1. Cough up some cash. Ask him how much he expects from you, then decide if you think that's a fair amount. If it isn't, offer him less. If it is, then give him the cash and both of you walk away happily.
2. Next time when this happen, be involved in the repair process. If you break something, tell the owner that you'll get it fixed. Fix/replace the item yourself, or take it to a repair shop/whatever together with the owner. That way, you're sure you won't get fucked.
That's a valuable lesson you learned there. Don't fuck up next time!

I like Alan Rockafellars idea, with one change;
A) find the fair-market value of the exact model you ruined on e-bay
B) give him half of that amount, since you are both equally responsable

You spilled the water, thus you owe half the responsibility for what the computer was worth, if the 5 year computer was worth $150 at the time, you owe $75.
It is up to him to decide how much he wants to spend on his new computer, that has nothing to do with you. You owe half of the value of a 5 year computer, it might be only $25, figure it out and pay him.

I don't even think the floor next to the bed is a totally unreasonable place to put the laptop. Pay him back half of the fair market value of the old laptop.
