 Where do you guys think I stand here?

So, I studied abroad last fall...lived in an apartment with two other kids I hadn't met before going.
I was sharing a room with this kid. One night, maybe 4 weeks in, we went out for beers, I didn't really get drunk but my one roommate was drinking a good amount, got pretty drunk, and crashed early.
I stayed up a little later, went back into our room to crash. As I was getting into my bed I knocked a glass of water off the bedside table...thought nothing of it, just oh well, i'll pick it up tomorrow, no sense in getting up and waking up my roommate for a glass of water.
Wake up the next morning, look down and see my roommate left his computer right below the bedside table and the water in the glass fell pretty much right onto it. He was pretty pissed.... It didn't start up...tried the whole rice in the bag trick--didn't work. So, I told him, if we can find someplace down here to fix it, I'd throw in a little cash to help fix it. Bought him dinner to appease the situation--didn't want to live in an apartment with some dude constantly pissed off at me. After that, I pretty much forgot about it and went on my way.
Now, 5 months later, he sends me a message on FB, telling me he wasn't able to get it fixed and that he had to buy a new computer, which cost him 1300 bucks. He also asks me for some money to chip in... I'm thinking, damn, first of all I forgot this shit ever happened. Second, at this point I don't feel obligated at all to throw in dough for something like this. I feel like he's just trying to randomly get some spending money outta me for something parents paid for, for something that was mostly his fault (leaving his expensive computer right below a glass of water). And now, he's got a brand new computer, when the other one was pushing 5 yrs old.
I dunno, this kid is kind of a dick. We were decent buddies for most of the study abroad but then near the end he started douching it, being dramatic in our apartment, hating on my other roommate behind his back and whatnot. Then I saw him on campus a little while back and he acted all cold to me...sorta like yeah fuck you dude.
One thing I know is that I definitely don't want to pay anything. Maybe if we were friends, I wouldn't mind throwing in a bit. The thing I'm a little grey about is if I should throw him money. My thought is that it was a damn long time ago, it was mostly his fault, and this is for something his parents paid for, and he'd only use the money to go buy booze with his friends.
At this point, I'm thinking I'll write him a little message basically telling him to fuck off...What do you guys think about this whole situation? Stupid money bullshit, I know, but wouldn't mind hearing your opinions.

this reminds of me of the time two of my friends got in a fight when one friend had an ipod on a table and the other accidentally knocked his drink over and broke the guys ipod. he didn't wanna pay because "you shouldnt have your ipod sitting on a table next to a drink". We were coming up on shrooms and started to have this huge philosophical discussion about who is at fault in a situation where someone fucks something up that shouldnt have been sitting there in the first place.
I say if you broke the thing you should pay for it

Gonna have to agree. You should throw him some cash. However, $1300 is pretty steep for a laptop. His choice to spend so darn much. You can get a great laptop for less than $800.

Yeah, you guys are probably right. I think I was just trying to justify blowing him off because I don't really care much for the kid. I'll throw him a bit. The computer cost him 1200, then he did this file transfer thing, which cost him 100. I'll cover the file transfer...think that's fair enough

He did leave the laptop in a vulnerable position, but you broke it. If someone else was responsible for breaking my laptop, they'd be replacing it. You're very lucky he has been so easy going about it until now.

Yeah, I don't feel as if it was completely I who broke it though. Verging on 50/50--he being responsible for leaving it in a poor place, I for hitting the cup of water. But still, it's his computer, and because he is the owner, he holds the responsibility for its well being.
Picture this: What if he were to say leave his computer directly in front of a door...I walk in, do not see it, and step on it, breaking it beyond repair. Can I really be blamed , despite the fact that it was I who technically caused the damage? When he set his computer up perfectly for destruction?
My situation is obviously less severe than that scenario( though not too far from it), and I've realized I should throw him a little something. But, in no way do I feel I would ever have to replace shit.

Yeah, I've been thinking that too. He posted an update on FB about 1.5 months ago saying that he was at an apple store trying to get it fixed. I'm guessing he would have bought the new one right around that time?
I dunno, he just got a new dog, so I'm guessing he's a little strapped for cash... which is what made me weary of giving him anything at all. I feel as is he's simply trying to get spending cash out of me for something his rents bought him, which he just remembered and realized I'd be an easy person to get it from. Not to mention the fact that he was an asshole to me the last time I saw him. Still though, I know I owe him something. Think I'll go with 150. Thanks the replies dudes

As for whose fault it was, I'm a little vague on the details. Was the laptop on the floor, or on a lower shelf than the glass of water? I think the fault is shared 50/50ish. I'd give him at least a couple hundred...

I was about to post the exact same thing, this is fair and the right thing to do. You broke it, you should atleast cover the cost of what it would be to replace the same make and model.

Get him the exact model that he had
Or pay him what he paid for it at the time that he purchased it.
Also, fuck anyone breaking *my* shit and then telling me how much they're going to pay me back. You pay back what's due, and you don't decide that.
edit: I may have become a little carried away with talk of violence. More than anything I'd advise you to pay this guy what he feels he's due, lest he feel the need to become violent as a result.
Forget what I'd do or how I think; consider just for a moment what this individual may be capable of and his relative level of justified sentiment in engaging in violence due to this destruction of his property and subsequent shrugging it off as if you can abuse him with impunity.

From what I just read, you're not thinking too clearly tonight, to put it nicely.
When you set your self up by being irresponsible with your own belongings, and an accident happens, there's no way you can expect full compensation for what occurs, especially to the original price of a 5yr old computer.
In retrospect, I feel a bit slimy for not wanting to give him shit.
But when...

.You know your roommate will come in later that night, and not turn on the lights so that you won't wake up, preventing him from even knowing your computer is there, and that he'll come in close proximity to the table on his way to bed

It's funny you ask, because this is where this little shindig gets even more complicated. I put the glass there, but HE, my friends, filled it with water.
Night stand: hardwoood, approximately 2.5ft tall, 2 x2 ft wide, fake marble top--off white coloration
Carpet: No carpet, dark hardwood.
Skinny Jeans: Yes, three different pairs as far as I can recall
I will be awaiting your final verdict

1. Cough up some cash. Ask him how much he expects from you, then decide if you think that's a fair amount. If it isn't, offer him less. If it is, then give him the cash and both of you walk away happily.
2. Next time when this happen, be involved in the repair process. If you break something, tell the owner that you'll get it fixed. Fix/replace the item yourself, or take it to a repair shop/whatever together with the owner. That way, you're sure you won't get fucked.
That's a valuable lesson you learned there. Don't fuck up next time!

I like Alan Rockafellars idea, with one change;
A) find the fair-market value of the exact model you ruined on e-bay
B) give him half of that amount, since you are both equally responsable

You spilled the water, thus you owe half the responsibility for what the computer was worth, if the 5 year computer was worth $150 at the time, you owe $75.
It is up to him to decide how much he wants to spend on his new computer, that has nothing to do with you. You owe half of the value of a 5 year computer, it might be only $25, figure it out and pay him.

I don't even think the floor next to the bed is a totally unreasonable place to put the laptop. Pay him back half of the fair market value of the old laptop.
