So my 70 year old neighbor and his roomie were talking about Gulash * 1
    #15802252 - 02/13/12 09:06 AM (3 months, 14 days ago)

Opposite to my parent's house lives a man who helped me with my exhaust on the car when it was corroded through one time. Since that time I joined him every now and then and drank a beer with him. He often has people over in his garage where he does his work (he's a hobby technician and quite a chilled guy).

So the last time when I was over there was somebody who is living in the same house as him and he kept saying that he should look after his gulash on the stove.

Through the following conversation I caught up some nice ideas for a gulash recipe.

You take:
-A pan and a pot
-diced beef
-two onions
-half a knob of celeriac
-two carottes
-one paprika
-some small (very sweet) tomatoes
-one clove of garlic
-mustard
-small pickeld cucumbers
-two tablespoons of flour or starch
-two cups of water (more or less)

Whether you fry the meat and the onions in the pan or not (I prefer to do so), you basicly just cut everything into pieces and put it in the pot.
then you stirr the flour or starch into the water and pour it over the meat and vegetables to thicken the sauce a bit.

Then you cook it like two hours on low until the meat starts dissolving. It gets very tender and adds substance to the fluid. It depends if you want to cook the vegetables until they fall apart, if you don't like that then put them in later before it's finished.

Now you have all the time in the world to spie this pot of gulash up as you like it. Recommended spices are: Thyme, black pepper, red pepper powder, parsley, lovage, sugar, salt.

It tastes good with noodels/rice/wheat grains/potatoes and it is nice because you have an easy, healthy and delicious dish that you can cook days in advance. So if you are single, as I am, It's fairly nice to have some delicious food to put into the microwave when one comes home.

Have fun.

A bell pepper (no heat). We call them 'paprika' around here.

It's difficult to do in large quantities if you don't take the time to taste and season.

Had an older German lady named Lottie who watched my brother and I as kids. To this day I have never had better Gulash. Thanks for sharing!

:rofldrunk:

You should eat in an American highschool cafeteria...not much good comes out of there.:crankey:
The seasoning was pretty low on the list of errors in their goulash.

Yeah, gulash is the epitome of awesomness!
But I see there's the most important ingredient missing in your recipe - a cup of red wine!! You can't have gulash without wine!
A handfull or two of dry Boletus edulis mushrooms makes it even more awesome!
