Winter growing mushrooms in PNW
    #15793036 - 02/11/12 01:43 PM (3 months, 16 days ago)

New to Shroomery, so this may have been covered before, but I've sifted through a good amount of threads and haven't found anything directly addressing the subject.

Is there any strains of hallucinogenic mushrooms that grow in the Portland area during the winter months surrounding February?

No. That is why you haven't found anything, because actives don't really grow in the winter months. You might get lucky, but it's a very slim chance to find anything active right now.

Gotcha. Is it the temperature fluctuations that keep them dormant in the winter? Seems to be plenty of precipitation

Welcome to Shroomery!  PNW is a great place to mushroom hunt...

Probably mushrooming for dumbies... Or perhaps by a dumbie...

Many mushrooms are seasonal, meaning the appear in spring, summer or fall. Just going to talk generalities here... Always those fellow who violate all rules!

When they appear during their season is a good question, but probably as some to do with temperature and moisture but is probably a bit more complicated than just that.  Why they are seasonal is a good question, probably involving genetics, niche, substrate preparation(food), plants,  ect. We see that effects from months prior, rain and temps can affect the mushroom seasons, in part at least, making good hunting (2010) vice bad hunting (2011). Am sure it's even more complicated then that really...

Keep in mind that the part we see, the mushroom, is sort of like the fruit of a plant (yes, I know fungi are a separate kingdom, just trying to make a point). Most of the fungi itself, is growing and living, you just can't see it.
So, just like you will not find apples ripening in the spring, you are not likely to find mushrooms fruiting out of their season.

Sorry but maybe I am mistaken, don't cyan's and azures grow in the winter? At least in NorCal they do. Usually it starts in December when the first rains come. Look for them on patches of wood chips.

Nocal is not the PNW

Cyans start in PNW about Oct 4... Are done by Dec 21

Cyans are still being found in Oregon  and possibly Washington.  Mushrooms don't have calenders.

Pretty sure mynard found those late last fall and is just posting the pictures now, but I am just going by what he wrote... Maybe I miss understood????  The OP was for Portland....

I beg to differ, mushrooms have growing cycles... and yes, they do follow calendars though there will always be some outsiders...  I know some folks have found a cyan in the spring, but hunting for them in the spring will lead to disappointment in the PNW.

But what do I know?

That's nettypatches, not maynard.

No need to be upset.  I agree there are seasons.  There are also odd seasons where you can still find a cyan in February.

Seriously, "what do I know?"....are you that upset?
