West coast ID's
    #15795196 - 02/11/12 09:16 PM (3 months, 15 days ago)

Thought I would post my finds that I made today.

Only seen one of these today peeking out from some leaves.

Baby oyster?

Fat guy sitting all by himself under a shady canopy on pine and leafed forest floor.

If anybody feels like throwing out some id's feel free

First one Looks like a Hygrocybe sp to me
Second one looks like a Marasmiellus nigripes or something similar
Not sure about the little cap...a bit like an aminita but

But only some guesses

It's been fairly mild lately... nice to see things popping up so early.

Possibly, but I think even at that stage it would exhibit some peeling on the cap.

Yet another instance in which 2 seconds on M.O. would help me make a more educated reply :facepalm3:

Not really. I always find them like that, and relish them in that state. No bugs yet !

To be sure of ID, you can slice it open and see if it stains orange-red

Yep, my bad. It was an under-educated post.

Your statement is not exactly correct.

Some Chlorophyllum stain red-orange.
Sometimes ones like Chlorophyllum molybdites do not stain at all.

Red-orange, saffron, pinkish red, red, red brown, etc.  You can not separate Chlorophyllum species on the staining color alone.  Period.

I'm not sure if you're saying that molybdites doesn't stain or that sometimes it doesn't.  But it does stain some form of red/orange/saffron/redbrown/etc.
