 3 days ago :

Mycelium is allready growing!

I intend to inoculate the larger jars with the coffee grounds.

Clearly, the blue strain is currently growing at about double speed than the brown! I'll add pics later.

Very cool, check out my grow, also a wild collection to fruit of Pleurotus cystidiosus. How did you clone your fruiting bodies to cardboard? I tore open a cap in the hood and took tissue samples.
Cool pictures and looks like a success so far... good work!

Thanks for your kind words, gentlemen!
Time for new pics -and maybe a problem to be solved.
No molds so far on the coffee grounds, these look like very healthy cultures to me. The blue's are *very* aggressive :

The brown's myc look like doing a lot calmer :

On the grain cultures I may have a problem, though. Here the brown's look most healthy :

On the 'blue' inoculation something strange seems to be happening. one side of the jar looks perfectly good :

However on the other side, the myc seems to 'collapse' and I am very much afraid that I am seeing a blue-green stain on some of the wheat grains. So I think this one got contaminated :

I am going to keep this jar for a couple more days and see what is going to happen. What do you think?

@ John : these 'smal jar' grain cultures are cardboard to grain. I intend to use the coffee grounds to inoculate the larger grains.
@ IslandFungi : I cloned basically the same way as you did, with tissue from the inside of the fruiting body.

well it does look to be contamed....but I said that before on the coffee grounds....lol...and was wrong
I do know that in the winter months with the dry air... that indoor contaminants are a pesky problem ....at least in my house they are
working without a PC would make it difficult....but it looks like your doing pretty well so far ....fingers crossed and good luck to you!!

I am doing a little cardboard cloning project also. I am interested in your methods to prepare the cardboard as I am finding that I am definitely getting myc growth - but also what looks to be a penicillin and cobweb molds in other areas of cardboard along with it. I boiled + PC'd the cardboard in jars. Must have been in the transfer even though I used peroxide solution and a GB....
The good news is I have ONE shitake square thats looking good and clean - so for others that may and try this...its all about the numbers\averages with this type of tek to get success IMHO.
Cheers

AbbeyRoad, I soaked the cardboard in hot water for a few minutes and then microwaved it for 1 min at 900W in a plastic food ware container. While still hot, I transferred the cardboard into a ziploc bag and microwave again for 40 sec at 600W. Close the ziploc and let cool down to ambient. Then clone with inner tissue from the mushroom. Use flame-sterilized knife and pincet. Work FAST. When closing the ziploc, make sure there is enough air inside - the ziploc should look a bit 'inflated' when closed. Leave the ziploc at ambient temp. for a couple of days, after 3 days, growth should be visible. It's very slow at first. When accelerating growth is visible, open the ziploc ever so slightly and 'pump' it a couple of times to refresh the air inside, then close again. Check growth regularly. Transfer to coffee grounds or grain when fully colonized. You can keep the cardboard culture in the fridge for an extended period of time.

Keep us posted as you are... I will share my cardboard experience in a seperate thread if my experiment yields anything positive, maybe even if it doesnt. But it looks like you are farther than I into the process, so I will watch your thread..

7 days ago I inoculated te larger jars. Mycelium is *very* active now :
I'm ready to inoculate the straw!
