I have never seen any evidence that the government uses data from social networking sites that isn't available to the public.
If they are investigating you they might check your wall, but I doubt they sift through your private messages without a subpoena.
The point of facebook is to collect information about you for marketing purposes. While I do not like marketing in general, they marketers already have massive amounts of information about me. Since they have access to all my credit card statements saying what I bought, I don't feel that facebook is much of an additional privacy violation.
At the end of the day, the point is to send you targeted ads. For example, I will be on some random website, and all of the banner ads and graphics are ads for microscopes. I know I was profiled to generate that page, and I don't really mind. I would rather see ads for microscopes than for sports illustrated and gay dating sites.
If there was clear evidence that the government was adding my facebook PM's to my FBI file, I would feel differently.
The only people I know of who were busted from facebook posted illegal things in public, and some parent saw it and called the cops.
I think that the benefits of facebook outweigh the drawbacks. I have a lot of friends all over the world, and I am not going to make tons of international phone calls just to catch up with what they are doing. A lot of my friends are too poor to own phones, so facebook is the only way to get ahold of them. It is really cool to be able to browse my friends pictures, and to post my own pictures and have a lot of my friends instantly see them.
I post pictures of illegal mushrooms on facebook in public areas pretty often. But the mushrooms are ones I found outside, and the pictures are of the mushrooms in their natural environment. There is no evidence that I picked them or took them home. If I get busted or experience negative consequences by doing this I'll sound the alarm.
It is amazing how popular facebook is - Walk by any internet cafe in Mexico and 19 out of 20 people will be on facebook.

A year ago I was hanging out with friends and was logged into facebook. While I was looking away, a girl reached over clicked "like" on a gay dating ad. For the next 6 months, 80% of my facebook ads were for gay things.
I haven't seen any gay ads on there for several months now, but it took them long enough to figure out that I wasn't clicking on them.
Checking my facebook just now, the ads are for camping supplies, cute single girls, atheist tshirts, music and IT security. This choice of ads is amazingly congruent with my interests - in fact, that pretty much sums up exactly what I want. Of course I don't click on them anyway.

Selective advertising is rampant on facebook indeed. Youtube as well. I always find myself saying, "damn the masses are finally coming around with their taste these days", then I remember that it's selected towards my likings and I'm immediately reminded that the masses are still not that interested in my preferences, and worst, big brother is paying close attention to my every move... lol

This ushered in an age of spiritual unity and peace. This allowed for mankind to reach it's full potential including immortality and intergalactic exploration and habitation. Thanks, God.

in most instances they need do nothing more than submit a request for information on department letterhead, in some cases these companies offer up information to law enforcemtns when they feel a serious crime has been committed of which they're obligated. some will require a subpoena

Your life...You can always choose to not use it.Something bigger and more popular will come along another day.

You can read books about mycology and taxonomy all your life, until you actually go out and hunt mushrooms you are nothing but a bloody n00b. Same goes for mushroom cultivation or any other subject. Theoretical knowledge is nothing without practical application of that knowledge.

I most prefer my current method of using facebook - with changed name and photos that don't at all betray any connection between my online personae and my physical realm body.
